New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is planning to construct a new cultural centre, similar to India HabitatCentre (IHC) and India International Centre (IIC), in Sector 11 of Dwarka. To be called Indraprastha Sanskritik KalaKendra, the centre will have five blocks, built on 10 acres of land.
The centre will be located close to the IGI airport. It will be a green building with an eco- friendly design. “A lot of emphasis will be laid on creating green areas. We plan to have terrace gardens in the building blocks. Interlinkingpedestrian courtyards will be created for all buildings, connecting them with the natural landscape. The centre will bedisabled-friendly,” said an official. TOI took a sneak peek at the in-house design DDA has worked on and the residentsof Dwarka are bound to feel proud about this new project.
“The design for the building was finalized after studying similar structures across India. It has been prepared byDDA’s architecture department,” said DDA spokesperson, Neemo Dhar. The centre will be run on a ‘no-loss, no-profit’basis.
The centre will have dedicated sections for visual arts with provision for galleries on contemporary art and tribal art.Dance events, puppetry shows and theatre performances will take place at the centre of performing arts section, whichwill also include a recreational area with a specialty restaurant and bar, spas, aerobic hall and gym.

Sites are being identified for these proposed hubs inRohini and east Delhi. We are also trying to sort out some issues to start work on a similar hub in Sultangarhi,” saidDhar. Exgeneral manager of IIC Lalit Joshi has been working as advisor to DDA for all its cultural centres.
Sources said a council has been set up with eminent people from various professional backgrounds as itsmembers. It has reportedly sought measures to ensure membership for younger people so that “more vibrancy couldbe brought to the centre”.
According to DDA, the centre in Dwarka will be almost double the size of IIC and will have many more facilit ies.“Given its vibrant community, made up of people belonging to various cultures, Delhi requires more cultural centres. Our plan is to have centres like IIC in various parts of the city,” said an official.
