Get your workout attire ready – Chong Pang is set to become a better place for physical activities thanks to the upcoming Sports Integrated Park. It will be easier for residents to keep fit through the variety of sports amenities at the integrated park, such as a sheltered multi-purpose game court and an adventure playground. KEBUN BARU: REJUVENATION OF MAYFLOWER MALL 哥本峇鲁: 翻新美华商城

Mayflower Mall is set to become Kebun Baru’s latest community space after being given a facelift. World-renowned designers Ms Cheng Ming and Mr Lai Pak Hung, who were previously involved in the design of Shanghai’s famous Xintiandi recreation district, are being consulted on the upgrading of the mall.

Once completed, the mall will feature a community plaza leading towards Mayflower Market. Lighting will also be enhanced to make the plaza more welcoming, especially at night. Lines of trees will offer welcome shade to pedestrians in the day.

649 BAGS OF JOYFOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEARThe joy of Christmas came a few days early for over 600 underprivileged children. A total of 649 schoolbags, donated by Yishun residents and other donors, were gifted to them.

On 22 December 2018, Wisteria Mall held a symbolic presentation ceremony at the mall. The 649 schoolbags were distributed to the beneficiaries at a later date.

Many of the recipients were excited at the thought of carrying new schoolbags this year. A 12-year-old boy was elated with the gift. “My current one looks old as I’ve been using it for two to three years. I’m looking forward to using the new bag!” he beamed.

As for another 12-year-old, she said she felt excited to receive a new item to usher in the new year. “I think using new things in the new year brings good luck!” she said.

Both kids also queued up with their peers to receive goodie bags from Nee Soon South MP Er Dr Lee Bee Wah. In her speech earlier, she gestured that her doors were always open to schoolchildren who need help. “I want to see all of you work hard. If you need any help, please come and see me. I’m happy to help students in particular. Good luck and all the best for the new school year,” said Ms Lee.

Wisteria Mall partnered with Singapore Children's Society, MWS Family Service Centre - Yishun by Methodist Welfare Services, Chinese Development Assistance Council, and Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society to support this initiative.

The Nail Status Despite being well-known for its manicure services, this 15-year-old brand has transitioned into a one-stop shop proffering a variety of beauty services. With the opening of its third branch in Wisteria, founder Ms Christine Lee, 36, said they offer eyebrow embroidery, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal, and eyelash extensions, among many others. "We hope more people will know us as a beauty one-stop shop offering convenience, where they can get all their essential beauty treatments and services under one roof," she said.

Bread Fresh Famous for their French loaves, this halal bakery opens its first branch in the north. Baker Mr Tan Chee Sui, 32, said customers usually favour their baked goods due to the promotional prices and wide variety. "They also like going for our walnut cranberry bread and walnut rye bread. These are healthier choices, as they contain less sugar and butter," he said.

LIVING WITH CANCER: YOU'RE NEVER ALONE

When Madam Selina Salleh was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, she immediately asked the doctor not to reveal her cancer stage. The 53-year-old only wanted to know what she could do to keep herself going. Despite the harrowing diagnosis, the mother of four was determined to receive treatment as soon as possible.

Thanks to her tenacity, Madam Selina survived over 30 cycles of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She was finally given the all-clear by her doctor in late 2018. While grateful for her family as her source of strength, Madam Selina’s battle with cancer taught her one thing – only people who have been through cancer will understand the journey.

“You can sympathise with a cancer patient, but it’s different from empathising because cancer survivors understand the stages you go through instead of just saying comforting words like ‘stay strong’,” she said.

Madam Selina then found her calling as a “Health Kaki” (Health Companion) under Singapore’s first constituency-based cancer support and awareness movement Never Alone, launched on 27 January 2019. Together with 54 other “Health Kakis” in Nee Soon GRC, Madam Selina has been trained in basic cancer-related information and counselling skills.

Two cancer resource centres were launched under this movement – one at Block 839 Yishun Street 81, and another at Kebun Baru Community Club. At the centres, residents may attend awareness talks, as well as find more information about cancer and a directory of organisations which support cancer patients and their families.

In his launching speech, Nee Soon GRC MP Minister K Shanmugam said one in every five Singaporeans will go through cancer at some point in their lives. "It will make a difference for them to have the support from someone who has been through a similar journey. I thank all our 'Health Kakis' for stepping forward to bravely share the challenges they faced, and to be that friend to someone else experiencing cancer,” he said.

Apabila Puan Selina Salleh didiagnosis menghidap barah payudara pada tahun 2016, ibu kepada empat orang anak ini bertekad untuk mendapatkan rawatan secepat mungkin. Selepas menjalani lebih daripada 30 sesi kemoterapi dan radioterapi, beliau akhirnya disahkan bebas daripada barah oleh doktornya pada lewat 2018.

Walaupun beliau berterima kasih kepada keluarganya yang merupakan sumber kekuatannya, pengalaman Puan Selina bertarung dengan barah telah mengajar beliau satu perkara – hanya mereka yang pernah diserang penyakit ini memahami cabaran dan dugaan yang dihadapi.

Puan Selina kemudiannya terpanggil untuk menjadi seorang "Health Kaki” (Teman Kesihatan) di bawah Never Alone, sebuah gerakan yang berusaha memberi sokongan kepada pesakit barah dan meningkatkan kesedaran tentang penyakit ini. Gerakan yang berpusat dalam kawasan undi ini merupakan yang pertama seumpamanya di Singapura. Ia telah dilancarkan pada 27 Januari 2019.

This stall wins over more than 200 palates a day with its signature golden brown fried radish cakes topped with generous servings of chai poh (preserved radish). The carrot cake’s layers of crispy omelette, and the aroma of garlic, eggs, and chai poh will tantalise your sense of sight and smell before conquering your heart with every bite.

Taking the helm from his parents – the original stall owners – is Mr Sim Yih Hao, 40, a former clarinet player with the Singapore Armed Forces Band. “I re-season and refry the factory-made radish cakes to make them flavourful. The popularity of our carrot cake convinces me that I can still continue to do this even when I am in my 60s,” he said with a smile.

The neighbouring stall, which sells fishball noodles for just $2.50, enjoys brisk business. Springy noodles, coupled with bouncy fish balls, are the mainstay here. The mushroom minced meat noodles and laksa (rice noodles served in spicy soup), priced at $3 each, are also popular choices. Stall assistant Ms Zhang Wei, 40, revealed that she gives secondary school students a slightly bigger serving of noodles as they are “still growing”.

“Back in my home country [China], we are used to having saltier and oily food due to the cold climate. The owner of the neighbouring stall, Madam Wye [Mr Sim Yih Hao’s mother], helped me adapt my style of cooking to suit Singaporeans’ penchant for healthy food. I brew my soup using bones and soy beans. Customers commented that they don’t feel thirsty after drinking the soup,” she said.

Early risers rushing to work can order a bowl of piping hot wanton (shrimp or meat dumpling) noodles as early as 4.30am, thanks to husband-and-wife pair Mr Er Boon Hua, 66, and Madam Koh Kioh Hiok, 62, who opened their stall in 1989. Business is so good that the duo usually sells their last bowl of noodles by 10am.

Besides a generous serving of leafy cai xin (Chinese flowering cabbage), the spicy wanton noodles boast of tender barbecued pork, also known as char siew, and aromatic pork dumplings. “I use fresh ingredients and handmade sauces. My broth is prepared using pork bones, chicken meat, ikan bilis (dried anchovies) and soy beans,” Madam Koh said.

Giving back to society is important for Mr Ching Tai Chon, 39. Born in Malaysia, he came to Singapore to work as a baker for 20 years before becoming a hawker selling chicken rice.

“Our price has not changed since I opened this outlet in 2016. I understand that life is challenging for some people. I myself have experienced similar situations. My customers, which include school children, can enjoy a hearty meal of chicken rice at just $2,” he asserted.

The stall’s fragrant blend of chicken rice, tender chicken, and cucumbers is certainly the top choice among busy and hungry commuters. “I can sell around 500 plates a day,” Mr Ching added.

Those well-versed in Chinese history will know that the origin of handmade noodles dates back to the Three Kingdoms era. Legend has it that General Zhang Fei discovered that throwing dough on a quartzite board until it hardened, made for noodles that are both filling and delicious. His hunger pangs were quelled after consuming just two bowls of such noodles.

Hawker assistant Mr Ong Ah Hoon, 53, shared that people are now more accustomed to the taste of such noodles compared to when he first began working at the stall in 1987. His brother, Mr Ong Kim Huat, is the stall owner.

“I enhance the taste of noodles by adding eggs to make them chewier,” the assistant related. A no-frills version with vegetables, pork, and an egg costs $2.50. The deluxe version, which includes big prawns, will set you back only $3.

With the aromatic scent of coffee greeting visitors at the entrance, it is easy to mistake GoodLife!@Yishun for a charming café. It is in fact, a seniors’ and caregivers’ centre nestled in a cosy nook near Khatib MRT.

Managed by voluntary welfare organisation Montfort Care, the centre gives seniors and caregivers a chance to leave their stress at the door and enjoy wellness services such as aromatherapy and hand massages. Located at Block 838 Yishun Street 81, the centre is the first in Singapore to offer such services to this targeted group of people.

Mr Low Kok Wai, 55, is looking forward to visiting the centre frequently with his 92-year-old father. “It's a welcome space where the elderly like my father, and caregivers like me, can socialise and relax together, have a kopi. We're hoping to explore other activities here in the future,” said Mr Low.

Meanwhile, Madam Kalsom Abdullah, 61, has signed up to be a volunteer at the centre. “I was a caregiver to my sick husband for almost 10 years before he passed away in 2017. I understand what patients and caregivers go through, and I look forward to sharing my experience with them here,” she said.

The activities the centre will hold include a Community Chef Programme, caregiver support groups, dementia and mental health screenings, as well as active ageing and befriending programmes.

Nee Soon GRC MP Minister K Shanmugam, who is also Minister for Home Affairs and Law, was present to officiate the centre’s opening on 25 November 2018. He was accompanied by Nee Soon South MP Er Dr Lee Bee Wah.

The centre is one of the health-related facilities added to Nee Soon South in recent years. In her speech at the event, Ms Lee outlined the other facilities such as a dialysis centre, counselling centre and designated smoking points, among others. She concluded: “Now I can proudly say that residents can get healthy and stay healthy right at their doorstep. I will continue to deepen my support for your health.”

除了快乐中心以外，义顺南近年也设立了其它有益居民健康的设施，如洗肾中心、辅导中心、指定吸烟点等等。对此，李美花说：“现在，居民不用离开义顺南，就能保持身心健康。我会继续为居民的健康和幸福而努力。”

Last Christmas, 50 needy families got some tender loving care in the form of LoveCare packages from Nee Soon Town Council.

These packages contained useful household items such as rice cookers, lunch boxes, charging cables, and merchandise featuring our beloved mascots Nanas and Squish.

This was all made possible thanks to residents who helped spread the love during the #ChristmasinNeeSoon campaign. All they needed to do was upload photos of themselves with the Christmas tree outside our main office. We did the rest by matching a LoveCare package to a needy family based on the number of entries.

Town council community engagement manager Ms Edna Tan, who organised the distribution of packages, said the families were delighted and surprised by the gesture. "They appreciated the help from us," she said. The families collected their care packages from our offices after being informed of their eligibility, while those who could not make the trip to our office had the packages delivered to their doorstep.

Ms Tan also thanked Nee Soon GRC MPs for posting photos of themselves with the Christmas tree and spreading word of the campaign on social media. "Our vision has always been Home With A Heart, and to be an inclusive town council. We thought this initiative would be a good start to our CSR [corporate social responsibility] activities," she shared.

PRESERVINGCHYE KAY’SLEGACYThe dearth of historical records on Chye Kay Village, and his parents’ lack of memories of the village due to their dementia, prompted Mr Sunny Ng Yeow Tiam, 58, to embark on a mission to plug this gap in Nee Soon Village history. Mr Ng’s findings, which included precious contributions from past alumni (including himself) of Lee Cheng Public School, resulted in a 100-page book entitled “Retracing Footsteps Home - Chye Kay Village”. The book was published in October 2018.

“I also wanted to leave something for my children [so they can] trace their family heritage,” Mr Ng said.

THE ORIGIN OF CHYE KAY VILLAGEBefore 1819, Chye Kay Village was just a forest. The arrival of Teochew pioneer Mr Tan Chye Kay, who cleared the forest to set up rubber plantations, meant settlers in the area could be gainfully employed as rubber tappers. This led many of them to settle down there permanently. Chye Kay Road and Chye Kay Village were named after Mr Tan in 1954 in honour of his contributions.

FLOURISHING PLANTATIONS AND FARMSVillagers also grew pineapples due to their comparatively shorter life cycle. In 1938, the British government cleared thousands of acres of land to introduce agriculture and livestock farming. These practices gave way to orchid cultivation and aquaculture in the 1960s and 1970s. Bounded by Sungei Simpang Kiri and Sungei Khatib Bongsu, Chye Kay Village was home to 180 residents during that period.

THE BEGINNINGSMr Ng recounted that the first Chinese school was started by Mr Tan Soo Chuan. “At first, it was a home school. Later he garnered the support of fellow villagers and founded Lee Cheng Public School in the 1930s. As enrolment increased, the Lee Teck Public School was built using donations by residents here. Kwang Teck School was also another school constructed by the Ngee Ann Kongsi. Over the years, Chye Kay Village nurtured national paddlers, now-retired principal Mr Ngoh Choon Ho, and Mediacorp artistes Chen Xiuhuan and Lin Meijiao,” said Mr Ng.

UNFADING MEMORIES AND DIE-HARD HABITSBorn in 1960 at Chye Kay Village, Mr Ng’s most vivid recollections of kampung life were of trapping fish at Sungei Khatib Bongsu, playing with spiders, enjoying acrobatic performances at the Tai Thean Kew Circus, and watching television programmes at the Chye Kay Village Community Centre.

The picturesque landscape of the kampung also ignited Mr Ng’s passion in drawing. This passion blossomed into an illustrious career as a creative director, which saw him taking the helm for kampung-themed exhibits.

THE ENDURING KAMPUNG SPIRIT Living in a kampung has impacted his values and perceptions. “We looked out for one another, and shared food, durians, and harvested vegetables. When it rained, we rushed to help one another retrieve clothes,” Mr Ng said.

Mr Ng observed that the community spirit has since evolved to take on a digital dimension. It was only through the internet and WhatsApp that he managed to connect past alumni of Lee Cheng Public School, despite not connecting with them for 40 years.

“Of course, the cyber world can never replace face-to-face communication. Every community bond starts with a ‘hello’. That’s the most basic form of human interaction,” he concluded.

PLANTING NATIONAL LEGACIES

Residents are all smiles after planting Handkerchief trees together with Prof Faishal.

Planting Handkerchief trees (Maniltoa browneoides) at Nee Soon Central took on a nation-building significance at Block 645 Yishun Street 61 on the morning of 1 December 2018.

“The tree planting tradition was started by the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, and we continue to uphold this tradition because we believe in it. The Handkerchief trees are not owned by anybody; these are owned by every one of us. Just like we take care of these trees, we must take care of Singapore, so that our future generation can contribute to building the nation,” MP for Nee Soon GRC Assoc Prof Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim espoused.

Known for their leaves that resemble pinched handkerchiefs, these Handkerchief trees can grow up to 25 metres tall. Resident Ms Tan Bee Kiow, 60, agreed that everyone is responsible for taking care of the trees. Another nature lover, Ms Lim Cheng Goh, 75, added: “I like to exercise in places where there are lots of trees. I will definitely keep a lookout for the health of the trees and alert the Town Council if there are any issues.”

TRUST ME,I’M A MEDICALSOCIAL WORKERDo you know that medical social workers make a lasting impact

on people’s lives by giving them support during distressing situations? They may not be doctors or nurses, but their role

in the healthcare industry is akin to a needle weaving pieces of fabric together to form a complete quilt. These allied health professionals offer financial, emotional, and social support during a patient’s recovery and, sometimes, ultimate despair.

More than just “volunteers” “A lot of people think we are volunteers,” shared Ms Ismawanty Abdul Razak, a senior medical social worker at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. “They think we aren’t paid. Not many know that this is a real profession.” May 2019 would mark her sixth year in this profession, yet, the 29-year-old still scours for an educated answer to simple questions such as, “You volunteer ah? You makan how? (How do you make a living?)”

“It is useful for people to know the different aspects of our career. It is our job to offer support, but other than coordinating financial assistance plans, we journey together with our patients who need social and emotional help, especially those who are newly diagnosed,” said Ms Ismawanty.

This means holding their hands and counselling them through their journey of acceptance and recovery. “Some may come in to collect their medical results, not knowing their illness is going to be a serious one. Despite sitting through [this type of] diagnosis with a doctor, sometimes they have no capacity to fully process their feelings. Others refuse to talk to their family members for fear of burdening them. That is where we come in by offering support to help them cope,” she said.

The scope of her multifaceted social work includes assessing a patient’s strength and resilience, mediating family conflicts, educating families, and linking patients and caregivers to community resources, among others.

Ms Ismawanty revealed that another critical part of her role is to ensure the continuity of care for discharged patients, especially for patients whose functional status have been affected. “We connect them with resources available in their [housing] area, and educate them on policies that will impact or help them,” she said.

Burnouts are part of the job Having worked in a senior position for more than a year, Ms Ismawanty has progressed from handling simple cases, to taking on more complex ones. “I’m looking into trauma and violence cases now. Even suicide,” she said. Though the job is challenging, learning from other supportive senior officers has proved to be an important source of strength.

Apart from empathising with and supporting people from all walks of life, the mother of one found that she needed to sharpen her time management skills to balance between family and work responsibilities. As the job can be emotionally draining, she added that she used to

have the tendency to emotionally disconnect from others, especially after dealing with many cases in a day. Thankfully, she found her way out of the woods by taking short breaks to refresh her mind.

There is inspiration in nobility Reminding herself of why she embarked on this career is an important motivation for Ms Ismawanty. The nobility of social work first interested her when she was a child. Ms Ismawanty’s father started his career in the civil service as a probation officer and subsequently as a supervisor of underprivileged children’s homes. His rich experiences inspired her, and ignited her passion and desire to serve and help others. “He has always been my inspiration,” she said.

It also helps that Ms Ismawanty sees herself as a collector of inspiring and memorable stories. “The opportunity to witness a patient’s journey from their initial vulnerable stages, to empowering them with resources and counselling, to seeing them on their feet again despite their disabilities; I collect these stories of resilience because they inspire me to celebrate small successes. That’s why our job is important. What we offer to patients stays with them for the rest of their lives. It is empowering, both to me, and hopefully, to them too,” she said.

Adakah anda tahu bahawa pekerja sosial perubatan membawa kesan yang berpanjangan dalam kehidupan orang ramai, dengan memberikan sokongan kepada mereka ketika berada dalam

keadaan yang membimbangkan? Walaupun mereka bukan doktor atau jururawat, tetapi peranan mereka dalam industri penjagaan kesihatan boleh diibaratkan seperti sebatang jarum yang menenun helaian fabrik untuk menjadi selimut yang lengkap. Para profesional kesihatan bersekutu ini menawarkan sokongan kewangan, emosi, dan sosial ketika dalam proses pemulihan pesakit, dan kadang-kadang, dalam keadaan yang putus asa sudahnya.

Bukan sekadar "sukarelawan" "Banyak orang menganggap kami adalah sukarelawan," ujar Cik Ismawanty Abdul Razak, seorang pekerja sosial perubatan kanan di Hospital Khoo Teck Puat. "Mereka fikir kami tidak dibayar gaji. Tidak ramai yang tahu bahawa ini adalah pekerjaan yang nyata." Bulan Mei 2019 akan menandakan tahun keenam Cik Ismawanty berkecimpung dalam bidang ini, namun, beliau yang berusia 29 tahun ini masih perlu berfikir panjang mencari jawapan kepada soalan mudah seperti, "Apa? Awak seorang sukarelawan? Eh, bagaimana awak mencari makan dengan kerja macam ini?”

“Adalah perlu bagi orang ramai untuk mengetahui aspek-aspek yang berlainan dalam kerjaya kami. Adalah tugas kami untuk menawarkan

sokongan, tetapi selain daripada menyelaraskan pelan-pelan bantuan kewangan, kami menjalani pengalaman ini

bersama-sama pesakit yang memerlukan bantuan sosial dan emosi, terutama mereka yang baru didiagnosis," kata Cik Ismawanty.

Ini bermakna memberikan semangat dan nasihat kepada mereka sepanjang proses rawatan dan

pemulihan mereka. "Ada yang datang untuk mendapatkan keputusan pemeriksaan kesihatan, tanpa mengetahui penyakit yang

mereka hadapi adalah serius. Walaupun mereka berbincang akan diagnosis

satu-satu jenis penyakit itu dengan doktor, kadang-kadang

mereka tidak berupaya untuk meluahkan perasaan mereka.

Ada pula yang enggan bercakap dengan ahli keluarga mereka kerana bimbang akan membebankan mereka. Dalam situasi seperti inilah, peranan kami amat penting untuk menawarkan sokongan bagi membantu mereka menangani masalahnya," katanya.

Skop kerja sosial Cik Ismawanty yang meliputi pelbagi aspek termasuklah penilaian kekuatan dan daya tahan pesakit, pengantaraan konflik keluarga, pendidikan keluarga, dan menghubungkan pesakit dengan penjaga kepada sumber masyarakat, antara lain.

Cik Ismawanty mendedahkan bahawa satu lagi peranan kritikal yang dimainkannya adalah untuk memastikan kesinambungan penjagaan pesakit yang dibenarkan pulang oleh pihak hospital, terutama bagi pesakit yang fungsi badannya telah terjejas. "Kami menghubungkan mereka dengan sumber yang sedia ada di kawasan kediaman mereka, dan mendidik mereka mengenai dasar-dasar pemerintah yang dapat membantu mereka," katanya.

"Burnout" adalah sebahagian daripada kerjaSetelah berkhidmat dalam kedudukan kanan selama lebih daripada satu tahun, Cik Ismawanty telah mara setapak lagi dengan menangani kes-kes yang lebih rumit. "Sekarang saya menangani kes-kes trauma dan keganasan. Begitu juga dengan kes bunuh diri,” ujarnya. Walaupun kerja sebegini begitu mencabar, dengan mempelajari daripada pegawai kanan yang memberi sokongan telah membuktikan bahawa ia merupakan suatu sumber kekuatan kepada beliau.

Selain daripada merasa empati dan menolong orang dari semua lapisan masyarakat, ibu kepada seorang anak ini mendapati beliau perlu lebih mahir dalam hal pengurusan masa untuk mengimbangi peranan antara tanggungjawab kerja dan keluarganya. Oleh sebab pekerjaan ini boleh memberi kesan kepada emosi, Cik Ismawanty menambah bahawa beliau cenderung untuk menjauhi orang lain dari segi emosi, terutamanya selepas berurusan dengan banyak kes dalam sehari. Syukurlah, beliau dapat mencari jalan keluar dengan mengambil rehat singkat semasa bekerja yang dapat menyegarkan semula fikirannya.

Mencari inspirasi dalam kemuliaan Mengingatkan dirinya mengapa beliau memulakan kerjaya ini merupakan motivasi penting bagi Cik Ismawanty. Kemuliaan kerja sosial menarik minatnya buat pertama kali ketika beliau masih kecil. Bapa Cik Ismawanty memulakan kerjayanya dalam perkhidmatan awam sebagai pegawai perunding cara dan seterusnya sebagai penyelia di rumah kanak-kanak yang kurang bernasib baik. Pengalaman bapanya yang banyak itu mengilhamkan beliau lalu membakar semangat dan keinginannya untuk berkhidmat dan membantu orang lain. "Ayah selalu menjadi inspirasi saya," ujar Cik Ismawanty.

Ia juga membantu Cik Ismawanty melihat dirinya sebagai pengumpul cerita yang memberikan inspirasi dan sukar dilupakan. "Peluang untuk menyaksikan proses rawatan dan pemulihan pesakit dari peringkat awal yang mudah terdedah, ke pemerkasaan mereka dengan sumber dan kaunseling, hingga melihat mereka berdikari walaupun mereka tiada keupayaan. Saya mengumpul cerita-cerita tentang daya tahan mereka kerana ia memberi inspirasi kepada saya untuk meraikan kejayaan kecil. Itulah sebabnya pekerjaan kami penting. Apa yang kami tawarkan kepada pesakit akan berkekalan sepanjang hayat mereka. Ia amat memperkasakan buat diri saya, dan diharapkan kepada mereka juga, ujarnya.
