Recently, owls have become more popular as pets. Some people think that this may be due to the success of the Harry Potter movies and Harry’s beautiful Snowy Owl, Hedwig. But, despite their popularity, many people do not know so much about these loved and interesting birds.

There are 216 different types of owls in the world, the largest of which is the Eagle Owl which can have wings 1.5 metres wide. The smallest is the Elf Owl which are usually around 13 centimetres tall and about as heavy as a golf ball! Owls are of course also famous for being able to turn their heads almost all the way around and this is because they have 14 neck bones while humans only have 7.

Owls are ‘birds of prey’ which means they hunt and eat other smaller animals such as mice, fish, insects and even birds. This is why owls have special feathers so they are able to fly without making much noise. Hunting is also the reason why they have large eyes on the front of their heads, which helps owls to see well in the dark. Most of the animals owls like to eat are much easier to find at night.

Another reason that owls are good hunters is that their feathers are often the same colors as the things around them in the places they live. For example, the white feathers of the Snowy Owl help it hide in the snow of the cold places it lives in. The Tawny Owl lives in woods and forest areas and it’s feathers are different shades of brown.

One last important fact about owls is that most owls prefer to live and hunt by themselves. They are not flock birds that live in large groups, like parrots for example. This, along with the fact that they need a lot of space to fly in and a lot of food, means that they are actually not very friendly pets!

There are many different kinds of events and festivals around the world, some of which can

seem quite strange at first. One example is the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling. This is a set of

races that are held in Gloucestershire, England every spring.

The races take place on a very steep hill, which means it is really difficult to climb, but the

runners have to go down the hill. The people in the races are trying to catch a large, round

cheese that is rolled down the hill before them. The cheese weighs 3.6 kilograms, so it rolls very

fast! It’s actually not possible for any of the runners to catch the cheese, so the winner is simply

the first runner to reach the bottom of the hill. Most runners fall over and end up rolling quickly

down the hill. There are people called catchers who wait on the hill and try to stop anyone who

is rolling too fast! Every year there are many injuries, broken bones and trips to the hospital,

but people still love taking part in the races. In fact, the people of Gloucestershire have been

holding the event for more than 200 years.

Now the event is quite well-known around the world and visitors from many countries travel

to take part in the races. It is likely that the event will continue for many years to come!
