Los primeros europeso en instalarse en lo que hoy es Sudáfrica fueron los holandeses de la Compañia de Indias en 1652. Del holandes deriva la lengua actual afrikaans. Hacia finales del 1700 los ingleses toman Cape Town y poco despues se instalan en Natal. Ello llevó a que los afrikaaners iniciaran, hacia 1830, lo que se conoce como el Voortrekker o “La Gran Travesía”, especie de conquista del oeste hacia la zona central, y fundaran dos repúblicas: la de Transvaal y el Orange Free State. Sudáfrica nace formalmente en 1910, siete años después que finalizara la segunda Guerra Anglo-Boer, de la unión de la Gobernación (británica) de Cape Town, las ex repúblicas de Transvaal y Free Orange State y la gobernación (británica) de Natal. En 1947, el Partido Nacionalista ganá pro primera vez el Gobierno e impulsa el establecimiento (formal –ya que en la practica era anterior) del apartheid. En 1961, el Gobierno del apartheid declara su independencia del Commonwealth. Solo en 1994 se producen las primeras elecciones democráticas, sin distinciones de color o etnia. 79% de la población es negra, 7% son blancos, 10% son “colored” (mestizos de la unión de blancos con nativos San y Khoi) y el resto son de origen indio y asiático. El HIV es un problema muy serio, con una tasa de prevalencia del orden del 23% (en Argentina ronda el 0,6% y a nivel mundial ronda el 0,4%) Sudáfrica es una república federal, con un poder ejecutivo unipersonal y un poder legislativo unicameral; el territorio se compone de 9 provincias. RELACIÓN BILATERAL La relación de Argentina con Sudáfrica data del siglo XIX –incluso, durante la segunda guerra Anglo Boer, Argentina vendía caballos al Ejército británico y recibia al primer grupo de inmigrantes afrikaaners. En 1947 se establecen relaciones diplomáticas formales, pero en 1986 y como forma de presionar para la eliminación del odioso régimen del apartheid, nuestro país rompe relaciones con SA. Las mismas se restablecen en 1991, tras la liberación de Nelson Mandela. Existe una distribución mayorista con mercados de concentración en las principales ciudades y una muy eficiente red de supermercados en todo el país, con una calidad de packaging de exportación en cada uno de sus productos, tanto frescos, refrigerados o congelados. Tambien existen carnicerias independientes que abaratan sus costos evitando el empaquetado.

Embajada Argentina en Sudafrica Junio 2010 La aduana sudafricana, en concordancia con la ley local que considera delito el uso de moneda extranjera en territorio sudafricano, publica sus estadísticas en Rand, que es la moneda local. Con el objeto de facilitar la interpretación de las estadísticas, esta Embajada realiza la conversión de Rand a U$. El Rand, por diferentes razones, ha tenido a lo largo del año un alta volatilidad, con un 30% de apreciación de enero a agosto. En este ultimo mes se estabilizó en alrededor de 1U$ = 7,3 Rands. En este sentido, hemos realizado la conversión de las estadísticas asignando un valor al Rand un poco más bajo que el promedio anual (7,5 por unidad) ya que entendemos esto refleja mejor el movimiento comercial y las posibilidades a futuro.

WINE LAW INFORMATION 1 EU WINE REFORM IMPACT ON LABELLING 2 USE OF PIMARICIN 3 UPDATE ON EU ALLERGEN LABELLING 1 EU WINE REFORM IMPACT ON LABELLING From the 1st of August 2009 the EU’s new wine regime will come into effect. One of the main objectives of this new regime is to increase the competitiveness of the EU’s wine producers. At first glance it seems as if the new regime will not change much on the labelling front for wine

We have just received draft implementing measures from the EU Commission. Thankfully. a transitional period up to 31 December 2010 is proposed. Thus. if this proposal is accepted. wines placed on the market or labelled before 31 December 2010. that comply with the relevant labeling provisions applicable before 1 August 2009 may be marketed until stocks are exhausted. However. some questions remain unanswered. For example: (a) Will imports also have to show either “protected designation of origin” (PDO) or “protected geographical indication” (PGI) in the case of Wines of Origin. or will “Wine of Origin” or “W.O.” still be accepted? (b) If provenance is indicated as “Wine of South Africa”. must the designation for the category of the grapevine product (wine) still be indicated or will the “wine” in the provenance indication suffice? (c) Will a South African PDO/WO wine be allowed not to indicate “wine” as will be the case with EU products? (d) We have heard that the implementing measures will differentiate between a “blended rosé” and a “traditional rosé”. Will the oenological processes for this differentiation be spelled out? Will it still accommodate our “Blanc de noir wine”? This matter is not dealt with in the draft implementing measures. As soon as the final implementing measures are available we shall let you have full details on all amendments to the EU’s labelling requirements. Hopefully. all our questions will be answered by then. 2 USE OF PIMARICIN We have had a query on the use of pimaricin (natamycin) in export wine. We can confirm that for most countries we export to. use of this product is not allowed. and can and is analysed for. As an alternative. South Africa and most of our wine trading partner countries do allow the use of dimethyl dicarbonate (velcorin). The O.I.V.’s prescriptions combine the requirements of these countries for use of dimethyl dicarbonate in wine: 2 April 2009 4 of 2009 Subscribe Unsubscribe Contact 2 “Objectives: a) Obtain microbiological stability of bottled wine containing fermentable sugars; b) Prevent the development of unwanted yeast and lactic bacteria. Prescriptions: a) Should only be added shortly before bottling; b) The dosage should be no more than 200 mg/l expressed as dimethyl dicarbonate; c) The addition of dimethyl dicarbonate must not lead to surpassing the maximum content level for methanol in wine. as recommended by the O.I.V.; d) The wine should not be placed on the market as long as dimethyl dicarbonate is detectable.”. 3 UPDATE ON EU ALLERGEN LABELLING

Embajada Argentina en Sudafrica Junio 2010 The EU Commission has confirmed that the new deadline of 31 December 2010 for the indication of the “new” allergens (milk and egg products) has now been officially approved. Interestingly. the draft implementing regulations referred to above provides. as an alternative for “contains sulphites” and as an attempt to avoid the indication of multiple languages. for the use of the pictogram below. Question is. what about the expression “allergy information” in the pictogram – will all EU countries accept this expression in English? The ultimate objective is to be able to show all the allergens (also the milk and egg products as from 31 December 2010) in a pictogram as per the example below. We shall keep you informed of any developments in this regard.
