In spectacular riotous moves, young people brave the winter cold and their evil spirits by furiously cracking large sticks of bamboo by a bonfire. One of its highlights is the Shinto palanquin holding a giant Kutani ceramic plate designed by Ashiro Tatsuo, one of Japan’ s living national treasures. Second Saturday and Sunday of September Praying for abundant crops and prosperous industries, this is Yamanoshita Shrine’ s annual festival. Dedicated to the life and work of Fukata Kyuya, a native from Daishoji and beloved author of the best-seller “100 famous mountains of Japan”, this nice house from the Meiji period also serves as an exchange space for mountain and great nature enthusiasts. This pavilion built on the banks of the river was used as a resting place for the Daishoji clan lords. It is often said that they would enjoy fishing from throughout the windows or have a relaxing time in there while having tea.
