Dalton’s atomic theory summarized the nature of matter as known in 1808

1) An element is composed of extremely small individual particlescalled atoms.

2) All atoms of a given element have identical properties, which differfrom those of other elements.

3) Atoms cannot be created, destroyed, or transformed into atoms ofanother element.

4) Compounds are formed when atoms of different elementscombine with each other in small whole-number ratios.

5) The relative numbers and kinds of atoms are constant in a givencompound.

B2. The Nuclear ModelB2. The Nuclear Model

An atom is the smallest particle of an element thatmaintains its chemical identity through all chemical andphysical changes.

Fundamental particles are the basic building blocks of atoms, they consist of electrons, protons, and neutrons.

Atomic number

32

Atomic number (Z) is defined as the number of protons inthe nucleus.

A molecule is the smallest particle of an element orcompound that can have a stable independent existence.
