When I came to KIS I was informed that the 1:1 Apple Macbook laptop program was well underway with the infrastructure having been set up and running properly.

What I found was KIS purchasing Macbooks for teachers and requiring parents to buy Macbooks for students, but failing to provide adequate wireless network so the computers could be properly used in the classroom.

Progress made:• KIS signed a contract with Aruba Networks for a managed wireless network.• Aruba has rewired the LAN in the High and Middle School, and will also do the new building

currently under construction.• Aruba installed wireless access points (WAP) and Cisco network switches in the schools.• KIS signed a contract with Power School to replace the Reddiker software used in past.• KIS installed a new server for Power School and we will start implementation in one week.• The A/V studio is now starting to be used, two visiting authors’ interviews with students have been

recorded and edited. • The administration has learned that we must test for at least one month any new system before

we deploy.

This was the first work I experienced in Asia. While I found working at a Korean “Hagwon“ leaves a lot to be desired, I was fortunate to have great people as students and many of them are still good friends. They introduced me to Korea, and I have travelled to many places throughout the country.

At YBM I was a conversational English, and Business English, Instructor. My students ranged in age from Kindergarten to adults:• Hot Topics (current events) Classes from Basic Level to Advanced.• Business English Classes from Basic Level to Advanced.• Middle/High School Classes CNN Series

Gulfstream designs and manufactures business-class jets. The G150 and G200 are made under contract by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)

Gulfstream uses a different CAD-CAM system than IAI, so there are problems transferring data between the two companies. My tasks included: finding ways to accurately transfer this data, informing both companies what data, where, and for what models the data applied, and providing a fast and easy method for the staff to use.

I learned both PLM database systems, and both CAD systems used in each company, refined and documented the best practices for transferring the data, and captured the error logs.

Following this, I did some batch programming to generate VRML images of the CAD parts, and provided the specifics of the data transfer with the image file. Since the CAD file name matched the image file name, when an engineer saw the image of the part needed, that person then also knew the CAD part number, and database location. Perhaps it’s a little like adding pictures to a dictionary.

Then came the instruction phase, where I would teach the use of the catalog to the engineering staff.

Sandia makes nuclear weapons and is a top secret research organization. They had decided to upgrade their database, and I had been assigned project responsibility to migrate 8.7 million database objects during a scheduled three month period. In order to successfully complete the project:• We define data issues that required corrective

action prior to migration start.• Carried through data changes and corrections as

necessary.• Tested data conversion software to validate

functionality for ProE 2000 – Wildfire 2.0 CAD systems.

• Introduced VMware to IT engineers, software developers, and field engineers to support uniform data conversion software testing.

• Streamlined testing to fully exercise data migration within project timeline.

• During conversion software testing, discovered critical bugs which would have corrupted the data and caused project failure.

Aerokraft designs and manufactures precision investment cast tooling for various aerospace components including hollow jet engine turbine blades.

I had been able to work with Aerokraft in different capacities since first meeting them through my work at McDonnell Douglas in the late 80’s. Throughout this time I assisted in their CAD-CAM system selection, computer workstation and server installation, provided them CAD-CAM

software applications, set up their network, and managed their systems.Often in a medium size company the scope of work is broad, which can be more fun and is

always more challenging. Aerokraft was running on a system I designed and installed when I shut down my consulting business in 1999 and went to Sweden to work with Saab. I visited them in ~2004 and they were still running on the same systems, but they needed maintenance and rework. Due to the downturn in economics at the time, they had substantially downsized, and needed to scale down their systems and costs. Here’s what I did for them starting 2004:• Replaced UNIX server with network addressable drive.• Backed-off all data, creating a reference archive• Decommissioned their HPUX server and RAID• Installed hardware firewall and reconfigured internal

network for private IP addresses• Set up DHCP server, decommissioned old network

switches and set up managed network switch.• Reconfigured Fadal CNC machine (above, right) control

operating system and TCPIP network capability• Rewired new PC power supplies as needed to match

Fadal motherboard power inputs. Added cabinet cooling fans.

• Upgraded Fadal controls with maximum RAM, CDROM, high density floppy drives, and Flat-Screen monitors

• Replaced original Fadal boot drives with Compact Flash memory cards inserted in CF-IDE Drive adapter cards (lower right), saving ~$4,000.00 USD in Fadal upgrade costs for each of the 15 CNC machining centers

• Provided system administration, tool design, CAM-CNC Programming, Software Development

• Ran CMM and performed inspection reports of tooling and parts

BE makes aircraft seating for the majority of airlines. When I came into the the company they had a planned six-month upgrade for their CAD-CAM server, all engineering workstations operating systems and CAD-CAM, and PLM data management software, IMAN.

I worked as a consultant/mentor, with 120 engineers supporting CAD-CAM and PLM software issues and problems. I was also performed upgrades, in total I provided:• HPUX server install, PLM upgrade and Implementation• Update operating systems on 10 HPUX workstations and 65

PC’s, update CAD software on all workstations and PC’s• Managed CNC Post Processor Development for 5-axis CNC mill• Training Selection and Coordination for CAD-CAM and PLM• Mentor for 3D design, modeling, and 5-axis CNC Programming• Conducted weekly training and problem solving sessions with

engineering customers to disseminate best practices.• Software developed to monitor HPUX PLM Server uptime.

Occasionally an opportunity surfaces which seems too fun to be true. Saab asked me to come on board to work a design project for a new fastback coupe. This car was meant to compete with the AudiTT and others in this high performance class. Unfortunately due to GM’s 100% purchase of Saab in 2000 the project was cancelled, but it was quite an experience working in an English business environment with Swedish citizens.

My duties included:• Concept car design and feasibility study for fastback coupe• Design included largest engine ever used in a Saab automobile• Developmental studies for windscreen deployed airbags• Design enhancements for Saab 93• Software development for automatic programming of robotic spot

welders from 3D data.• Provided CAD-Programming instruction to Saab employees.

GM has several facilities in Mexico. When I was in Toluca, we had responsibility to mentor 200 engineers in design and manufacturing engineering practices, as well as CAD-CAM, and PLM data management. Additionally, we were involved in various design programs, and helped introduce software for 3-dimensional mockups (or prototype) assemblies allowing design verification before manufacturing tooled up for production. The work environment was English business with native Mexican citizens. My responsibilities included:• Consultant/mentor, for design and manufacturing engineering • CAD-CAM and PLM data management administration, and instruction• Performance analysis: system, network, workstation, software• PLM software testing, development of best practices• Large scale CAD database migration into PLM, involving 2 shifts of 20 engineers for two months• Software developed to assess CAD part file integrity in PLM database• Initiated EVA (Electronic Vehicle Assembly) design reviews (electronic digital mock-up), for very

large assemblies.• BIW exterior door trim, managed design activities for J-Car facias• Feasibility studies of side deployment airbags for Pontiac and Chevy J-Car. • Conducted weekly training and problem solving sessions with engineering customers to

Husky is quite a success story. The founder is a German immigrant that came to Canada during WWII. He started something like 8-10 different companies, all of which were short lived until Husky.

My first experience with Husky was under contract with EDS Canada during a large benchmark they were doing in order to select a new CAD-CAM vendor. Following that, they contracted with my company, Applied CAD Technology, Inc. to have me develop CAD-CAM software to automatically machine mould tooling cavities on the shop floor. Additionally, they asked me to help with the development of a new ICAM post processor for a very large Zayer milling center.
