Core Inflation

Core Inflation is defined as the persistent component of measured inflation that 

excludes volatile and controlled prices. It reflects the normal supply and demand 

conditions in the economy.

• Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) – consumer price index (CPI), a producer price

index (PPI)

 – a wholesale price index (WPI) – the Sensitive Price Index (SPI)

 – a GDP deflator.

• SBP – for monetary policy, focus on the CPI andcore inflation measures based on the CPI.

Causes of Inflation in Pakistan

• The rigidity in inflation is principally due to:

 – rising international prices of manycommodities

 – weakening of the rupee

 – moderate recovery in the domestic economy

 – an upward adjustment in administered prices

of power and key fuels. – Increased money supply

Consensus has developed among theeconomists that the inflation and output

growth are negatively correlated speciallyat the level of double digit inflation. Soinflation should remain single digit and

ideally in the range of 2.5%
