4:1A number of architects were given the opportunity by Alberto Alessi and Alessandro Mendini to develop a limited edition of domestic objects akin to the formula of the 1980s launched Tea & Coffee Piazza series. The brief called for a coffee and tea setting, including a sugar bowl, milk jug and tray.

The prototype of City of Towers is formed by a subtraction of the functional components of a pot, such as handle and spout, instead of their classical adding up. An iconic spout, conserving the memory of a traditional object, is deducted from a solid block,

while the usual handle is replaced by a comfortable width of the solid, materialised in insulating polyurethane.

As a further abstraction all different pieces are reduced to one standard size, avoiding any customary height hierarchy. The duplicated transparent volumes indicate their particular use by showing a suggestive inner profile. Despite the expected alignment of the bottoms of the objects, the different inner vacuums are aligned along their tops.

The tray has been formed through identically shaped surfaces that neglect

a designation of an upper and an under side. In order to provide a comfortable hold on the tray, two handles have been generated through subtracting an imprint of an abstract human hand.

The complete setting is fabricated out of elastic polyurethane that functions as an isolator and provides a soft sound when placed on a surface.

1:2A relaxing chair that encourages active use is Jellyfish, a seat for lounging, for listening to music, for having a bite to eat, for talking with friends. The dynamic Jellyfish is a modern rocking chair. Owing to the rounded form of the base, the chair moves slightly. It’s a seat that ruffles the feathers, so to speak, but in a positive way. The standard Jellyfish House collection is produced in sturdy rotation moulded Polyurethane, which is extremely well suited for outdoor use. The same frame is used as the base for an upholstered edition in leather or fabric; therefore some of these chairs have the same external appearance.

1:2The design of the Sports College LR + VN in Leidsche Rijn, one of the suburbs of Utrecht, included the development of a series of custom-built furniture for students. The furniture’s achromatic appearance results from the color nuances used on the facade and in the interior of the college itself. The furniture’s white surfaces are best suited to reflect the range of colors generated and multiplied by varying light conditions.

Essential pieces of the series are the LRC Chair, as well as different sized LRC Tables adjustable in height. A few

accessories, such as lockers, magnetic boards, dustbins and coat hooks complement the series. At the moment some of the products are tested with respect to mass production suitability.

1:2Il Bagno Alessi Dot is a collection whose design steps off from the premise that its individual pieces should not distract from the wish to purge the body of impurities. Every component of each item should be in the service of relaxation. Within this frame of reference the circle, though not explicitly present, is the key design determinant for the ceramic items, chrome-plated elements and furniture alike. The bath and the basins have a fully flush upper surface allowing and even encouraging cleaning fluids and other equipment to be placed right next to the water holding recesses, within easy reach.

The components from which the taps are assembled share a single diameter so that there is no sense of hierarchy; the same holds for the accessories. The glass of the shower booth relates to the other items and to its surroundings as an autonomous feature unmediated by elements foreign to it. It should be clear by now that the combination of all pieces in the collection proceeds from the individual strength of each one, which has its own role to play though without being overbearing. The furniture assumes the formal idiom of the sanitary ware, engaging with it in a harmonious relationship. Altogether,

and for this reason, it is a well-balanced collection whose aim is to allow its users to enjoy to the fullest the quintessential element our planet has to offer, namely water.

IL BAGNO DOT ALESSI + LAUFEN + ORAS (IN PRODUCTION) 2007-2004

1:50The vacation retreat for the Wielheesen family is located on a slim lot close to the beach. A long building in front of the site is blocking its view to the sea on the ground floor. Therefore, the program calls for the swimming pool to be an extension of the roof terrace, creating a long-distance view. The house is organised in relation to three different routes. In addition to the main entrance, a separate entrance provides direct access, via a green ramp, to the guest rooms. A third route continues the path from the beach and leads to the roof garden without people having to enter the house. Indoor and outdoor spaces

interweave by separating the private and public programs via an outdoor staircase, cut as a cross into the volume. Various stairways serve as connectors between the different levels; steep and shallow stairs differentiate the speed of movement and the mood. The living and dining areas that face their respective outside conditions at the opposite ends of the house are connected by a ‘slow’ public stair, while a short-cut links the family’s private zones as well as the living room and the kitchen. Both circulation systems intertwine and confront each other.

1:50Art as part of life was the main purpose of the small house in the 17th-century pleasure garden belonging to Wijlre Castle. It accommodates seemingly disparate spaces, i.e. two greenhouses, a hen house, a tool shed and a living room, together with the space for art.

A linear exhibition space folds out into one of the gardens compartments enclosed by hedges, offering maximum wall surface, and defining exterior spaces between the hedge and the outer wall of the building. The itinerary of the exhibition becomes part of the overall routing in the park by way of

two entrances⁄exits to and from the private and the public sites.

The height of the hedges, together with the stacked organization of the required interior spaces, creates an introvert exhibition gallery in the basement. The upper layers of living room, greenhouses, tool shed and chicken house, which are orientated to the outside, determine the different heights of the ceilings in the exhibition area and define the sources of daylight. Top, side, indirect, and zenith light for the collection penetrates the building at the thresholds between the art gallery and the other spaces.

The materials inside and outside the gallery are limited to glass and exposed concrete, in addition to the plastered exhibition walls.

1:50Designed for a couple, the H-House is located in a leafy area of Maastricht. The clients are a dancer and an actor, as well as landscape architects. Behind the site is a garden, which is occasionally opened to the public.

The interior is primarily a single loft like space with a central mezzanine. Two smaller independent volumes - entrance and bathroom - are adjacent to this main volume.

The position and shape of the house are defined by the terraces, which each have their own, separate character.

Having no structural walls, a few rectangular columns support the slabs positioned to minimize impact. All other walls, whether internal or external consist of glass.

The stair is an independent object within this setting. The required range of privacy can be set with a series of curtains, which softly define the interior spaces.

The combination of transparent and opaque glass and sliding or fixed façade areas creates a number of different possible responses to the changing of

the seasons and the fading of the light. The spaces of the house are suffused with richness due to the layering of this unadorned configuration, the combination of materials and the variations in usage.

1:50The V’ House is located in the city center of Maastricht, where building laws for this part of the city require that new projects are confined within the envelope of existing buildings. The volume of the existing storage building is made habitable by cutting out voids to bring in light, air and green. On the main facade, another cut creates a triangular surface that leads over from the sloped roof to the vertical wall of the adjacent building. Surrounded by brick houses, the V-house appears like an implant of glass in its environment.

The 450 m2 villa was designed for a

couple that collects vintage cars. The street-level entrance is a covered external space where several of the cars can be placed. From here the house is accessed via a ramp that leads through the different parts of the villa. Secondary circulation consisting of an elevator and a staircase, allows for a vertical shortcut through the house.

An open kitchen and dining room is into the living room one meter below and the roof garden above. The second floor contains the private rooms: sleeping, relaxing and bathing furniture are arranged around a walk-in closet.

The roof garden is also accessible from this level. The different parts of the house are interwoven by the ramps.

3x3m sliding doors perforate the structural glass façade, complimented by highly polished, reflective, in-situ concrete. Together with custom furnishing, the house is an expression of free space in a regulated heritage context.

1:50The clients had bought a piece of wooded land to build a house for themselves and their six children who do not live at home permanently. As they were afraid that the large house would feel empty when occupied only by them, it was conceived as a one-storey building that unfolds into a two-storey building when the upper spaces are inhabited. That is, the house was to appear as a one-storey building with a prominent roof literally recalling a hat.

The ground floor encompasses everything the couple would use when alone, as well as the common spaces

they would share with their children and guests. A glass façade encloses the entire floor, which includes freestanding interior elements separating and zoning the various spaces. From the inside there is a strong visual connection to the natural surroundings as well as a physical one created by large sliding doors which turn the indoor spaces into generous covered terraces. These terraces continue into a wooden platform on which the entire building sits.

The upper floor containing private rooms and common areas is clad with reflecting glass panes. Reflecting the

woods and sky around, it also creates the perception of depth inherent to mirrors. Four large shutters within this façade can be opened when guests or the children occupy the first floor. The upper floor façade is lowered on the east side to allow for privacy, given the existence of a close by neighbour. The camouflaging quality of the upper floor thus hides the possible void created by that floor when unoccupied, yet emphasizes the natural surroundings the inhabitants longed for when purchasing this piece of land.

1:100The design consists of four elements: four separate but closely grouped towers. The unit has twenty-one floors of which each contains five apartments. The tower block, standing on the island formerly occupied by the Royal Netherlands Steamboat Company, has a view of Amsterdam in one direction and of the waters of Ijsselmeer in the other.

The four elements comprising the tower block come into confrontation with the ground plane at different heights. Fluctuating in height with regard to the ground floor level, the elements

are designed so as to create a skyline, as it were, at ground floor level. Views are afforded through the indoor car park from this level as well. The facade is made of a skin of concrete elements poured into a rubber mould to create a ‘continuous’ skin line appearance.

The colossal volumes of the tower complex become particularly striking through the solution of the towers’ stylobate: the massive towers are suspended before touching the ground, in what Jos Bosman has perceptively termed as an ‘inverted skyline’, so as to allow for a horizontal slice, a framed

panoramic view of the Y of the river. The ground floor thus becomes an equivalent of the terrace. Such interplay between different architectural components is also echoed in the pavement-like treatment of the vertical cladding.

1:100The structure of the two residential blocks is an intervention in the centre of Rotterdam, a city that is naturally incised by a network of flowing waters. The site of the project is an old commercial trade grounds. The emerging scenery is therefore one of compatibility; the coexistence of the old and the new.

The first incision in the body of the structure is the new bridge that functions not only as linkage between both sides of the river promenade but also as an object that separates the two towers by creating a vertical void between them.

The massiveness of the volume is negated by the introduction of a glass wedge creating a panorama of floating towers which apparently disobey the logic of gravity. The residual spaces are well organized to accommodate the parking spaces, the hall of the towers, the grand cafe and the technical rooms.

Stacked onto the top of the glass wedge is the hovering volume skinned in black concrete mantle. It contains the communal parking places, the storage levels and the lobbies of the towers. Standing prominently on top of this volume and projecting vertically into the

blue sky are the two towers. They are composed of 290 apartments stacked into 29 storeys.

a hint of the view across Amsterdam before the full prospect unfolds inside the apartment.

The core of the tower will be poured in situ for stability. A series of stabilizing walls and strategically positioned columns allows for a high percentage of perforation within the lower part of the core to enable transparent entrance conditions. Both columns and floors are prefabricated to keep down costs and construction time.

The smooth glass-and-aluminium surface of the A’ Tower amplifies the

shadow play caused by the changing contours. The texture of the prints on the glazed panels can be observed only when close by. Despite the building’s great height, huge push-slide windows generously open up apartments to the outside.

Page 47: E004. Less Weight More Scales - Wiel Arets Architects

The A’ Tower is the only housing high-rise among a number of office high-rises in Amsterdam Zuid-Oost, a large-scale business and entertainment district. Infrastructure and wide boulevards dominate the area, which due to the lack of housing is deserted when the commercial facilities close down. Positioned at the Arena Boulevard next to the Arena stadium, the tower will revitalize the surroundings outside working hours.

For the mainly domestic programme the volume is assembled from individual levels shifted out of alignment. These

shifted storeys not only define a characteristic contour of the 150m high-rise, they also break the high winds around it. Where the lower tower meets the boulevard the public floors are displaced even more to provide a wind protected entrance situation.

The equally simply layered public programmes include a 15m tall lobby with an art gallery, sports and restaurant facilities, all of which are indicative of the tower’s elegance. The glazed floor of the cantilevered swimming pool 15m above street level offers the most spectacular views out, along with many

sight lines to the sports facilities. The shifted outline of the private levels form varied typologies within a fixed layout. Their sizes range from small studios to large six-room apartments. The top levels accommodate seven luxury triplex penthouses, with internal voids and the highest roof terraces in the city.

High-speed elevators bring people either to the public facilities, which also have an independent entrance and circulation, or to their respective apartment floors. The hallway on these levels is extended to the façade to deliver daylight inside and also to give

1:100Stadionkwartier, the area next to the PSV Stadium in Eindhoven, is an integral part of the ‘Strijp S’ urban plan drawn up by West 8. The brief includes the E’ Tower, E’ Block and a slender end piece of the adjacent Block J, all apartment buildings in this emerging district.

Two gaps between the E’ Tower and Block J, one public for the entrance and one covered and private, provide active outdoor spaces adjacent to the high-rise.

With its programme of simplex apartments, the tower effects the horizontal stacking of slabs. All around the slabs a series of specifically shaped brises soleils projects a

shadow play onto the glazed façade. Made of polished aluminium, the reflective brises soleils will look different depending on the angle of the light. A subtle cantilever on each side of the tower at different heights enhances its sculptural aspect.

The façade is in semi-structural glazing with the sliding panels marked with a print. Behind them, every apartment has a kind of conservatory that serves as a balcony in summer and can be used as an extra room during the cooler months. The abstract horizontal print will be amplified on the ground and top floors recalling the plinth and crown of the Classical Orders.

The interaction of the slight shift of volume, staggered surfaces of the opening panels in the façade and moving lines of the slabs creates a dynamic entity.

Since the most fantastic aspect of a tower apartment is the long-distance view, one will perceive it immediately on entering the apartment. To fully free the façade, all services and shafts of the apartments are efficiently connected to the core. These define the supporting structure, together with the amorphously shaped columns, which taper with height. The reflections on the highly polished surface of the columns will make their contours even less legible.

1:100The B’ Tower is located in the centre of Rotterdam, immediately adjacent to the Bijenkorf department store designed by Marcel Breuer in the mid 1970s. Because of its commercial context the site below the Bijenkorf’s roofline is to be fully occupied, while above it, just thirty per cent of the lot, towards the sunken shopping mall Beurstraverse, has been released to build a high-rise tower. In order to avoid splitting the project into a basement and a tower, the design stacks three volumes of similar height. The ground-related one contains a fashion store, The Sting, and a fully automatic car park; the two upper

ones contain apartments.

Accordingly, the entrance to the store faces the pedestrian precinct whereas the private and service parts of the building can be accessed from the side road. The minimized core of the high-rise can access up to seven flats per floor so as to keep up with changing market demands. The shifting of volumes in and out of alignment defines two areas of different depth in relation to the central circulation, resulting in two principal layouts for the apartments. In the less-deep ones, the bathroom gives a view of the city.

Analogous to Breuer’s building, the façade is not related to the separate levels but to the respective volumes. The skin, which consists of alternating glazed and aluminum panels, is an extrusion of the bottom plan. A series of cantilevered balconies clustered in a few lines takes care of the larger scale. The alternation of closed and open façade panels responds to the principal apartment types.

1:100The Valid tower is part of the Flightforum in Eindhoven, an industrial park to an urban plan by MVRDV. It is based on six clusters dropped loosely into the landscape and accessed from a looping road, a branch connection of the A2.

The tower, which contains offices, is situated in cluster 1 where all buildings with office functions are concentrated. The site is cut across its full length by a parking garage whose roof creates a platform for a second urban level, which even contains a bus line. While the main entrance of the tower is related to the elevated level, delivery and parking take

place at the level of the ring road.

The thirteen stacked floors correspond exactly with the geometry of the given polygonal footprint, resulting in a somewhat slender volume. Apart from the shared facilities, the entrance lobby and the lounge on the top levels, there is no difference in height between floors. The plan view is zoned by two shafts that leave a bay’s width to the exterior skin and thus allow continuous circulation just inside the façade. The inner organization of the shafts allows for a layout of cellular as well as landscape offices. Besides the two shafts, only

three irregularly shaped columns are needed to support the building.

The glazed outer surface is treated with a reflecting silver print, effecting an alternation between transparency and a reflection of the tower’s skin. The mirroring ranges from clear at the top to diffuse below, depending on the density of the applied silver dots, from picturing the surroundings on the façade to allowing a glance inside.

Absorption versus confrontation, working in a concentrated way versus communication, is the main premises in this library where the infrastructure has more than one function. This also determines the route’s programme, as the bar, the lounge area, the reception corner, the auditorium, the desks, all fitted with red rubber and other programmes such as shops, add an extra dimension to the route, thereby

breaking down the mono-functionality of the library program.

The UBU, comparable to a data recorder, is more than a place where people can consult books, it is a place where they can work in a concentrated fashion, but also one where they can meet other people without the need of any other stimulation except the atmosphere that the building radiates.

The book depots, which seem to float midair, divide the space into zones and are interconnected by stairs and slopes. All in black figured concrete on which a partly double-glazed facade to which a silk-screened figurative pattern has been applied in order to let natural light into

the building encases the reading rooms. The glass façade also encloses the car park like a smooth skin, thereby making it an integral part of the complex.

On one side it is the university site where the view from the raw interior offers a filtered prospect of the open countryside surrounding it, on the other, there is the view of the long slopes situated beside the inner courtyard that work as blinds to filter the view of the car park.

Based on the idea that silent communication is important in a building

where there is hardly any talking, the atmosphere is determined with an emphasis on creating a sense of security. That was essential for the choice of a black interior.

A light, shiny floor provides enough reflection of natural or artificial light to illuminate some of the 42 million books that are on open shelves, while the long white tables make it possible to read a book or to consult electronic information media with little effort.

The individual workplace with full facilities is the key element, and has been

1:200The multifunctional Euroborg stadium is a catalyst for a multiplicity of amenities that do not compete with the facilities in the city centre, but reinforce Groningen’s key position in the north of Holland. The complex houses theatres, sports facilities, shops, offices, apartments and catering establishments, in a synergy that benefits both users and facility managers. Rather than a conventional stadium with a football pitch, Euroborg will be a sort of microcosm where social interaction and social control go hand in hand. The stadium itself is an empty space constructed under architecture, with capacity for 22,500 spectators. It

can be adjusted to reflect its use, which can be related to the activities of the entire complex. The project is modeled on the amphitheatre of the Tuscan town of Lucca that, over the years, evolved into an urban square surrounded by a double ring of possibilities. This is why there are no front and rear situations; the specific function of the place dictates its ultimate design. The outer spaces along the Oude Windschoterdiep are part of the public recreation amenities. Billboards can be placed in the area surrounding the transformer substation alongside the Europaweg, for instance, advertising the activities and events

going on behind. The public tribunes of the stadium are built up out of two rings. Fitted with communication facilities, the skyboxes, VIP areas and seats rented by companies can also be used for congresses.

seems to come alive due to the use of an internal mechanism. The students of one school perceive the students of the other as framed within a paradisiacal condition.

The central volume consists of a thin steel-concrete structure, carrying four large roof beams, from which the floors of this building are suspended. The structure and concrete walls, mostly left exposed, create a rough interior sustaining the adolescent behaviour of its users as well as meeting the limited budget requirements. An all around glazed façade exposes all activities

taking place to the yards and adjacent education wings, the latter consisting of a prefab concrete structure and prefab façade elements. These self-supporting sandwich panels are stacked in a way not only to provide maximal openings to the classrooms, but also to give stability to the building. When approaching the campus complex, one notices a subtle movement in the shiny black panels in which a constant graduated relief offering tactile qualities in the concrete has been cast.

Page 77: E004. Less Weight More Scales - Wiel Arets Architects

Since the context of the sports campus Leidsche Rijn is a newly built housing district within the periphery of Utrecht, the proposed configuration aims to contribute a rather public and iconographic aspect to the predominantly low-rise area, lacking points of recognition. At the same time social interaction among the students and social control should be simplified and supported. Therefore the two schools, divided up into four wings stretched out till terrain boundaries, are organized around a centrally positioned volume containing the shared facilities. The so defined yards, varying in surface

and geometry, give orientations, multiple visual connections and draw the entire mass to scale.

Beside its educational program the campus accommodates a gymnasium and a vocational school, in and outdoor sports facilities and a cultural centre. The various uses are integrated within one solitary structure, where they complement as well as differentiate each other.

Because of diverse colour nuances applied to facade and interior, the two schools have separate identities;

a shade of yellow-green is used for the gymnasium and a shade of purple-red for the vocational school. An overlay of these colours is chosen for the commonly used part. In changing weather conditions, varying natural and artificial light, a range of new colours arises inside the building and reflects on the completely white, unique furniture. In addition this achromatic interior will be variegated by its students and teaching material. The auditorium of both schools is divided by a large lit double-glazing glass wall, on each side of which artist Marijke van Warmerdam has portrayed a Dutch landscape that

Less Weight More Scales

ZEZEZE Gallery, Tel Aviv May-June 2007

The exhibition avoids the documentation of our current work through elaborate presentation models and pictures. Nothing on display in the ZeZeZe Gallery is supposed to be repackaged and shipped to another place after the exhibition. Due to our fondness for traveling light, the exhibition will be filled with unpretentious models made out of foam.

Various sized projects, ranging from domestic products, customized houses to public buildings are scaled down to almost equally sized models. As abstract monochrome objects they allow for many readings and therefore involve the visitors imagination.

The space itself will be lined with a working drawing of one of our recent buildings, at the scale of 1:2. The construction document not only provides the layout for the exhibition, but also forms a second topology besides the original one intended by extruding parts of the drawing.

Both the inartificial foam models and the complex construction document can be seen as the opposing ends which one constantly moves between while developing a project within the studio.

Four videos on rented LCD screens give an outlook on the public buildings in use. The cinematic sequences mediate between the insights into the workshop objects and the inhabited reality.

The Fourth Dimension

Wiel Arets Architects at the ZEZEZE Gallery

The exhibition designed by Wiel Arets Architects is proof that simplicity can bread complexity. By using relatively simple means - “simple” as compared to an exhibition hall stacked with high-tech paraphernalia, elaborate models and prints - Wiel Arets Architects have created a spatial event which is greater than the sum of its components, where foam, a seemingly innocent material, takes on an inquiring, even subversive, role.

The exhibition transverses beyond the striking works of Wiel Arets Architects, imparting insights and raising questions on multiple layers on the nature of architecture and architectural representation. Issues of scale, color, presentation, design methodology and effort, and interactivity, are presented to the visitor in concert, questioning the nature of what might before appear axiomatic.

For the ZeZeZe Gallery, this exhibition is an original take on what Bruno Zevi termed the “physical and dynamic element in creation and perception of the fourth dimension through walking”. It invites inquiry, circulation, peering at different angles and from different directions, the architecture presented is best experienced actively in a series of movements and gazes which integrate into a four-dimensional impression. Or rather, it can only be experienced in this manner.
