  • IB Diploma curriculum changesFirst teaching: 2019First assessment: 2021

    Mathematics

What are the changes being made to the Maths curriculum?

There will be two different Maths courses in the IB Diploma, Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI), each offered at Standard Level and Higher Level. These replace the existing framework of Maths SL, HL, Math Studies and Further Maths.

What is the difference between the courses?

Analysis and Approaches is closer to the existing IB Maths courses and Maths courses in other curricula. Applications and Interpretation SL is most similar to Mathematical Studies (which was the easiest Maths course in the existing syllabus) and is designed to cater to candidates who would previously have chosen Mathematical Studies, as well as to those with an interest in solving mathematical problems in practical contexts.

Will my choice affect my university application?

University admissions have different requirements in Maths. Students who want to pursue a university course with a substantial mathematical element should consider taking Analysis and Approaches. Some universities have indicated that they will not accept Applications and Interpretation HL as equivalent to the existing Mathematics HL.

So which course should I choose?

University admissions usually prefer traditional courses. Analysis and Approaches is more similar to existing Maths courses. But if you are not that strong in Maths, or intend to take a university course in unrelated fields, Applications and Interpretation SL is a viable choice.

    English A / Chinese A:Language & Literature / Literature

Why has there been a syllabus change?

The IBDP curriculum undergoes a 7-year cycle of syllabus changes to keep it as factually accurate as possible, as well as to make teaching and learning more flexible for global issues. The main purpose of the Language A syllabus changes is to make the Language & Literature and Literature syllabi more similar.

    New

What are the main syllabus changes?

Aside from making the Language & Literature and Literature syllabi more similar, there will be significant changes in the assessment components. For the internal assessment, the Individual Oral Commentary (IOC) and Further Oral Activity (FOA) will be changed to the Individual Oral Assessment (IOA) which will be a mix of the two.

What will be the new format of Paper 1?

The format of Paper 1 will be changed for both SL and HL. However, Paper 2 will still be similar to the current syllabus. For Paper 1 HL, there will no longer be a comparative analysis on two different texts, only a commentary on one. For Paper 1 SL, textual analysis will not only include prose or poetry, but rather any text type covered in the syllabus.

HL Chemistry and Physics Starting from the 2019 May session, the total marks for Paper 2 of the HL exam changed from 95 to 90 marks. This is because of an increase in the level of difficulty of the papers in the new curriculum (2016) compared to the old curriculum, as well as the fact that all questions need to be answered instead of there being a choice of questions.
