Vigo Vigo is the largest city in the region of Galicia, in the north-west of Spain, with a population of
over 300,000 inhabitants. It is the closest European city to New York and is situated in the
Portuguese border in one of the most picturesque bays in Spain.
Vigo is the leading fishing harbour in Europe and the main traffic route to North and South
American markets with the second most productive automotive plant in the continent (PSA-
Citröen). Over the last years, many prestigious Chinese companies such as CITIC HEAVY
INDUSTRIES, CHINA SONANGOL AND SINOMASTER have established operations in the city and
have selected Vigo as an attractive area for investments in a variety of sectors.
The city has more than 23 kilometres of coastline and unique landscapes, such as the Cies
Islands, home to The Rodas Beach, which has been classified as THE BEST BEACH IN THE
WORLD by “The Guardian” British Newspaper and selected for the European Odyssey 2010 by
the National Geographic Society. Vigo is surrounded on the one side by the bay, and on the other
side by mountains and woodlands, therefore there are magnificent viewpoints from which to
admire the scenery.
The local climate is characterized by mild winters, and warm but not extreme summers,
because the temperature does not normally exceed 32 º C. Vigo is the main tourist destination in
the North of Spain, being a regular stop for international cruise ships. Vigo is famous for its
excellent seafood restaurants which offer a wide range of gastronomical riches of the Atlantic
sea.
Also, the city is conveniently situated to visit important tourist destinations in Spain and
Portugal. Santiago de Compostela is 100 kms far; Madrid is at forty five minutes and Barcelona
at one hour by plane, and the beautiful Portuguese city of Oporto is just at 150 kms.
