Honoring
Dr. Kazuo Inamori The Japan America Society of Southern California is
proud to present its Kokusai Shimin Sho
“International Citizens Award” to Dr. Kazuo Inamori,
at the 102nd Anniversary Dinner
3
Dr. Kazuo Inamori was born in Kagoshima, Japan in 1932.
He graduated from Kagoshima University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree and joined Shofu Industries, an insulator manufacturing company, in Kyoto. In April 1959, he established Kyoto Ceramic Co., Ltd. (now Kyocera Corporation) with an investment of 3 million Japanese yen from acquaintances. He served as president and chairman of the company until 1997, when he assumed the title of founder and chairman emeritus.
When Japan's telecommunications industry was deregulated in 1984, Dr. Inamori quickly took the initiative to establish DDI Corporation, and became its chairman. In October 2000, DDI merged with KDD and IDO to create KDDI Corporation, and he served as KDDI's chairman emeritus. He was named honorary adviser in June 2001. In February 2010, the Government of Japan tapped Dr. Inamori to become chairman of Japan Airlines.
In 1984, Dr. Inamori made a personal endowment to establish the non-profit Inamori Foundation, and became its president. At the same time, he created the Kyoto Prize, an international award presented by the Inamori Foundation each November to recognize individuals and groups worldwide who have made outstanding contributions to the betterment of the global community and humankind.
His volunteer service includes leading Seiwajyuku, a private management school operating in 62 locations, 9 of which are outside of Japan. As president of Seiwajyuku, Dr. Inamori teaches his management philosophy to more than 6,200 business owners and entrepreneurs worldwide.
He also holds several posts outside of the company including honorary chairman of the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce and Industry, foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, trustee emeritus of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, foreign associate of the National Academy of Engineering in the United States, and special adviser to the Cabinet.
In 1997, he entered Buddhist priesthood; ceremony at Enpuku-ji temple of the Rinzai sect, Myoshinji-lineage, Kyoto.
The JASSC 2011 Japan Relief Fund was created by the Japan America Society of Southern California within hours of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the Sanriku coast in the Tohoku region of Japan on Friday, March 11, 2011. Donations to the JASSC 2011 Japan Relief Fund will be forwarded to disaster relief agencies in Japan that have a proven track record of both immediate emergency humanitarian relief and long–term recovery and redevelopment of destroyed areas.
We extend our deep appreciation to everyone and every organization that has made a contribution to the JASSC 2011 Japan Relief Fund, especially our Charter Donors, including:
Kennedy Wilson — $50,000 Donation Kennedy Wilson is a real estate operating company that provides a diversified array of real estate investments and services. Founded in 1977, the company is headquartered in Beverly Hills with 22 offices throughout the United States and Japan.
Bank of the West — $50,000 Donation Based in San Francisco, $58 billion-asset Bank of the West offers a full range of business, corporate, personal, trust and international banking services and operates more than 700 branch locations and commercial banking offices in 19 Western and Midwestern states.
Sunkist Growers, Inc. — Donation of matching funds up to $200,000 Sunkist is a leading international citrus supplier of fresh fruit. Headquartered in Thousand Oaks, the company is the oldest continually operating citrus cooperative in America and the largest marketing cooperative in the world's fruit and vegetable industry.
QuinStar Technology, Inc. — $33,000 Donation Founded in 1993 and based in Torrance, QuinStar Technology is dedicated to the development, manufacture and marketing of millimeter-wave products serving established and emerging markets for commercial, scientific and defense arenas worldwide.

The Japan America Society of Southern California has a strong history
of providing disaster relief assistance to Japan, including:
1923 Great Kanto Earthquake in Tokyo – The Society led relief efforts to
gather monetary donations, food and clothing.
1959 Typhoon Vera (Isewan) – After Nagoya was devastated by the
strongest typhoon to hit Japan in recorded history, the Society cancelled its
planned 50th Anniversary Celebration and coordinated efforts with the
JCCSC to raise funds and send clothing and blankets. The Red Cross later
wrote, “The amount raised by Americans in greater L.A. totals $42,588, the
largest amount of disaster relief funds contributed by a single geographical
section of the U.S. to the Japanese people since the 1923 earthquake.”
1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake – Within 12 hours the Society established
the “Kobe Relief Fund” and worked with Japanese, Japanese American and
other non-profit organizations to receive approximately 10,000 individual
contributions totaling $1.7 million, recognized by then-Prime Minister
Tomiichi Murayama as the largest amount Kobe received from a grassroots
relief campaign.

Suggested Retail Value
All suggested market or retail values are based on the following:
Donors: Donor estimates of the market values are used as the fair
market values indicated on any auction item listing. If market values
were not provided, an independent auction committee researched
market values using the internet and utilized comparable or closest
comparable values. JAS does not determine any specific market
values.
American Airlines: Peak round-trip rates during premium travel
season and participating cities are used for the 48 contiguous United
States, Hawaii, Canada, Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, South
America, Europe, Pacific (Asia, Australia, South Pacific Islands).
Other Airlines: Tariff rates are utilized. One-way fares are utilized if
two different cities are featured on the departing and returning
flights.
Hotels and Tours: Hotel’s published “Rack Rate” plus all applicable
sales tax.
Packages: Each component of a package is priced separately to
determine the total suggested retail value.
All rates are based on the high season that the gift certificate is
eligible for redemption.
Ground Transportation: Unless specifically stated otherwise, no
ground transportation is included in any package. The winning
bidders are required to secure and pay for ground transportation
from airports to hotels, airports to cruise ships, hotels to include
attractions or tours, etc.

How to Participate in the Silent Auction
A Bid Sheet is displayed with each auction item or package and
includes the item or package title, estimated value, minimum opening
bid amount and bid increment.
To bid on a package, simply write your Name and Table Number -
Guest Number (i.e. your Bidder Number) for the dollar amount you
wish to bid on the appropriate Bid Sheet. You may bid as many times
as you wish.
Each Bid Sheet lists a Bid Increment which is the minimum value by
which the existing bid must be increased in order to constitute a
higher value bid. All bids must be in even dollar amounts.
All bid information must be in keeping with the guidelines above in
order to be considered a valid bid.
Guests may not remove bid sheets from the auction table.
Notice will be given for the closing of the silent auction. After the
auction is closed, Bid Sheets will be collected by auction volunteers
who will verify the validity of all winning bids.
Due to the number of items auctioned and the limited number of
volunteers, the highest bid on the bid sheet, at the time the auction
volunteer collects the bid sheet will be declared the winner.
Your cooperation and understanding with these auction rules is very
much appreciated.
11
Payment & Pick Up
Any applicable taxes, licensing fees or other consumer-related
charges on any item are the sole responsibility of the winning bidder.
Silent Auction winners will be notified of their winning bids during
the dinner program.
Japan America Society auction volunteers will come to your table to
collect payment for winning item(s). Acceptable methods of payment
are cash, check, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express
or JCB). All accounts must be paid in full prior to the release of
item(s).
Auction volunteers will then return to your table with your winning
item and a receipt. For items that cannot be delivered to your table,
please use the receipt to redeem winning item(s) by the end of the
dinner program.
Thank you very much for your support of the Japan America Society of Southern California!
