Words to Know

Nuestro salón by Lila Pritchard

Build BackgroundRead the title to children and ask them if the front cover reminds them of a class picture. Encourage children to use their knowledge of school to think about the book. Anticipate the text with a question such as: ¿Qué cosas les gusta hacer en la escuela?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that this book tells about things a classroom of children like to do at school. Remind children that some pictures in the book have labels to name things.

Page 7: Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them read.

ReadAs the children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability.

Respond to the TextPersonal ResponseAsk children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found most interesting.Suggested language: ¿Les gustaría ser parte de la clase del libro? ¿Por qué sí? ¿Por qué no?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, help children understand these teaching points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• The class has a lot of kids who have lots of fun.

• Students count, read, paint, sing, build, fi x things, and write.

• Students have fun playing, too.

• People enjoy different things about school.

• School can be a lot of fun and educational at the same time.

• The author uses details to show different activities children like to do.

• Some words are labeled in the illustrations.

• The author uses repeated sentence patterns.

Choices for SupportFluencyInvite children to choose a passage from the text to read aloud. Remind children to read sentences ending with exclamation points with enthusiasm.

Phonemic Awareness and Word WorkProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:

• Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book such as: muchos, botones, insectos, letras, libros, cuadro, música, historias. Have them clap on each syllable: mu-chos, bo-to-nes, in-sec-tos, le-tras, etc.

• Build Sentences Materials: index cards. Write the high frequency words from Nuestro salón on index cards: historias, siempre, contento, diferente, cuando. Then write students’ names on index cards, as well as other content words: gusta, le, escribir, a, lee, libros, cuadro, gimnasia, hace, etc. Have children build sentences using the word cards. Provide some blank index cards for children to write other words as they need them. Remind them to use the book, Nuestro salón, as well as other resources, such as the Word Wall, to help them fi nd more words for their sentences.

Writing About ReadingCritical ThinkingRead the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 27.6 and guide them in answering the questions.

RespondingRead aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities.

Target Comprehension SkillText and Graphic Features

Target Comprehension Skill Remind children to think about how words on

a page work with the art. Model how the words work with the art:

Think Aloud

En la página 7, leí que Ema construye torres con niños. ¿Qué signifi ca eso? Pero cuando miré la ilustración, entendí. A Ema le gusta que los niños se trepen unos sobre otros para hacer torres. La ilustración me ayudó a entender lo que quería decir la autora.

Practice the SkillHave children choose another picture from the book and tell how it helped them understand the words on the page.

Writing PromptRead aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6.

Think about all the things in this book. Which one do you like to do best at school? Draw a picture. Show what you like to do best.

Write about why you like to do that.
