THEETHERSHIPMYSTERYANDITSSOLUTIONITheseriesofaerialphenomenawhichareheredescribedunderthetermetherships(FlyingSaucers)firstattractedpublicattentioninthefallof1946.Itwasbynomeansthefirstappearanceofthesecraftintheskiesofourplanet,butveryfewpersonswereawareofthisfact,andthepublicasawholeatfirstrefusedtocreditthereportsatall.Thenewspapers,theradio,andmanypsychologistsandscientificworkersjoinedindiscreditingtheallegedfacts,andinattributingthemtodelusionordeliberatefalsifying.Neverthelesstheevidencecontinuedtoaccumulate,withmostcircumstantialanddetailedreportsfromcompetentobservers,untilfinallyasystemicinvestigationwasundertakenbytheUnitedStatesAirForce.Theoutcomeofthiswasindeedcurious,sinceaftersometwoyearsofstudyofthephenomena,theAirForcehasrecentlyannouncedofficiallythatthereisnogenuineandfactualbasisforthereports.Theexplanationforthiswilldoubtlessbecomeclearatsomefuturetime.Thepublic,however,showsnosignofacceptingthisremarkablepronouncement.Newreportsofthestrangeskyvisitorsappearalmostdaily,andtheirexistenceisdefinitelyestablished.Thepurposeofthesepages,therefore,isnottoarguethecasefortheexistenceoftheDiscsorSaucers(sincedatawouldruntosomehundredsofpages),butrathertopresentassimplyaspossiblethetruenatureandmeaningofthephenomena.Itseemstousimportant,andinthenatureofapublicduty,thatthisbedone.Thereisalreadyapprehensioninthemindsofmany,andif(asweexpect)manymorestrikingcraftareattributedtosomeforeignandunfriendlygovernment,hostilityandfearmightdevelop;andiftheyarebelievedtocomefromsomeotherplanetofoursolarsystem,unreasoningandsuperstitiousfearistobereckonedwith,perhapswithaconsiderabledegreeofsocialdisintegration.Thislatterhypothesis,infact,isalreadybeingadvancedinallseriousnessthoughfornobetterreasonthanthatnootheroriginseemsconceivableYetthereisanotherpossiblesource(andweareconvincedthetruesource)forthesestrangecraft,andthetimehascomewhenthisexplanationmustbemadeavailabletoeveryone,inthesimplesttermspossible.Unfortunately,noteveryonewillfindtheexplanationeasilyunderstandable.Itcannotbedisposedofbyawordofoneortwosyllablesonly,suchasMars,Venus,orevenRussia,butrequiresalittlesustainedattentionandmentaleffort.Ontheotherhand,theinterestofmostofourreaderswillnotbeinthephysicsandthespeculativescienceinvolved,butinafeweminentlypracticalquestions,suchas:1. Aretheyfriendly,oraretheydangerous?Ananswertothesequestions,ifitcanbegiven,willprobablysatisfytheactivecuriosityofmostreaders.Tothoseofamorereflectivemind,andtothescientist,philosopherandnondogmaticreligionist,suchanswers,baldlyput,willbeonlyashadowybeginningorperhapstoofantastictoreckonwithatall.Butforourpresentpurposesweshallneglectthesetoughmindedandcriticalfolk,andanswerourownquestionsinamorecategoricalway.WHATARETHEFLYINGDISCS?Firstletussaywhattheyarenot.Theyarenotdelusions,fantasy,orlies.Theyarenotconstructedbyanyforeigngovernment,orbyourown.Theydonotcomefromthedepthsoftheseathoughsomeofthemmayentertheseaattimes.TheydonotcomefromthePolarregions,orfromTibetorJavathoughitisconceivablethatsometemporarybaseonourearthmaybeutilized.TheyarenotconstructionsoftheAtlanteansorotherancientpeoples,preservedincavernsagainstthecomingdayofneed.Wementionsthesehypothesesbecausetheyhaveallbeenseriouslyadvanced.Ourcategoricaldenialshouldreallybereadthisway:Wehavenoevidencethatanyoftheseexplanationsiscorrect,andnoneofthemcoincidewithwhatwebelievetobethecorrectfacts.Butweofferthefirstwordandnotthelastinthismatter.Newdatamayappearatanytime.Tothesedenialsetusadd,theethericcraft,theDiscs,donotcomefromanyotherplanet(visibleastronomicalbodyonly)ofoursolarsystem,orfromanyotherheavenlybodyknowntous.Sofarasapopularexplanationexists,thisplanetaryoneismostinfavor.Thereasonisobviousandthereasoninggoesthisway:TheDiscsarenotmadeonthisearthyettheyarerealandnotillusionarythereforetheymustbemadeonsomeotherplanet,presumablyMarsorVenus,sincethesearethenearest.Thisreasoning,however,suffersfromwhatlogicianscallanomittedmiddle,orathirdsomewhat,analternativewhichisoverlooked.Canyoubuildabettermousetrap?asksamagazinewriterrecently,clearlydistrustinghisownplanetarytheoryyetunabletothinkofanythingelse.Wereplypromptly,wecertainlycan.Thesimplestdescriptionofthismousetrapisourpresentobjective,andifyourpatiencepermitsweshalltrytomakethewholeconceptreasonablyclearthoughnotnecessarilyacceptabletoyourpersonalthinking,ofcourse.WhataretheDiscsandwheredotheycomefrom?Weshallhavetocombinethequestionsandanswers.TheycomefromtheregionofexistencecalledtheEthericPlance,orEthericlevelandbyuswiththenameEtheria.Whooperatesthem?TheEthericPeople,theEtherians.Aretheyfriendly,orhostile,ordangerous?Neitherfriendlynorhostileonthewhole,butmainlyindifferenttowardsus.Buttheyarenotindifferentifweattackthem,orpursueandannoythem,ormakethemuncomfortable(apparently)byouratombombs,thereleaseofatomicornuclearenergies.

Furtheronthispoint:Itishighlylikely,notprovable,thatourAirForcehasalreadylostmorethanoneshipthroughtheirattemptedinterferencewiththeseethericcraft.Itisbelievedandisprobablethattheyaresurroundedbyapowerfulmagneticfield,orsomeforcecorrespondingtoit,whicheasilydisintegratesourownaircraft.Itislikelythatthereleaseofatomicenergiesisfeltontheethericlevelswithsomediscomfiture.Itispossible,thoughwhollyconjectural,thattheymightintervenetopreventaworldwarwithatomicweapons,andespeciallywithsuchaweaponastheproposedhydrogenbomb.Butthen,whydotheycomeintoourskiesatall?Tworeasonscanbesuggested,ortwoaspectsofthesamereason.Theseethericcrafthaveappearedatintervalsthroughouthistory,sometimeswithoutadefinitecorrelationwithearthevents,butalways(itissaid)whenacivilizationorculturehadreacheditspeakandwasenteringuponaperiodofdeclineandfall.Theirpurposewassimplytoobserveandstudytheconditionsandstateofhumanity,fortheirowninformationandtheirhistoricalarchives.Theyhavealsoappearedpriortoterrestrialconvulsions,suchasvolcaniceruptionsandearthquakes.Inthepresentinstance,itislikelythatbothreasonsexist.Thesocialandpoliticalstateoftheworldisindeedperilous.OurweaponshavebecomeamenacetotheEtheriansthemselves,anditissaidthatseismicdisturbancesareimpending.OverthePacificslope,forexample,theflightofEthershipshasfollowedthemagneticmeridians,northandsouth.ItissaidthattheEtheriansaredoingthisinordertoobservetheformationoftheethericvortexeswhichpresageanearthquake;theyarechartingthisarea,andalsothewholeoftheearthssurface,forthesamegeneralpurposeofscientificstudy.Now,whateveryouthinkoftheideasandexplanationshereadvanced,rememberthatthereisnothingvagueanduncertainaboutthepresenceofthesestrangecraft,orabouttheirremarkablespeedandpowerandcompletesuperiorityintheair.Thisisanintenselypracticalmatterandhowfarreachingitmaybe,noonecansay.Thimeansthatourpersonalattitudeisalsoamatterofpracticalconcern.LetusrememberthattheEtheriansarenotilldisposedtowardus,thatweshouldNOTfearthem,shouldneverattackthem.Furtherphenomenaarealmostcertaintooccurandmaybeofthemostremarkablekind.Panicandsuperstitiousfearmayseizeuponthemasses.Itmayhappenthataconsiderablemeasureofresponsibilitywillfalluponthoseuswhohavesomemeasureofunderstandingofwhatistakingplace.HeretoforetheEtherianshavewithdrawnquietlywhentheirmissionwascompleted;menthoughtofthemasGodsorAngels,orspiritsoftheairordemons,embodiedtheminfolkloreandmythology,andforgotthemlittlebylittle.Soitmaybe,thistime.Theymaywithdrawfromourskies,andinafewmonthsmenwillhavealmostforgottenthem.Buttherearereasonswhichcannotbeelaboratedhere,forbelievingeventsmaytakeanotherandmorestrikingcourse.Neitheryourwillnorminecanstaytheseevents,butfear,fanaticismandpanicmayworkincalculablewoe.Paniciscontagious,itengulfsonelikeanenormouswave,andatthemomentwefancyourselvescool,calmandsuperiorofmind,aredraggedunderbyit.Nootherconsiderationswouldleadustowritethesepages,whichwillforthemostpartbereadwithderisionorbewhollydisregarded.

WHEREISETHERIA?Onematterofimmediatepracticalinterest,theinevitablequestion!WhereisEtheria?(Ifyouthinkwhereisaneasyquestion,goputittothephilosophers!)Butsomeanswermustbemade,sohereisareplyinafewlines,tobeelaboratedperhapsonsubsequentpages.Etheriaishereifweknowwhatheremeans!Alongside,inside,outsideofourworld.Becauseourworld,thatis,thesocalleddensematteroftheobjectsinourworld,isararefication.Itisspacedoutlikeavstnetanetwithenormousmeshes.Imagine,ifyouwill,anetofwirewithmeshesamilewide.Wouldnotwindandwaterflowthroughthatnetasifitdidnotexist?Alittlefriction,very,verylittle!Onthestrandsofthosemesheswelive.Thatisthesocalleddensematterofourworld.Welookoutacrossthemeshanddonotseeanythinginit,orhearorfeelanythinginit,andsocallitemptyspace.Meaninglesswordsintheabyssesoffolly!Wesee,hear,feeltheotherstrandsofthemesh,andcallourworldsolid,firmandmaterial!Callitarealandsubstantialthing!Butthespacesofthemeshareathousandandtenthousandtimesgreaterthanthesubstanceofthestrands.Whatisinthesespacesofthemeshofourmatter?Space?Spaceisnotnothing.Spaceisstuff,ismatter.Whatkindofmatter?Thematterwhichmakestheethers.Moredensenotless,butmoredensebyfarthantherarefactionsofourworld.ThematteroftheEthericworld!Insidethemolecules,insidetheatoms,otheratomsstillotheratomsinsideofthose,ortenthousandChineseeggseachinsideofanother.Ifyouthinkthatthisisimagination,orthatthereisnoroomfortheseinterpenetratinguniversesaskthephysicistandthemathematician.Theywilltellyouthereisnothingintheomniversebutroom;androom,again,isspace,isstuff,isbasicworldstuff,mindstuff,lifestuff;andthereisnoemptinessanywhereAndthatiswhyEtheriaishere!Butitisalsoeverywhere.Allheavenlybodieshaveanethericrealm.Afewlinesmoreandweshallhavedonewiththemorepracticalandpressingaspectsofoursubject.Theethericships,aseveryoneknows,areofmanytypes,notallofthemDiscsbyanymeans.Somearelongandcigarshaped;manyareshapedlikeballoonsordirigibles;somehavewingsorwinglikeattachments.Manyofthemappeartochangeshapewhileintheair.Theircolorvariesalsoandhasalsobeenseentochange.Someofthemresemblefireballs;othersareaccompaniedorfollowedbysmoke,vapor,andluminousappearances.Somearetranslucent,orseemtoglowfromwithin.Theytravelatallspeeds,fromzero(stationary)tothousandsofmilesandhour.Theyalsovarywidelyinsize,fromafewfeetoryardsindiametertonearlyincredibledimensions;wehavereportsconsideredtrustworthyofatleastonecrafttenmilesinlength.Theyhaveacuriouswayofdisappearingsuddenlywheninplainsight,andalsoofrapidlydwindlinginsizewithoutwithdrawingindistance.Itiswelltobearalltheseitemsinmind,sinceanysingleexplanationmustobviouslycoverallofthem;itisnotenoughtoinventsometheoryforthediscshapesaloneandthenimaginewhatthatthewholematterisaccountedfor.Now,undertheethericexplanationwhichwearepresentinghere,ourunderstandingisbrieflythis:ETHERICEXPLANATIONOFFLYINGSAUCERSAllofthetypesofcraftjustmentionedcomefromthesamesource.AllareconstructedbyEtherians.Theirvarietyarisesfromthefactthatmanyofthemareexperimental,andthatdifferenttypesofthemservedifferenttechnicalpurposes.Thesecraftarebuiltinmatteroftheetheric

planeandareimperceptibletous,sincetheyexistinwhatwecallemptyspace.Theyenterourplaneorourlevelofperceptionbyaprocessofmaterialization.Theextremelydensematterwhichfillsinthepatternofethericstressesisreplacedbymatterofthekindthatisvisibletousorbetter,itsvibrationrateislowereduntilitbecomesvisible.Alittlelikeslowingdownaveryfastfanuntilonecanseeitsblades.Thisiscloselysimilartowhathappensinthephenomenonorapportation(whereobjects,ofanykindorsize,aremiraculouslytransportedintoandoutofsealedrooms,sealedcontainersandthelike).Manypeople,andmostscientists,takenostockinthisallegedphenomenon,butitiswellattestedandcannotbesurrenderedonthataccount.Neitherthepatternnorthemolecularfillingisdestroyed;theobjectbecomesinvisiblebecausetheatomicmotionisspeedup,anditcanpassthroughothermatter(awall,e.g.)becauseofthissamefact.Thisisequivalenttoanincreaseindensitywhenanobjectonourplaceisbeingapportedfromoneplacetoanother.ToanEtherian,anobjectmaterializingonourplanewoulddematerializeonhis;tousitmaterializesinourfieldofperception,anddematerializeswhenitreturnstoitsethericstate.Ifweunderstandthis,weareonthewaytowardaccountingformanyodditemsofbehavior,suchashavebeenmentionedabove.Itisprobablywellknownbythistime,thatseveraloftheseethershipshavefallen,andtheircontentscarefullystudiedalthoughwithutmostsecrecy.Wecannotenterhereuponthispartof,whichhasbeenprintedinotherBSRApublications;wewishtoreferonlytothelittlepeople,dwarfsabout30inchesinheight,whosebodieswerefoundwithintheDiscs.WehavereasontobelievethattheEtherians,whomustoperateontheirbodiesjustastheydoontheethericsubstanceofthediscinordertoaccompanythemchoosetomaterializeinsmallforms,simplyfortheconvenienceofoperationandflight.This,likeeverythingelsesetforthhere,isaccordingtoourbestknowledgeandbeliefatthiswriting.Werepeat,thatweareofferingthefirstwordsandnotthelastonthisextraordinaryproblem.Thepropulsionoftheetheriancraftisbeyondthepresentconceptsofourscienceyetwehaveagoodcluetoitsnature,andshallcommentonitonalaterpage.(Thereisnomotor,propellerorothermechanisminsidethefallendiscs,sofaraswehavebeenabletolearn.)Wemustaddtheextraordinaryfact,thatundercertainconditions,oratcertainstatesofmaterialization,oratcertainaltitudesandpressures,thesubstanceoftheethershipsisjellylikeandactuallydoeschangeinshapeandapparentsize.(Theouterskinofthefallendiscs,however,isharderthansteel,andofunidentifiedsubstance.)Itisourinformationthatcertaintypesoftheethershipsareandhavelongbeenusedforinterplanetarytravel.Thosewhopersistinthebeliefthattheycomefromvisibleplanetsofoursystem,willeventuallyseizeuponthisasaconfirmatoryfact.ButtheethershipsdoNOToriginateonvisibleplanets,aswehavesaid.Interplanetarytravelissimplyoneoftheirinnumerableuses,andthisfactshouldnotmisleadus.ThecraftaremadeinEtheria,andEtheriaisinandaroundallvisibleobjects.Itisalsothehomeandmotherlandofourplane,alltheobjectsweseeaboutusderivefromthatsource,andourownbodiesalso.WeourselvesareEtheriansbyancestryanddescent;forEtheriaisthehomeofthehumanrace.Thatweshouldbesogrosslyignorantofitisstrangeindeed.

SOMEWILLUNDERSTANDItisthisignorance,andthekindofunderstandableintolerancewhichmustaccompanyit,whichmakesitsodifficult,almostimpossibletoexplainthismattertomanyreaders,notexcludingtheaveragescientificworker,theprofessionalman,andthesocalledintellectualsgenerally.Theobscurantisteffectsoftheacademicandprofessionalbackgroundareinfactwellknown,excepttothoseafflictedbythem.Thereare,however,somemillionsofpeople,lessvictimizedbythehypnoticdreamsofourpseudoculture,whowillwellunderstandwhatwearetryingtosetdown.ThenextchapterinthestoryofEuropeanculturewillbethestoryoftheLightfromtheOtherSideEgonFriedellwrotethisattheendofVol.IIofhisCulturalHistoryofEurope.***Ithasbeenthepracticeofthepresentwriter,whenattemptingtolectureonthissubjects,toallowabriefintermissionatthispointbeforeenteringonevenmorefantasticexcursions.Atthistimethemoreoutragedhearerswerefreetowithdraw,noisysleeperscouldbeadmonished,andiftheentireaudienceoftenasmanyastwentypeoplechosetodepartenmasse,arefundofonethirdtheadmissionmoneywasusuallysufficienttoinsureapeacefulexit.Theadvantagesofthisplanweresogreatthatithasherebeenimportedintowrittencompositionalso,theintermissiontakingplaceatthebeginningofSectionII.***IIHavingnowdisposedofthemoreurgentissuesofthissubjectandfollowingtheintermission,itseemsbesttoreferagaintothesubjectofthisCloudCuckooLandofEtheria,andthepossibility,probability,eventhenecessityforitsexistence.Werefertoitunderthismythologicaltitlebecausemostpeople,thoughtheybelieveinheavenonSundaysandinhellwhenmisfortunepursuesthem,arequiteunabletobelievethatEtheria,beinginvisible,unheardanduntouchable,hasanyrealityaboutitatall.Wedonotblamethemparticularly,atleastnotasmuchaswedosomeofourspeculativephysicistswhoarealreadyuptotheirnecksinOrientalmetaphysics,andhenceshouldbereasonablyopenminded.Yetitmaybepossibletoinvesttheideawithacertainsweetreasonablenessforatime,eventhoughourindomitablecommon(non)senserejectsitsoonafterward.Iftherearecolorswecannotsee,soundwecannothear,anddenseandsolidbodieswhichwecannotdiscoverbytouch,itiscertainlynottoodifficulttoconceiveofaworldwhichthoughpossessingsounds,colorsandmaterialobjects,isyetimperceptibletous.Itwouldbeasunknowntous,bydirectperception,asamanistoanant,orabirdtoabeetle.Andifanyorbeetle,orafishinitselementcouldbequestionedandcouldmakeareply,theywouldprobablybedeeplyskepticalabouttheexistenceofmenandbirdsunseenandunseeableentitiesallegedtobelivingrightalongsideoftheminthesameworld.Thisis,obviouslyamatterofwhatiscalledplanesofconsciousnessorawareness,andnotreallyinthesameworldatall.Theantworldisthenestorhill;thefishworldisalimitedareaofsea;andthoughithappensthatmancanpeerinonbothof

them,theyhavenowayofdiscoveringhim.Atthispointthefruitfulprinciplesofanalogysuggest,thatpossiblythereareinvisiblebeingswhocanpeerinonmanalso.Hemaybethecruxofcreation(orcrossofafflictionofit)butisnotnecessarilyitscrown.Andthoughreputedtobealittlelowerthantheangles,thisearthmanifestationofhimatleastmaybebutlittlehigherthanacaterpillar,intheeyesofunknownbutobservableIntelligences.Thissomewhatdespitefulguess,however,isalittlebytheway;weintendedtoreturntoourhighschoolphysics(Makemeachildagainjustfortonight.)withreferencetoourperceptionofsoundandcolor.Ofcourse,ifyoudefinesoundassensation,asaudibility,thenbydefinitiontherearenosoundsyoucannothear.Ifyoudefinecolorasseeing,asvisualperception,thenbydefinitiontherearenocolorsyoucannotsee.Butthephysicistknowsthatcolorsaredistinguishedfromeachotherbytheirwavelengths,andthelengthofthewaveshasbeenmeasured.Red,forexample,hasawavelengthof.00007594;whileviolet,attheotherendofthevisiblespectrum,is.00003968.Alltheothercolorscomeinbetweenwithdecreasingvalues.Butthatdoesnotmeantheseriesorscaleofcolorisexhausted;thetabulationofwavelengthsgoesrightalongbelowtheredandabovetheviolet.Itisonlyourabilitytoseethemwhichrunsoutonus.Usingthewordcolorinthisverycorrectandlogicalsense,itisplainthatanobjectmayhaveacolorwhichwecannotsee,andwillthereforebeinvisibletous.

Thesituationwithregardtosoundisofcourseanalogous.Somepeoplehearsoundswhichotherscannot;manysavagesandnearlyallanimalshaveanalmostmiraculousacuityofhearing,andtheexistenceofinaudiblesoundvibrationsisacommonplaceofscience.Awholenewscienceofultrasonicsisnowfastdeveloping.Thepointistooobvioustospendtimeupon.Therearesoundsaboutuswhichwecanthear;justastherearecolorswecantsee.Theremaybe,then,accordingtocommonsenseandcommonscience,aworldofsoundandofcolor,andevenofcoloredobjectsallaboutus,yetwhollyunperceivedbyus.Allthis,aswepromisedyou,issweetlyreasonable.Butnowwecometothesticker.Everyoneknows,yousay,thattherearewaves,frequencies,vibrationsofsoundandlightwhichwecannotsensebutwhataboutthismatteroftouch,oftangibility?Wedonotseeorhearthecatontherugortheantiquerockingchairwithitshundredarmswhenwegogropingandfumblinginthedark;butwesoondiscovertheminanotherway.Soundlessandcolorlessobjectsareatleasttangible,andifthereisaworldfullofthemallaboutus,whydowenotfeelthem,makecontactwiththem,discoverthembyinstruments?Ifthereissuchaworld,yousay,itmustbevaporouslikeairorgas,oremanations,radiationsorrays.Theobjectionisnatural,legitimateandanswerable;buttobegin,wemustmakethedifficultyseemworsebyaffirmingthatthisunseeableandunhearableworldiscomposedofmatterwhich,farfrombeinglikevapororgas,isathousandtimesmoredense,moresolid,realandmaterialthantheobjectsofourownplane.Thereissuchathingsasmatter,substancestuffwhichistoodensetotouch.Weweretalking,afewlinesback,aboutthespectrumofcolorandsound.Wemustnowconsiderthatbyanalogyatleastthereshouldbeaspectrumoftouchoroftangibility,also.Therereallyissuchaspectrum,andtheupperlimitofitisfamiliartoeveryone.Whensolidmatterisvaporizedwecannottouchitorusuallyseeit;norcanwefellthepresenceofmostrays,radiationsandemanations.Thedifficulty,then,isaboutthelowerendofthisspectrum.Weareaccustomedtothinkingofverydensematter,suchasastoneorbrickorlead,asbeingrealandtangible,andoffluffy,light,floatingthingsasapproachinganintangiblecondition;yethereweareaffirmingthatstuffwhichisfarmoredensethanleadorstonecannotbetouchedatall,justforthatveryreason.Eitherwearetalkingnonsenseorourhabitualcommonsenseviewoftheworldisverynave.Togetstraightenedoutonthisweshallhavetoaskourselvesafewquestions.COMPRESSEDTOINVISIBILITYLetussupposewehavebeforeustwosmallcubes,oneofcorkandtheotherofleadandeachthesamesize,oninchineachdirection.Theleadcubeweighsmore(thepullorpushofgravityonitisgreaterthanonthecork),andhasmoremass(whichreferstothequantityofmatterinit);butithasthesameoverallvolumeastheothercube.Nowimaginethatwecanexertaverypowerfulpressureonallsidesatonce,ofthisleadcube,sothatitiscompressed.Thatmeansthattheparticlesofleadareforcedalittleclosertogether.Imaginethispressurecontinuedandincreaseduntilthecubebecomesahalfinch,aquarterinch,ora16thofaninchindimensions.Imagineitdecreasedtoapinpointsize,andthentoapointwhereitbecomesmicroscopic,invisible.Alloftheoriginalcubeisthere;allofitsmassandweight;onlythevolumehaschanged.Supposethisultramicroscopiccubeishurledagainstthecubeofcork.Willthelatterstopit?Thisenormously

heavyandextremelysmallparticlewillpassthroughtheloosestructureofthecorkasifitwerenotthereatall.Thecubicinchoflead,byvirtueofbecomingthousandsoftimesmoredensethanthecork,bytheprocessofreducingitsvolume,penetratesthelesserdensitywithease.Whatelsehashappenedinsidethecubeofleadasitwascompressed?Leavingasideallthebooksfulloffactandtheoriesabouttheatom,letusconcentrateonthesinglefactthateveryconstituentparticleoftheleadisbelievedtobeinmotion.Whenaparticlemovesithasatrackorpath;thereisdistanceinvolved,andalsospeedorrateofmovement.Supposeyouhaveapointerofsomekindwhichisswitchedbackandforthacrossadial,sayaonefoot,onewaymovementinonesecond.Cuttheonefootmotiondowntosixincheswithoutchangingspeed.Thepointerwillthencoverthesamedistanceinthesametime,butitwillpassoverasixinchspacetwice,insteadofoverthe12inchspaceonce.Itwillhaveabeatorfrequencyoftwo,asaresultofshorteningitspath.Nowwhenwecompressthecubeofleadwemayconceivethatthepathsortracksofthemotionofitsparticlesareshortenedinsomewaytheirspeedisnotchangedbuttheirfrequencyofvibrationrateisincreased.Theleadremainsleadbuttheelectronsandnucleioftheatomareatrifleclosertogether.Ifwekeptthecubeinitsoriginalsizebutpressedmoreleadintoit,theeffectwouldbethesame;thedensitywouldbeincreased,andsowouldbeitsmassandweight.Wehaveusedthewordspeed,andproperlyspeakingthismeansrateofmotioninanydirection.Speedismeasuredonascaleandhasmagnitudeonly,butvelocityhasbothmagnitudeanddirection(avectorquantity).Ifwechangeeitherspeedordirectionwegetachangeofvelocity.Thesearequestionsofcorrectmathematicalusage;butallwearetryingtodohereisalittlecrudepicturethinking,toseehowthedensityofmatterisrelatedtothespeedorvelocityorvibrationrateofitsparticles.Densityisthequantityofmatterperunitvolume.Increaseddensityandincreasedspeedoftheatomicparticlesgotogether.Massincreaseswithvelocityandwithdecreaseinsize.Ourultramicroscopicleadcubehasanenormousmass,averysmallsize,andaveryhighvelocityofitsparticles,andahighdensity.Thesecharacteristicswillmakeitpenetrative,sothatitwillgothroughthecorkoranylessdensematterlikewindthroughawiremesh.THELOWERENDOFTHESPECTRUMOFTANGIBILITYItshouldbeclearbythistime,thatifwetakeanysubstance,anyobject,andmakeitextremelydense,wedecreaseitsvolumeuntilwecannotseeitortouchit.Atacertaindensitywereachthelowerendofthespectrumoftangibilityandofseeablecolors.Wespokeonapreviouspageofthefactthatthesocalleddensematterofourworldisreallyararefaction,akindofthinningoutofsomekindofverydensestuffcalledspace,ortheethers.Butwhenwetalkaboutcompressingacubicinchofleaddowntoasizewhereitisinvisible,weseemtobeoffendingcommonsenseagain.Eveniftheleadisararefaction,youmaysay,itcanhardlybeastenuousandrarefiedasallthat.Butletislookatthisinthelightofscientificfacts.Supposeanatomtobesoenormouslyenlarged,withallofthedistanceskeptinproportion,sothattheorbitoftheelectron(ifithasanorbit)hasadiameterequaltothatoftheearthaboutthesun,say184millionmiles,.Onthatscalethediameteroftheelectronitselfwillbeonly2000miles,andthediameterofthenucleus,wheremassandweightchieflylie,canbetakenastwomilesonly.Acentralmasstwomilesthick,anotherobject2000milesthickatadistanceofsome92million

miles!Evidently,plentyofroominsidethissystem.Andwhatdowemeanbyroom?Wedonotmeannothingness,butspaceandspaceisnotnothing.Itisidentifiablewiththeether(s),andtheetherismatterofextremedensity.Itissodensethatwecannotseeorfeelit,anditsfrictionasitflowsthroughthekindofmatterwedoseeandtouchissominutethatourinstrumentshavenotyetdetecteditwithcertainty.Inthisdensematter,insidethesystemofanyatomorcongregationofatomsofourworld,theremaybeotherworlds,andworldswithinthesealsoworldwithoutend.Thephysiscistwillsaythatforhimthecentersoftheatoms,thenuclei,seldomapproacheachothermuchcloserthanoneangstrom,whichisahundredmillionthofacentimeter.Anegativeelectronhasadiameterofabout35millionthsofaninch,sothatitwouldtakeabout30,000electrons,touchingeachother,tomeasureoneangstromandreachfromonenucleustoanother.Considerthecomparativevastnessofthespacewhichseparatesandunitesthepartsoftheatom.Itwastoillustratethisthatwemagnifiedtheatommathematicallyinthelastparagraph.Howmanyotheratomsmaylurkunseeninthesehuge,stellarinterspaces!Wespokeofthenucleusoftheatomasholdingnearlyallofitsmassandweight.Thelightestatomishydrogen,anditsmassisnearly1840timesthatofanegativeelectron.Butitisnotlargerinvolume,letustakegoodnoteofthat.Thelargethemassthesmallerthediameterisaxiomaticinpresentdayscience.Thenegativeelectronhasthegreatestvolumeofanyindividualbodyintheatom.Ifthedistancefromcentertocenterofnearestatomsis,say,twoangstroms,writesCrehoreinAtomicTheory(1942),andifthenegativeelectronisoftheorderof10^13(or1over10plus13ciphers)thevolumesaretoeachotherasthecubesofthesefigures,or10^15(10plus15ciphers).Thatistosay,thevolumeoftheatomis10^15timesasmuchasthevolumeofonesinglenegativeelectron.Adiamondisaverydensesubstance(3.55timesasdenseaswater).SupposewecouldputsuchpressureonadiamondthatitwascrowdedintoadensityequaltothatattributedtothestarWolf457orto500milliontimesthedensityofwater.Wold,bytheway,hasamasssome60timesthatofoursunbutisonlyabouthalfthesizeofourmoon,some3000milesindiameterThegreaterthemassthesmallerthediameter.Well,acubicinchofourcondenseddiamond(orofthestarmentioned)wouldweighabout9000tonsonourearth.Yetthenucleiofitsatomswouldstillbedistantfromeachother,from10^10to10^11centimeters.Thismeansthatthedistancebetweenthenucleiofitsatomswouldstillbebetween10and100timesthediameteroftheatomitself.Dowestillthinkthatourcubicinchofleadisalreadyhighlycondensed,toodensetobecompressedverymuch?Orthatthereisnoroominsideit,insidethesystemsofitsatoms?THELANDOFETHERIAThisisthelandofEtheria,Edenlandandthehomelandofourrace.Theosophicalwritershaveusedahelpfulillustration.Fillalargebucketwithlargestones,thenwithsmallstones,pebblesandgravelthrowninalso.Addsandtothebrimful,thenyoucanstilladdwaterinconsiderable

amounts.Allofthesethings,inasense,andifbyspaceyoumeanthesizeandshapeofthebucket,areinthesamespace.Soifourworldbeasandgrain,notehowmanyotherworldsgreatandsmallmaybeinthecosmiccontaineralongwithit.Notaveryaccurateillustration,ofcourse.Thingsdonotreallyoccupythesameplace;itisonlythattheenormousplaceswecallemptyareallfilledup.Forgetabouttheatomsforamomentandlookboutyouincommon,threedimensionalspace.Howmuchofitisfilled,eventooursenseperceptions?Doyoureallythinkthatthereisnothingbetweenyouandthewallyonder,orthetree,thecity,themountainsinthedistance,theheightoftheskyoverhead?Doestheideaofnothingnessmakeanysense,ifindeedonecanhavesuchanideaatall?Nophilosopherhasevermadeprofitfromsuchaconcept.Outofthevoideweread,thisorthatissuedforth;butagain,exnihilonihilfit;andfromNothingnothingwaseverborn.Eventhescientists,waryofpicturethinking,weregraveledbythisdifficulty.Actioindistans,theyusedtocallitortheproblemofactionatadistance.MAGNETISMANETHERICPHENOMENAHoldamagnetoveranailandamiracleoccurs,thenailjumpsasifproddedbydemons,yetnothingseemstoconnectthetwo.Wellthen,reasonstheexperimenter,weshallhavetoinventsomethingtoconnectthem.(Justas,iftherewerenoGodmanwouldneedtoinventone.Weshallinvent,orratherpostulatetheether.Apostulate,ifyouplease,isanecessaryassumption.Linesofforce,stresses,amagneticfield,allmakeitnecessarytoassumeaspacefillingmedium.Andthiscosmicfillerin,orpostulate,orether,wasforalongtimeanimmenseconvenience,alsoanimmenseembarrassment.Itwasnecessaryanditwasinconsistent,matterandnonMatter,stuffandnotstuff.CameEinstein,camethedawn(ordidit?)andagreatsenseofliberationwithhim.Mathematicallyspeakingtheethervasnolongernecessary;wecanusetheconceptofspaceinstead.ThatshutonePandorabox,evenwhileitopenedanotherone.Ifthemathematiciansarerelieved,philosophersandmetaphysicianshavehardlyshiftedtheirground.OnecuriousfactcametolightinconnectionwiththedevelopmentofEinstein'sequations.Themassofabody(thequantityofMatterinit)increaseswithvelocity,whenthevelocityapproachesthatoflight.Massthereforeisafunctionofvelocity.Ifvolumeremainsconstant,andthevelocityandhencethemassbeincreased,thedensity,orquantityofmatterperunitvolume,isalsoincreased.Thisobviouslyrestatesmuchofwhatwehavesaidaboutthenatureofdensityandoftheethericworlds.OnecuriousfactcametolightinconnectionwiththedevelopmentofEinstein'sequations.Themassofabody(thequantityofMatterinit)increaseswithvelocity,whenthevelocityapproachesthatoflight.Massthereforeisafunctionofvelocity.Ifvolumeremainsconstant,andthevelocityandhencethemassbeincreased,thedensity,orquantityofmatterperunitvolume,isalsoincreased.Thisobviouslyrestatesmuchofwhatwehavesaidaboutthenatureofdensityandoftheethericworlds.

Buttogobacktothenothingnesswhichliesbetweenyouandthemountainyonder,orbetweenyoureyeandyouroutstretchedhandasifnothingcouldlieanywhere!Withsuchaconcept,orallegedconcept,youcannotthinkatall.Youmerelyceasethinkinganduttercertainverbalsounds.Rosicrucianshaveaphraseforit:"SpaceistheunperceivedaspectofReality."Morebasicallystill,itisaformoraspectorconditionofconsciousnesswhichattendsonexperience.Wemustrefusethisinvitingbypath,whichwouldleadusasfarthegalaxiesatleast,andhumblyinviteyoutositdownandlookatspaceforafewminutesevenifyoucantseeit!Stoplookingthroughitatthethingbeyond,andtrylookingintoitinstead.Ifyoupracticethisabityou'llbegintoseethegrainingofit,somethinglikeheatwavesbutnotinmotion.Thatissaidtobetheauraandmaybeitis,butit'saprofitablehint.Ifyoukeptonlooking,conditioningyoureeyes,youmightlearntoseemanythingsinthis"nothingness",maybeevenanEthereanfriendortwooccasionally,or"marvelouscitiesbuildedintheblue"asdotheHinduseers.Butdontmakethemistakeoftellingpsychiatrists,medicalmenandpsychologistsaboutthis;youhavethreeguesseswhy. ***12 IIISince,torepeat,thisbookletisissuedinwhatweconceivetobethepublicinterest,itisimportanttoavoidtheappearanceofservinganyparticularcreedorcultorSchoolorotherorganization.'Wearedealing.withanintenselypracticalandfactualsituationthevisitationoftheethercraft(FlyingSaucers)andwithproblemsarisingfromit.Thewriterandhisassociatesbelievetheyhaveanexplanationofthesecraftwhichisbasicallycorrect;anditistheirhopethatitwillbeexaminedinthelightofallavailabledata,andalsofromarigidlyscientificpointofview.Theyhaveusedinformationfromeverypossiblesource,andsomeofthesesourceswoulddoubtlessbediscreditedaprioribymanyreaders.Noone,however,isaskedtorespectsuchsources,oranyallegedauthority,perse,butonlytolistencriticallyowhatissaidifhisinterestissufficient,andthereaftertoformhisownopinion.ThosewhowishasimplestatementofthemainissuesinvolvingtheDiscproblemwillperhapsfindalltheycareforinSectionIofthisbooklet.ThosewhocaretogoalittlefurtherintothescientificconceptswillfindthemsketchedinSectionII.Butitisalmostcertainthattheseethercraftwereknowninantiquity,andthatatleastafewpersonsofunusualtrainingorgiftshavealwaysunderstoodtheiroriginandpurposes.Anditisentirelycertain,andafamiliarfact,thattheancientsknewagooddealaboutEtheria,thatis,abouttheetheric"planes"orworlds.Whetherthereaderhasanyinterestorconfidenceinthislore,ishisownbusiness.Butfromourpointof'view,alldata,realoralleged,aboutEtheriaispertinentandcontributory,andwebelieveagoodmanypeopleareinterestedinit.WethereforedevoteafewparagraphsinthissectionIIItothistopic.
