We offer advanced solutions forrailway trains – from start to finish.

Trains cover enormous distances. Day after day, year after year.

They transport us, and we empower them. We make them quick, strong and safe.

Because it's our engines that drive them.

MTU Friedrichshafen in Germany and Detroit Die-sel Corporation in the USA, two DaimlerChryslerGroup companies, have combined their off-high-way operations. With the product ranges of theMTU and DDC brands plus Mercedes-Benz engines under one umbrella, a world-leadingsupplier of engines and systems for the marine, rail, power generation, heavy duty military andcommercial-vehicle, and agricultural and construc-tion-industry machinery sectors has been created. All our products and services embody decades oftradition, highly innovative design, distilled exper-tise and an enormous passion for quality.

Modern passenger-service railcars – powered by MTU PowerPacks®

A passion that has driven MTU for many decades. As long ago as 1924, we were developing andmanufacturing production engines for scheduled-service trains. In 1933, our diesel engines provided the motivepower which enabled the legendary “FliegendeHamburger” to be the first high-speed railcar toreach 160 km/h.And from the early Fifties through to the Seventies,we supplied art in its full-scale programme of con-version to diesel power. The extensive experience and unique specialistknowledge gained from that history and traditionare the basis of our comprehensive expertise insystem engineering and of our renownedpowers of innovation.

We are among today’s leading providers of traction unit technology for railway applications.Locomotive and railcar producers all over theworld place their trust in us as system suppliers.

We and our partners are developing today thetechnologies that will drive us tomorrow. And thatsimply means that we offer the rail operator more:more performance, more efficiency – andmore dependability.

The outstanding reputation of our locomotiveengines and traction systems is no accident. Their success is based on a large number of spe-cific qualities and advantages that make themthe first choice for any application:

Advanced environmental technology for reducing exhaust emissions and noiselevels; compliance with the current standards (EURO II and EURO III / UIC II) and the potential to meet future requirements (UIC III)

Maximum economylow consumption; long service life and low operating costs

We are helping to shape the future.

In years to come, the fuel cell will revolution-ize energy conversion technology. And MTU isalready part of that revolution.

Fuel cell technology can be used not only in fixedinstallations but also in mobile applications. Of particular interest for transport power units –both on road and rail – is the PEM (ProtonExchange Membrane or Polymer ElectrolyteMembrane) fuel cell.

In contrast with other fuel cells, it operates at atemperature of only around 80 °C. At that rela-tively low – but specifically for rail applications –optimum operating temperature the cell useshydrogen and air to produce electricity and heat –ideal for the climate and safe for the environment.

The fuel cell is also highly efficient. Efficiencylevels of 50 % are already being achieved, and areexpected to improve even further as developmentprogresses. Intense efforts have been underway for a longtime at MTU to ensure that today’s vision be-comes tomorrow’s reality. In the application of ground-breaking new pro-cesses and technologies – technologies that aresustainable, zero-emission and highly efficient –we will continue to lead the way and play our partin shaping the future today.

The engine of your success.

The advantages of our diesel engines:

Modern high-speed trains are powered byreliable and durable MTU diesel engines.

MTU traction systems for mainline andmultipurpose locomotives are designed for the widest possible variety of operating conditions. They are equally at home in heavy-duty freighttrains and at high speeds on passenger serv-ices.

Because of their excellent partial-load andacceleration characteristics, MTU engines arealso ideally suited to use in shunting andindustrial locomotives whose duty profilesinvolve frequent load changes and which oper-ate primarily at the lower end of the powercurve.

Compact MTU diesel engines are used all overthe world in a wide variety of specialized railvehicles.Their low exhaust emissions mean that theymeet the fundamental requirement for use intunnel service locomotives or in units for construction and maintenance work on under-ground railways.

MTU engines are suitable not only for diesel-electric, diesel-hydraulic and diesel-mechanicalbut also for diesel-hydrostatic tractionsystems. So they can also be used in con-struction and specialized vehicles that operate at lowest speeds.

Modern trains and railcars around the globeare driven by MTU PowerPacks®.This innovative traction system integrates all drive train components on a common sub-frame into a single functional unit and be-cause of its ultra low-profile dimensions isideally suited to underfloor installation in rail-cars. And for passengers that means moreroom and noticeably more comfortable travel.

Its numerous advantages including compactdimensions, small number of interfaces withexternal systems, ease of installation and com-patibility of constituent systems make thePowerPack® the ideal traction system for this type of application.

Repowering solutions for railway locomotives: As good as new.

10 | 11

Refitting existing locomotives with modern dieselengines is often the economical alternative tothe procurement of new stock – and offers threemajor benefits:

Low investment costs

The availability of repowered locomotives is raised to the level of new stock.

The use of a modern MTU engine reduces running and maintenance costs therebyimproving economic efficiency for the operator.

As an expert provider, MTU not only supplies theengines for a repowering project but also offerscomprehensive support:

Design and implementation of the tractionsystem, active assistance at all stages of therepowering project based on professionalsystem engineering.

Supply of technologically advanced and fullypractice-proven engines offering

compact dimensions for trouble-free installa-tion in existing engine bays

excellent power-to-weight ratios for obtaininghigher power without exceeding axle weightlimits

After conversion, operators benefit from the fol-lowing economizing potential based on loweroperating costs:

Reduction of fuel consumption even whenrunning at less than full power and at idlingspeed

Short idle times due to high availability andreliability levels

Lower investment costs due to reduction ofreserve stock numbers

Long service intervals and minimal mainte-nance costs thanks to a new maintenanceconcept

Advanced combustion technology combinedwith low fuel and oil consumption provideminimal emissions and noise pollution andtherefore a high level of environmental accept-ability
