  • A Seminar for Teachers and Teaching Artists

On a Saturday in late April 2013, Deborah Brzoska met with teaching artists and teachers from four Nebraska communities for

The Arts are About Ideas! During this full-day professional development seminar, K12 teachers and teaching artists from Crete, Macy, Madison and Lincoln uncovered new ways to use the arts to enhance learning across the curriculum. Brzoska demonstrated how integrating art encourages higher order thinking, creativity, and an open-minded exploration of ideas. She also illustrated how these new methods relate to state and national efforts to develop common core standards. Teams of artists and teachers shared effective residency strategies, and planned new arts integration lessons for 13/14.

Brzoska is part of a teaching artist cadre affiliated with the Kennedy Centers Partners in Education program. The Lied Center is one of nearly 100 Partners in Education teams across the nation that pairs a school district with a performing arts center. The Lied Center partners are the Umonhon Nation School and UNLs College of Education and Human Sciences.
