The working area is located in the Sierra de Burete (Murcia Region) where has been selected an almond orchard in organic management
under different practices, and also a forest area (F). Through a sampling (rings of 5 x 5 cm, with unaltered samples) are curves of water
holding capacity on the basis of soil saturated in laboratory tested the following pressures: 0; 0.1; 0.5; 1; 10 to 15 atm. For high pressures
of 10-15 atm sample is altered, and saturated pastes are made. They are also determined the following indicators of physical quality:
available water, bulk density, air capacity (AC), macroporosity (MAC), relative field capacity (RFC) and total porosity. As general objective to
assess the effect of the use of the land (agriculture and forestry), and how different sustainable management practices (reduced tillage with
plus green manure and no tillage: RTG and NT) affect soil water holding capacity in two depths (0-5 and 5-10 cm). In terms of the results
statistically significant differences are found between treatments as water holding capacity, bulk density and air capacity. There are no
statistically significant differences between treatments in terms of available water or in relative field capacity. Changes in depth, are the
macroporosity and total porosity, with statistically significant differences between the treatments studied. As conclusions, we can say that
the reference soil (F) has the best physical quality. As for managements it should be noted that RTG present values quite close to F,
pointing at bulk density. NT management in this work is that presents the worst results (lower values in the water holding capacity, higher
bulk density and lowest total porosity). In this type of agro-ecosystems it looks like reduced tillage is beneficial because it provides
aeration and prevents the bulk density of the soil to increase. As direct involvement indicate that if a soil can hold more water (in an area
where water is the limiting factor), the vegetation may be favoured.
