次の文章を読んで,後の⑴~⑼の各問いに答えなさい。
解答番号は 1 ~ 10 。
In 2006 the solar system officially lost a planet. The 26th General
Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) downgraded the
status of Pluto from ‘Planet’ to ‘Dwarf Planet’ and the solar system was
left with only eight official planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Many people who would normally
not take any interest in the proceedings of an academic society like the
IAU were shocked and outraged by the decision and protested strongly
1 the ruling, saying that they had always 2 Pluto a
planet and would continue to do so. The controversy surrounding Pluto’s
classification is the latest in a long history of changes and re-
classifications concerning the structure and composition of the solar
system, dating back to ancient times.
From the Earth, ancient peoples watched the night sky and noticed
that although there were many hundreds of visible stars at night, a
small number appeared to move across the sky in a⑶
predictable way.
The word that English uses for these stars planet comes from the
ancient Greek word for ‘wanderer’ as these stars appear to wander
across the night sky. From the Earth, there are five planets that are
clearly visible with the naked eye. Mercury, the planet closest to the
sun, is very difficult to see if you live outside the equatorial zone of the
Earth. Because it is so close to the sun it 4 below the horizon
shortly after the sun sets. The second planet, Venus, is most often
visible at sunrise and sunset, appearing as a bright white object a little
above the horizon in the same direction as the sun. Because of its pure
white light, it was named after the Roman god of love and beauty.

The fourth planet, Mars, named after the Roman god of war, can be
seen clearly from the Earth for most of the year and appears as a
reddish star. The final two planets that are clearly visible from the
Earth, Jupiter and Saturn, look like very bright stars in the night sky.
The seventh planet, Uranus, is⑸
only just visible from the Earth, but it
is so faint and moves so slowly across the night sky that it was not
recognized as a planet until the 18th century. Following the recognition
of Uranus as a planet, it was noticed that the orbit was not quite
regular and astronomers predicted that the orbit of Uranus was being
affected by the gravity from another, yet undiscovered, planet.
Astronomers used Newton’s theory of gravitation to⑹
estimate the
location of this planet and began searching the corresponding section of
the night sky with telescopes. In 1846 the new planet was successfully
located by the French astronomer Urbain Le Verrier. As the first person
to identify the planet, Le Verrier had the right to choose its name and
decided that the planet should be called after the Roman god of the sea,
possibly due to its blue color. Most languages in the world today use
some variation of the word Neptune or some reference to the god of the
sea from other cultures when referring to this planet.
Astronomers continued to observe the slow-moving outer planets and
after many years they began to speculate that the orbits of these
planets were not as regular as they should be. It was thought that
there may be yet another planet, even further away from the sun,
whose gravity was affecting Uranus and Neptune. In 1930, after many
years of searching, the American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh
successfully located the body, and members of the Lowell observatory
voted to name the planet Pluto after the Roman god of the underworld.
The discovery of this new planet was a 7 and Walt Disney even
named a cartoon dog after the newly discovered planet. Most languages

200901E1_2use either the name Pluto or a name from their own culture that refers
to a mythical god of the underworld. Despite being labelled as a planet,
observations confirmed that Pluto was a very small icy world and was
actually much smaller than the main moons of Jupiter and Saturn and
also only about 70% of the diameter of the Earth’s moon.
For the rest of the twentieth century the standard view was that
the solar system consisted of nine planets and this was the version
taught in schools and memorized by students all over the world.
8 , towards the end of the twentieth century, increasingly
accurate telescopes revealed that the space beyond the orbit of Pluto was
not completely empty, but was filled with tens of thousands of small
bodies made of ice and rock. This area was named the Kuiper Belt.
While many of these objects are small and irregularly shaped, there are
a few which are nearly as large as Pluto. In 2005 astronomers
announced the discovery of a body which was approximately two thirds
the size of Pluto, named Makemake after a mythological figure from
Polynesian history. At around the same time astronomers also discovered
another small body, subsequently named Haumea, which has a mass
equivalent to one third of Pluto’s. It was becoming apparent that Pluto
was not a stand-alone world, but merely the largest of a massive
number of icy bodies orbiting far out from the sun. Thus, in 2006, Pluto
was officially reclassified as a dwarf planet and for the first time in
history, the number of planets in the solar system actually decreased.

次の文章を読んで,後の⑴~⑼の各問いに答えなさい。
解答番号は 1 ~ 10 。
Most people in the world are bilingual. Yet in countries like
Australia, where English is the dominant language, even now, in the era
of ‘multiculturalism’, English is often taken for granted and seen as the
‘normal’ means of communication. Those who speak only English know of
course that there are out there, in the world at large, people who speak
languages other than English, and that in Australia, too, there are
people who speak other languages in which they may feel more at home.
As Leitner notes: ‘Today’s Australia is one of the most multilingual
countries in the world, with well over 200 “Languages Other Than
English” . . . used in a variety ofⒶ
contexts by over two million
Australians’. In fact, as Leitner points out: ‘From early in Aboriginal
history to the present time, Australia has been a host to many
languages’. Ⓑ , there is still in this country little understanding
of what it means to live with two (or more) languages rather than one;
or what it means to be a native speaker of another language in a
country where English alone is the shared medium of communication.
How can people living their lives exclusively through English
imagine what it means to live between different languages? Having no
experience of such a condition themselves, the only way they can learn
about it is through the experience of others.
Australia is a country rich in languages and rich in bilingual
experience. To date, however, this experience has not been widely shared
and a monolingual perspective on the worldⒸ
dominates the country’s
public discourse as well as the private thinking of most Anglo
Australians. Bilingual experience is a resource that until now has hardly

been tapped in Australia. For the failure to tap this hidden wealth the
country is paying a price in a variety of ways, most evidently in
miscommunication and disharmony in the workplace, but also in many
other walks of life.
A monolingual perspective on the world is also a monocultural one.
Although Australia prides itself on being multicultural, there is actually
little awareness of what it means to live between cultures. There is also
little awareness of how difficult intercultural communication really is
and how much there is for everyone to learn about other cultural
perspectives before effective intercultural communication Ⓓ . It is
not enough to be tolerant, to have good will, to be curious about other
people’s folk dances, costumes and culinary traditions.
The key to cross-cultural understanding is language. If the general
level of such understanding in Australia is to rise, Australians need to
develop more ofⒺ
an insight into what it means not to feel at home in
English in a country where English is both the only official language
and the only shared lingua franca. They also need to gain a sense of
how social conflict is often due to miscommunication that has its source
in people’s diverse language backgrounds. Shared access to English is
not sufficient to overcome such problems in social interaction.
Monolingualism limits people’s understanding of the world and of
human life in more than one way. It brings about an unconscious
absolutisation of the perspective on the world suggested by one’s native
language. It is only exposure to other perspectives (those suggested by
other languages) which shows us that what we, as native speakers of
one language, instinctively take for reality is in factⒻ
a particular
interpretation of reality.
In a sense, living with languages is like living with other people.
Just as our relationships with people shape us and make us who we

200901E2_10are, so, too, do our relationships with languages. If a person lives his or
her life through one language, this person, too, is shaped to some extent
by that language but Ⓖ a comparative perspective they are
unlikely to be aware of it. By contrast, a person moving between
languages can be aware of having a relationship with each of them a
different one in each case and of being shaped by these relationships.
They can also be aware that they can make choices in relation to their
languages; using them in different ways and in different contexts,
identifying them to different degrees, responding to them emotionally in
different ways, and so on. There is a world of human experience which
is closed to speakers of only one language unless and until they share
something of it through bilinguals’ autobiographical testimonies.
Until recently, it was widely assumed in both scholarly literature
and popular wisdom that valid knowledge can come only from objective
study ofⒽ
external reality. Because of this assumption, some subjects of
profound human interest and of great social importance could not be
explored in depth and discussed in wide-reaching societal conversation.
As a result, some knowledge vital to society especially to a
‘multicultural’ one was passed over in silence.

次の文章を読んで,後の⑴~⑽の各問いに答えなさい。
解答番号は 1 ~ 11 。
As humans develop and grow older they go through a sequence of
physical and developmental stages. Young babies gradually learn how to
walk and talk. Teenagers grow rapidly and develop adult body
characteristics. Older people develop wrinkles, get gray hair and lose
muscle mass. These physical changes are quite obvious and we can
usually make a pretty good judgement of someone’s age just by looking
at them.
1 these physical changes, there are also mental changes that
take place throughout a person’s life. The American psychologist Erik
Erikson developed a theory about the mental and social development
that humans go through as they grow older. In each stage of life, people
face a new challenge in their mental and social development. Individuals
proceed through the stages in a relatively fixed order, but may or may
not be successful in meeting the challenges of each stage.
For example, infants and young children are very 2 on their
parents and other caregivers. If the care they receive is⑶
consistent and
supportive, they develop feelings of trust and optimism that they can
carry with them through their lives. If, however, their early experiences
are negative, they may be suspicious and mistrustful in the future.
Another very important stage is the adolescent stage which happens
in the teenage years. During this stage, young people are not so reliant
on their parents for support and often seek independence and autonomy.
When they were younger, their parents usually decided things like what
clothes they wore, what time they went to bed and so on. In their
desire to 4 of their lives and create their own identity, teenagers

often rebel against the rules of parents and school and create a sense of
identity by such things as becoming fans of a certain popular music
genre or dressing according to a popular fashion trend. Adolescence is a
time for experimentation and 5 for one’s identity and this may
mean dyeing your hair blue and wearing extreme makeup. Failure at
this stage can lead to lack of self-confidence and feelings of alienation.
Once the identity development stage is passed, the next stage is the
period of young adulthood and this is characterized by a focus on
building relationships with others. People choose their friends more
carefully. In the early childhood years, just sitting next to someone at
school or liking the same music was enough of a basis for friendship.
During the years of early adulthood, people move past these shallow
reasons and form lasting friendships with others. People also start to
develop romantic relationships with others and move past simple ideas
of someone being ‘cool’ or ‘pretty’. Relationships with parents may also
need to be renewed as people move away from home. The young adult’s
desire to be free and independent can leave parents feeling unwanted.
The son or daughter is now an adult and needs to be⑹
treated as such
by their parents and both sides have to understand this new system of
relationships.
After developing mature and lasting relationships, people move on to
the next stage of social and psychological development. This stage, which
occurs in adulthood, is when people⑺
shift focus away from themselves
and start to focus on others. People apply themselves to their jobs and
careers. They may be in positions of responsibility and have to mentor
younger, less experienced people in the workplace. They may also
become parents themselves and they will need to focus on the needs of
their young children instead of simply thinking about themselves and
their own desires. Things that once seemed important to them like

something for the benefit of others and performing actions that will have
long-lasting results beyond their own lifetime.
The final stage⑻
proposed by Erikson was the satisfaction of late
adulthood and old age. This is a time when people look back on their
lives, their accomplishments, their relationships with others and try to
make sense of everything. Failure to succeed in the earlier stages may
result in unhappiness and feelings of regret. But, if the earlier stages
were completed successfully, this time may be a time of reflection,
satisfaction and wisdom.
The underlying pattern in this system of development is the change
of focus of the self. The earliest, childhood stages see the person as
closely connected to and reliant on their parents and caregivers. The
focus changes during adolescence and people in this stage focus
intensively on themselves, their own identity, their own wants. This may
look to outsiders like selfishness, but it is a natural stage towards
becoming an adult. The relationship stage sees the focus of attention
divided between the self and the other people in your life. The
mentoring stage sees the reduction in self-focus and the redirection of
focus outwards towards others, and the last, reflective stage sees the
individual take an overview of their life and place in society.
9 stage you are going through, there are certain things that
you can expect. From the children who depend entirely on their parents
and teachers for guidance and support, to the teenager who is hugely
concerned with image and identity, to the adults who devote their time
and energies to their jobs and families, all people are going through
predictable life stages. Understanding what stage you are at can help
you make sense of your life.

次の文章を読んで,後の⑴~⑼の各問いに答えなさい。
解答番号は 1 ~ 10 。
In restaurants, as elsewhere, the English may moan and grumble to
each other about poor service or bad food, but our inhibitions, our social
dis-ease, make it difficult for us to complain directly to the staff. We
have three very different ways of dealing with such situations, all more
or less equally ineffective and unsatisfying.
The Silent Complaint
Most English people, faced with unappetising or even inedible food,
are too embarrassed to complain at all. Complaining would be ‘making a
scene’, ‘making a fuss’ or ‘drawing attention to oneself’ in public all
forbidden by the unwritten rules. It would involve aⒶ
confrontation, an
emotional engagement with another human being, which is unpleasant
and uncomfortable and to be avoided if Ⓑ . English customers
may moan indignantly to their companions, push the offending food to
the side of their plate and pull disgusted faces at each other, but when
the waiter asks if everything is all right they smile politely, avoiding
eye contact, and mutter, ‘Yes, fine, thanks.’ Standing in a slow queue at
a pub or café food counter, they sigh heavily, fold their arms, tap their
feet and look pointedly at their watches, but never actually complain.
They will not go back to that establishment, and will tell all their
friends how awful it is, but the poor publican or restaurateur will never
even know that there was anythingⒸ
amiss.
The Apologetic Complaint
Some slightly braver souls will use method number two: the

apologetic complaint, an English specialty. ‘Excuse me, I’m terribly sorry,
um, but, er, this soup seems to be rather, well, not very hot a bit
cold, really . . .’ ‘Sorry to be a Ⓓ , but, um, I ordered the steak
and this looks like, er, well, fish . . .’ ‘Sorry, but do you think we could
order soon? [this after a twenty-minute wait with no sign of any service]
It’s just that we’re in a bit of a hurry, sorry.’ Sometimes these
complaints are so hesitant andⒺ
timid, so oblique, and so carefully
disguised as apologies, that the staff could be forgiven for failing to
grasp the fact that the customers are dissatisfied. ‘They look at the floor
and mumble, as though they have done something wrong!’ an
experienced waiter told me.
As well as apologising for complaining, we also tend to apologise for
making perfectly reasonable requests: ‘Oh, excuse me, sorry, but could
we possibly have some salt?’ ‘Sorry, but could we have the bill now
please?’ and even for spending money: ‘Sorry, could we have another
bottle of this, please?’ I am guilty of all of these, and I always feel
obliged to apologise when I haven’t eaten much of my meal: ‘Sorry, it
was lovely, really, I’m just not very hungry’.
The Loud, Aggressive, Obnoxious Complaint
Finally, there is, as usual, the other side of the social dis-ease coin
English complaint-technique number three: the loud,Ⓕ
aggressive,
obnoxious complaint. The red-faced, blustering, rude, self-important
customer who has worked himself into a state of indignation Ⓖ
some minor mistake or, occasionally, the patient customer who
eventually explodes in genuine frustration at being kept waiting hours
for disgusting food.
It is often said that English waiters and other service staff are
surly, lazy and incompetent. While there may be some truth in these

200902E2_10accusations we lack the professionalism and servility of some cultures,
and cannot bring ourselves to adopt the gushing over-friendliness of
others one should look at theⒽ
nonsense English servers have to put
up with before casting stones. Our inept complaints alone would try the
patience of a saint, and our silent ones require an understanding of non-
verbal behaviour that would tax many psychologists, particularly if they
had to fry chips or carry plates at the same time.
They may seem very different, but the silent or apologetic complaint
and the aggressive-obnoxious one are closely related. The symptoms of
the English social dis-ease involve opposite extremes: when we feel
uncomfortable or embarrassed in social situations, we become either
over-polite and awkwardly restrained, or loud, loutish, aggressive and
insufferable.
