OrienteeringTake a new direction!

Pub quiz sports question. Which Moray sporting event hasdrawn the most participants in the last 10 years? A well-knownevent like the Moray Marathons is the obvious answer but sur-prisingly it’s orienteering. When we heard that almost 4000runners had converged on Culbin Forest in the summer of

2007 for what we thought was a minority sport, we asked localclub Moravian Orienteers to explain why so many wereattracted to Moray.Orienteering has been around for a long time. It was inventedin Victorian times by the Swedish army and introduced intoScotland in the 1960s. In essence it’s a cross-country race, but one with one big difference. Instead of following a setroute, runners must work out for themselves how to get roundthe course. The idea is to visit several checkpoints along theway. At the beginner level, they are close together in easily-located positions, mainly reached by running along tracks. Atthe other end of the scale they can be far apart in the remotestplaces, as far as possible from obvious landmarks. Coursesvary between 1 Km and 18 km and can take place not only inrugged mountain and forest areas, but also in parks andtowns. Even Forres has its own orienteering map!In orienteering it’s rarely the fastest runner who wins. It’ssometimes referred to as ‘cunning running’ as it’s the runnerwho navigates fastest who comes out on top. It’s very easy tomake navigation mistakes, especially on harder courses, andthe knack is to make sure your legs don’t go faster than yourbrain! There are thousands of areas mapped for orienteeringin the UK, and Moray has some of the world’s finest orien-teering terrain. Forested sand dune areas like Culbin andRoseisle provide great competition areas because theintricate contour shapes tax even the best navigators, whilethe going under foot is never too rough. This enables older, less agile people to take part too. Orienteering competitionsare divided into 5-year age groups with courses gettingshorter as you get older, so people can keep on competingright into their 80s when athletic ability might be on the wanebut the mind is still just as sharp. Moray’s forests also havelots of paths that make them perfect for beginner-level

courses. Every event lays on courses for the very young, andcompetitive orienteering can start as young as age 7 or 8.The Culbin event in 2007 was part of a 6-Day festival based inGrantown on Spey, attracting over 1000 overseas competi-tors as well as 2500 Brits. In 2008 the forest hosted the BritishChampionships where another 2000 runners descended onthe tiny village of Kintessack. Anyone can take part, whateverthe level of event, and this one was no exception where younglocal children were able to line up alongside elite nationalchampions whose courses shared the same area. Latelythere’s been a boom in adventure running for which naviga-tion at speed is a fundamental part.Local schools have recently discovered orienteering andmany have their own school maps. The area’s Active Schoolsco-ordinators stage inter-school events where hundreds ofchildren have learned to map read in an exciting and activeway. All of Moray’s schools come together at Gordonstounevery April for an annual schools festival and this year young-sters can also look forward to a special competition. On June13th, Culbin Forest will be the venue for the first ever Morayand Highland Junior Orienteering Championships. It’s aimedat novices who have discovered the sport at school, andanyone aged 16 or under on the day can take part. With entryclasses for boys and girls in 2-year categories from under 11

upwards, the event will be combined with a mainstream com-petition open to anyone. This should be an exciting chance forbudding adventure runners to take part in a big event atScottish Orienteering’s Hampden Park! With the 2-yearlyScottish 6-Day Orienteering Festival returning to the MorayCoast in August 2013 it’s the perfect place to start getting intraining for what might be Moray’s biggest sporting event ofthe next decade!Moravian Orienteers stage at least one local event everymonth. They also organise training sessions and enter teamsin races further afield. New members are always welcome soif adventure running Moravian style sounds like your kind ofthing you can find more information on their web sitewww.moravianorienteering.org

During the war between the states, ayoung soldier in the Union Army losthis older brother and his father in thebattle of Gettysburg. The soldierdecided to go to Washington, D.C. tosee President Lincoln to ask for anexemption from military service so thathe could go back and help his sisterand mother with the spring planting onthe farm. When he arrived in Washing-ton, after having received a furloughfrom the military to go and plead hiscase, he went to the White House, ap-proached the front gate and asked tosee the president.

The guard on duty told him, “You can’tsee the president, young man! Don’tyou know there’s a war going on? Thepresident is a very busy man! Now goaway, son! Get back out there on thebattle lines where you belong!” So theyoung soldier left, very disheartened, and was sitting on a little park benchnot far from the White House when alittle boy came up to him. The lad said,“Soldier, you look unhappy. What’swrong?” The soldier looked at the littleboy and began to spill his heart to him.He told of his father and his brotherbeing killed in the war, and of thedesperate situation at home. Heexplained that his mother and sister

had no one to help them with the farm. The little boy listened and said, “I canhelp you, soldier.” He took the soldierby the hand and led him back to thefront gate of the White House. Appar-ently, the guard didn’t notice them, because they weren’t stopped. Theywalked straight to the front door of theWhite House and walked right in. Afterthey got inside, they walked right pastgenerals and high-ranking officials, and no one said a word. The soldiercouldn’t understand this. Why didn’tanyone try to stop them?

Finally, they reached the Oval Office -where the president was working - andthe little boy didn’t even knock on thedoor. He just walked right in and ledthe soldier in with him. There behindthe desk was Abraham Lincoln and hisSecretary of State, looking over battleplans that were laid out on his desk. The president looked at the boy andthen at the soldier and said, “Goodafternoon, Todd. Can you introduceme to your friend?” And Todd Lincoln, the son of the president, said, “Daddy, this soldier needs to talk to you.” Thesoldier pled his case before Mr.Lincoln, and right then and there hereceived the exemption that hedesired. © Youth Specialties 2001

The good news of the gospel is thatthrough faith in Jesus Christ we haveaccess to the Father. Because ofChrist, we can have peace with God.We can come to him anytime, anywhere. “But now in Christ Jesusyou who once were far away havebeen brought near through the bloodof Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and hasdestroyed the barrier, the dividing wallof hostility…For through him we haveaccess to the Father.” (Ephesians2:13, 18)

Many people are trying to find the wayto God. The world often tells us thatmany paths lead to God. If you live agood life, if you don’t steal, if you dogood deeds, if you have a vaguebelieve in a higher power you canknow God. However the bible makes itclear. The only way to know God andthe wonders of eternal life is to putyour faith in Jesus Christ, the son ofGod. Jesus said: “I am the way, thetruth and the life. No one comes to theFather except through me.” John 14v6

I really enjoy informingfellow MSP’s in theScottish Parliament abouthow Moray is home toaround half of Scotland’swhisky distilleries. I liketo tell them that my

summer constituency tours are great fun!Representing Speyside and Moray doeshave its advantages. For instance, it’s nowtraditional to hold the first round of theSpirit of Speyside Whisky Festival whiskyjudging in the Scottish Parliament beforethe finals take place prior to the annualdinner. As the host MSP, I am nowappointed a judge and have to sit alongsidethe professionals and sample anywherebetween 50 and 60 Speyside drams, it’s atough job but someone’s got to do it!However, if any reader is worried about myhealth or their local MSP setting a badexample, don’t worry, as we only take asmall sip of each dram and usually spit itout before eating some more oatcake andwashing out our mouths to help prepare forthe next tasting! This annual event is nowone of my favourite parliamentary duties!

I never thought I wouldbe asked the question -‘Would you like to haveyour picture taken with aGiant Inflatable Colon?’.While it is a fairly surrealstatement to read in a

letter, it is actually one of the more creativeways of getting an issue to the attention ofMP’s. In this case it is the very worthyBowel Cancer Campaign, which, with thesupport of TV personality Lynn FauldsWood is doing a fantastic job raisingawareness of a serious, but also preventa-ble and curable form of cancer. I canrecommend a visit to the campaign’swebsite at www.bowelcancer.tvIt does go to show, though, that campaigns, even on very serious issues, can have a bigimpact through humour and get people tosit up and take notice.

Harry Torryfelt that with more children likely to bewalking to the Academy an increase inspeed limit was not appropriate. MurrayRoss advised that the C&RBoECC R&TCommittee were not made aware ofthese changes and would investigatethe reason for this.Community Planning• Elgin North Area Forum - TheWaulkmill Residents’ Association is nowfreestanding.• Future Funding of Community Council- in favour of Option 2.• Elgin South Area Forum - No regularmeeting took place in April; instead theyhad a Development Planning Meeting.

Harry Torry advised that he hadreported a tree that had fallen into theRiver Lossie at Morriston Park, whichwas removed and cut up into pieces andleft. He then witnessed members of thepublic throwing the pieces into the river.Harry Torry felt this contributed to thelitter problem within Elgin. Cllr Russelladvised that this was an operationalissue, but there is a growing body ofopinion that branches should be left forsustainability and long-term regenera-tion. Murray Ross felt that branches

should be cleared away from theriverside as when the river risesbranches can be swept away and con-gregate under bridges and could lead toflooding. Harry Torry agreed to investi-gate further.• Cllr Russell advised that National Litterday was on Thursday 10th June 2010and International Bio-diversity daySaturday 22nd May 2010.• Cllr Russell requested the assistanceof the C&RBoECC and other communitygroups in creating a ‘Street Name Bank’for future developments. Membersagreed to discuss and put forward anysuggestions.• The Chairman advised that a sugges-tion had been put forward for Committeereports to be circulated to all members7 days prior to the meeting to allowmembers time to digest and makecomment at the meeting. ®Coastal Defences and World War II

in Moray

On the 1st of September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Twodays later, Britain declared war on Germany, marking thebeginning of World War II. Until World War II, Britain suc-cessfully relied on its strong Navy to protect its shores. Evenduring World War I, a German invasion seemed unlikely. Bythe summer of 1940 however, Britain and her allies hadsuffered defeats in Norway, Denmark and France. Germanforces occupied the Channel Islands and Hitler issuedDirective 16, Operation SEALION, outlining the invasion ofGreat Britain. Germany expected Britain to surrender but theBritish did not.

“We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. Weshall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landinggrounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shallfight in the hills. We shall never surrender” - the British PrimeMinister, Winston Churchill, House of Commons 4th June1940

The British Army was un-dermanned and ill-equipped havingsuffered defeat in France. It seemed like invasionwas inevitable but Britainplanned to do everythingit could to stop theenemy. A defence planwas developed thatinvolved the entirecountry, from the Orkney

Islands in the north of Scotland to the south coast of England.Today, archaeological remains of these coastal defences arestill visible all over Britain; they remain as testimony to thedefiant spirit of a nation isolated and under attack.

The focus of General Ironside's defence plan for Britain wasthe construction of land defences during 1940 and 1941. AGerman invasion of Britain would bring with it armoured tanks. The main aim was to combat the movement of tanks by usinga combination of natural and man-made obstacles. Sectionsof coastline, where the enemy could easily land, had a seriesof defences built along them, known as forming a ‘crust’.These coastal defences are evident at Roseisle, Lossie andCulbin.

Man-made obstacles included lines of concrete anti-tankblocks that formed a barrier between regularly placedpillboxes. Pillboxes were small concrete structures where asquad of men could stand protected and fire against theenemy at close range. At Roseisle and Lossie Forests, youcan still see their remains along the beach. Ditches, mine-

fields, walls of scaffolding and barbed wire fences supportedthese defences. Ports were a major enemy target and socoastal gun batteries were placed nearby to protect them. There is one located at Lossie Forest.

After the fall of France, Polish troops were evacuatedalongside the British from Dunkirk. Once they arrived inScotland, the Polish created the 1st Polish Army Corps. Thearmy was under the command of Generals Stanisław Maczekand Marian Kukiel. The Polish forces helped build and mananti-invasion defences along the Scottish coast, including atLossiemouth. The Polish troops were popular in Scotland. “Ican remember marching up Sauchiehall Street and thewelcome we received in our new uniforms.” Dr Kazimierz PiotrDurkacz in Henderson's (2001) ‘The Lion and the Eagle’.

In 1945, the war ended but many Poles could not returnhome. The Soviet Union and communism had taken controlof their homeland. Many families sent word to loved ones tostay in Scotland.Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit(NOFU) recruited skilled lumberjacks to come over toScotland to cut down trees for the war effort. Over threethousand five hundred men volunteered. The island of New-foundland is located off the east coast of Canada. In 1949 itbecame part of Canada, but at the start of World War II it wasa separate country. Unlike the Canadian Forestry Corps(CFC), which was sent to Britain at the same time, the NOFUwas not a military unit. The men were hired on six month longcontracts and were paid the same amount as they were paidat home; two dollars per day or twelve dollars a week.

Although not in the military, many of the men who volunteeredto come over wanted to join the fighting. The work they weredoing, however, was as essential to the success of the war asthe fighting itself. “They are needed here (Britain) on work ofnational importance, and cannot be replaced. Moreover, it isnot easy to train a man, however strong and fit he may be, tobecome a good lumberjack.” Mr Edgar Baird, NOFU Managerin W. J. Passingham (1941), Illustrated News

Today the remains of thecoastal defences are visible inCulbin, Lossie and RoseisleForests. The land is managedby Forestry CommissionScotland and one of the keyroles of the Commission in theirmanagement of this land is theprotection of these monumentsto the British spirit!

HistoricHighland Games

The origin of games and sports predates recorded history. Anexample of a possible early Highland games venue is at Fet-teresso, although that location is technically a few miles southof the Scottish Highlands. It is reported in numerous books and Highland gamesprograms, that King Malcolm III of Scotland, in the 11thcentury, summoned contestants to a foot race to the summitof Craig Choinnich (overlooking Braemar). King Malcolmcreated this foot race in order to find the fastest runner in theland to be his royal messenger. Some have seen in this apoc-ryphal event the origin of today's modern Highland games.During various times of English occupation, from before theWars of Independence to the suppression after the Jacobitewars, the men of Scotland were forbidden to bear or train witharms, in an attempt to prevent another popular Scottishuprising. Scots continued to train for war; they simply did sowith the implements of war replaced with the implements ofthe Highland games.

There is a document from 1703 summoning the clan of theLaird of Grant, Clan Grant. They were to arrive wearingHighland coats and "also with gun, sword and dirk". From thisletter, it is believed that the competitions would have includedfeats of arms. However, the modern Highland games are largely a Victorianinvention, developed after the Highland Clearances.

EEvveennttssCaber toss: A long tapered pine pole or log is stood uprightand hoisted by the competitor who balances it verticallyholding the smaller end in his hands. Then the competitorruns forward attempting to toss it in such a way that itturns end over end with the upper (larger) end striking theground first. Competitors are judged on how closely their throws approxi-mate the ideal 12 o'clock toss on an imaginary clock.Stone put: This event is similar to the modern-day shot put asseen in the Olympic Games. Instead of a steel shot, a largestone of variable weight is often used. The thrower is allowed to use any throwing style so long as

the stone is put with one hand with the stone resting cradledin the neck until the moment of release. Scottish hammer throw: This event is similar to the hammerthrow as seen in modern-day track and field competitions. Around metal ball (weighing 16 or 22 lb for men or 12 or 16 lbfor women) is attached to the end of a shaft about 4 feet inlength and made out of wood, bamboo, rattan, or plastic. Withthe feet in a fixed position, the hammer is whirled about one'shead and thrown for distance over the shoulder. Weight throw, also known as the weight for distance event. Aweight is made of metal and has a handle attached eitherdirectly or by means of a chain. The implement is thrownusing one hand only. The longest throw wins.Weight over the bar, also known as weight for height. Theathletes attempt to toss a 56 pound weight with an attachedhandle over a horizontal bar using only one hand. Eachathlete is allowed three attempts at each height.

MMuussiiccFor many Highland games festival attendees, the mostmemorable of all the events at the games is the massing ofthe pipe bands. Normally held in conjunction with the openingand closing ceremonies of the games, as many as 20 or morepipe bands will march and play togetherIt is, in fact, the music of the bagpipe which has come tosymbolise music at the Games and, indeed, in Scotland itself. In addition to the massed bands, nearly all Highland gamesgatherings feature a wide range of piping and drumming com-petition, including solo piping and drumming, small groupensembles and, of course, the pipe bands themselves.

IInnvveerrnneessss ggaammeessThe date of the first gathering on the banks of the River Nessby our ancestors has been lost in the mists of time and willforever remain a mystery. What we do know is that back in1822 fundraising took place in the town to revive thoseancient Games and to give the Capital of the Highlands aHighland Games that its townsfolk could be proud of.
