The many trees of Ramon (ox in Maya) surrounding the largest pre-Hispanic site and the significant Chetumal Bay, have given name to the ruins of Oxtankah. According to some archaeologists, this corresponds to the mythical Chactemal and would have been the scene of the first docu-mented American mestizaje. Oxtankah would come to mark the love affair between the Spanish sailor Gonzalo Guerre-ro and Mayan princess Zacil. It is located 16 km north of

Chetumal, heading towards the bay. It is believed that Ox-tankah had flourished during the Classic period (200-600 AD). The city extended to the coast including the island of Tamalcab where remains have been found. When the Spanish arrived, the site was declining yet inhabited, thus the conquerors built a cha-pel known as La Española. The lush Ramones forest and proximity to the beautiful Ca-ribbean bay, make it a great destination with undoubted value both cultural and eco-logical.

Oxtankah
Legend of the Moon Goddess

Oxtankah
Ixchel, was a beautiful Mayan princess in love with a young man named Itzamna. A tributary prince also fell in love with her and wanted her. Ixtab, the elder sister of the princess, decided that the two would fight to the death of the con-testant: the survivor would stay with Ixchel. Itzamna would have won if not for the dirty game of the rival who killed him. Ixchel, after seeing the death of her beloved com-mended her soul to Ixtab and took her life. Ixtab became the Goddess of suicide. The souls of the daughters of the Princess led the lovers to heaven and so Itzamna became the Sun God, and Ixchel, became his wife and the Moon Goddess. In appreciation and as a proof of his love for Ixchel, Itzamna created the brightest stars. According to legend, the goddess Ixchel allows the girls to fall in love and as a result of that love produce a child, that is why she is also considered the goddess of childbirth and fertility.

In the Mexican Caribbean, the hammock is still, in much of the rural population, a traditional place to sleep. Ad-mired by these people as “a gift from the gods”, the ori-gin of the hammock is from the Mayan culture in Central America dating back about 1000 years ago. The Mayans are still masters of this unique, special technique which is multiply reproduced. The first hammocks were woven from the bark of tree Hamack. Later this crust was replaced by the sisal fibers for their softer and more elastic texture. Cotton has only been used for about 60 years to manufacture hammocks. With Columbus, the hammock was introduced Europe, where it soon became, a very popular place to sleep for many European sailors, especially English and French, generally in the boats. The hammock has a long tradition because of its nocturnal freshness and its daily used as a resting place, completely replacing the bed. Since long ago, the hammock has been conquering more and more rooms and gardens.
