Sedibeng African National Con-gress (ANC) 12th Regional Con-ference recently held in Kuruman.

Speaking at the conference Gaut-eng ANC Chairman Paul Masha-tile said, “We have to go back to the basics like keeping our towns clean, roads maintained, water and electricity accessible for our people.

Comrades like meetings; we want work and not meetings. What are the meetings for if there’s no action on the ground? We don’t want lazy leaders; we don’t want leaders who all talk but no action.

We’re coming back end of April, not only to the regional leadership but also to the branches and zones

in Gauteng.

We want an organization that is alive, so we’re coming. We’re com-ing because we want to build a strong ANC.

Gauteng is the second biggest in ANC membership in the coun-try but we want to be number 1. 12 million people live here, so we must be number one.

We want an ANC that is alive every day and not just on confer-ence days. Councillors must do their work. Officials must also do their work.”

Mashatile told delegates that Gauteng ANC was disappointed by some of the activities which

took place ahead of the ANC Sed-ibeng conference. “People were disrupting meetings and even threatening comrades.

Those who contravened the con-stitution, action are going to be taken against them. We must deal with them. There must be action. We must act without fear or fa-vour.”

SANCO Sedibeng Chairman Mlungisi Hlongwane made solid remarks, “We are here to find so-lutions to the challenges faced by the residents of all informal dwell-ings in Sedibeng.

We owe of the people of the Vaal more as the leaders. Our people don’t deserve to be led by fac-

tions.”ANC Sedibeng Elective Confer-

ATNS INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR BURSARIES

Speaking at the sod turning, the District Mayor of Sedibeng, Cllr. Simon Mofokeng, commented that: "This is a momentous occa-sion for the people of Midvaal as we celebrate an exciting future for this region.

The South African landscape is changing with developments like Vaal River City that will leave an economic, institutional and en-vironmental legacy for generations to come.”

“The integrated spatial development project centralises the Vaal Metro and is a welcome creation of a new metropolitan municipality that will bring development and prosperity in the area of Midvaal and benefit the poor areas in this region and fast-track develop-ment and housing delivery,” he said.

The project had its origins in 2007 when it was first mentioned by former president Thabo Mbeki during his state of the nation address that year.

Today, the project has an estimated cost of R7-billion to R11-billion and will initially create up to 7 500 jobs in the construction phase alone.

The establishment of the Greater Vaal Met-ropolitan River City will have many benefits, including but not limited to:

• Geographic consolidation of highly ur-banised areas of rapid growth and develop-ment;

• Large scale residential development pro-jects; and

• Mobility of people, goods and services into and out of the new Metro.

“All we want is the depart-ment to fix the ill-treat-ment that is being given to patients and families at Natalspruit Hospital.”

“If the right procedures were followed and my hus-band was attended I believe he would still be alive”

Treatment Action Cam-paign member Nomthan-dazo Ndlela was at the hos-pital with Mabuya’s family and says she witnessed the nurses’ poor treatment of the family.

Natalspruit Hospital has admitted Mabuya waited for about 12 hours before he was able to get a bed in a ward due to a shortage of beds, according to Gaut-eng Department of Health spokesperson Prince Ham-ca.

However Hamca main-tains Mabuya was moni-tored by nurses about every

two hours.“Even though Mr Mabuya

was nursed in the corridor due to bed shortages, he was constantly monitored by the nursing and medi-cal personnel,” said Hamca, who added that Mabuya’s family will soon be invited back to the hospital to dis-cuss their concerns.

He added that Natalspruit Hospital was not alone in bed shortages.

“Due to an increase in medical patient volumes resulting from a fast-changing disease burden, the whole public health system experiences short-ages of beds as patients require admission instead of being treated as outpa-tients,” he told OurHealth.

“To address this chal-lenge, hospital manage-ment has moved the ad-mission ward to a bigger ward,” added Hamca, say-

ing that MEC for Health Qedani Mahlangu recently announced a new electron-ic bed management system would be rolled out provin-cially to better manage hos-pital beds.

“Some women have wait-ed since July last year for a colposcopy, which is ut-terly unacceptable,” said Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health Jack Bloom said in a statement in response to the story.

“The new Natalspruit Hospital was opened last year with great fanfare by Premier David Makhura who said that it was ‘our hospital of the future,’ Bloom added.

“It has so far been a great disappointment, with over-crowding and long waiting periods in certain depart-ments.”

“If the rIght procedures were followed, he would stIll Be

alIVe!”

BY Wilma Stassen (Health-e News)THE legalisation of medical marijuana

came under the spotlight again after the late Inkatha Freedom Party MP Mario Oriani-Ambrosini’s “Medical Innovation Bill” was revived in parliament recently.

The Bill relapsed when its sponsor, Ambro-sini, died on August 16, 2014. He took his own life after battling with late-stage lung cancer for more than a year. He admitted to using marijuana for medicinal purposes to treat his cancer when he first proposed the bill to parliament in February 2014.

“Cannabis has been proven to have some medicinal qualities and medi-cal marijuana is used commercially in several countries to treat certain ailments.”

The bill calls for the immediate establish-ment of a medical centre where at least 100 patients can be legally treated with medical marijuana, a treatment Ambrosini described as “effective and harmless”.

But some experts disagree with this state-ment.

“People tend to think that natural sub-stances have no side effects and are safe – but there is nothing further from the truth,” says Dr Gerbus Muller, a clinical pharmacolo-gist and toxicologist, and a former lecturer at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medi-cine and Health Sciences.

“All medicines, be it alternative medicines or herbs, have side effects.”

Common side effects of cannabis are an in-crease heart beat, a drop in blood pressure, blood-shot eyes, loss of motivation, anxiety and impaired cognitive functioning, among others.

PUFF, PASS & REGULATEDespite the side effects, Muller believes

that dagga could be used in medicine as long as it is strictly regulated to avoid abuse of the substance.

This includes controlling the production and processing of marijuana, which involves extracting the active ingredient from the plant and dispensing it at predetermined doses.

The cannabis plant has more than 100 ac-tive ingredients of which only one, 9-tet-rahydrocannabinol, or THC, is used in the production of medical marijuana. THC has a potent effect on the central nervous system and is also the chemical that causes eupho-ria, which is responsible for it being abused as a recreational drug.

“The medical benefits of cannabis have been overhyped and is a smokescreen to try and decriminalise dagga”

Medical marijuana is extracted and slight-ly modified THC available in pill or liquid form.

IS THERE A PLACE FOR DAGGA IN MEDICINE?
