El Subjuntivo

You have seen so far that the subjunctive isused to describe the following:• Things that may or may not happen (ex- I

want you to do your homework.) • Things that deal with emotions (ex- Your

parents are happy that you won your softball game.)

• Things that are ambiguous (ex- I don’t think my boyfriend is going to the party)

El Subjuntivo

There are phrases and words of volition thathelp remind us when we need to use thesubjunctive tense.

WEIRDO Wedding is a mnemonic devicethat will help you remember when to use the

subjunctiveand which verbs are verbs of volition.

From now on we are going to look at the subjunctive tense as a wedding.

WEIRDO WEDDING- When to use the Subjunctive Tense In order to use the subjunctive tense we must

have a WEIRDO Wedding!

What makes a WEIRDO wedding?1. A bride and groom2. A wedding ring3. A proposal

*All three must be present to have a wedding/Subjunctive Tense*

WEIRDO Wedding

1. Bride and Groom The bride and groom in the wedding represent the

change in subject in the subjunctive sentence. You must have 2 people to get married…and you must have 2 different subjects to use the subjunctive. If there is only one subject in the sentence (ex-yo) then there can not be a weirdo wedding!

*Phrases of volition may substitute for one of the subjects*

WEIRDO Wedding

2. Wedding RingThe wedding ring in subjunctive sentences is represented by the word “que”. Without “que” as our wedding ring there can not be a wedding/subjunctive sentence!

(In some cases “que” is not used-but MOST of the time we will need “que” to have a wedding)

WEIRDO Wedding

3. The ProposalIn order to get married someone has topropose to you….The proposal must be one of the verbs orphrases of volition. This is where theWEIRDO comes into play. Each letter inWEIRDO represents verbs of volition.
