Introduction

The Texas State Historical Association and the Region 4 Education Service Center are proud to present the Encountering Texas History Conference. This event, for 4th and 7th grade Texas history educators, will focus on the

history of Texas from 1900 through present day. Teachers will be able to choose from a variety of breakout sessions addressing historical content, geography, economics, civics, teaching strategies, and resources.

Texas in World War II Bill O’Neal, State Historian of Texas Texas made a remarkable contribution to the American war effort during World War II. Almost 830,000 Texans, including 12, 000 women, donned uniforms, and more than 23, 000 Texas fighting men died for their country. Texas A&M, an all‐male military college, placed 20,000 men in the armed forces. Texas oil fueled the Allied war effort, while Texas shipyards and defense plants‐including many in the Houston area‐provided a flood of war machines and munitions during the war effort. The most decorated combat soldier and sailor both came from Texas.

100 A Galveston and the Great Storm of 1900 Andrew Coleman, Galveston Historical Foundation This presentation will provide an overview of Galveston, Texas and the 1900 hurricane which devastated the island and left more than 6,000 dead. It will cover the aftermath of the hurricane on the island, grade raising and construction of the seawall, and the storm’s influence on the city throughout the 20th century.

Teaching Texas Heroes Kathy Gause, The Adventures of Arnie Armadillo The Adventures of Arnie Armadillo in the State of Texas are the result of an idea for a series of stories for Kathy Gause’s grandchildren. It is now an excellent resource for elementary school teachers. Her first series is about the geography and wildlife of Texas. Her second series is about the men and women who helped Texas become first a republic and then a state. There will be an activity to see how well the participants know their Texas heroes. Each participant will be entered into a drawing for a free plush “Arnie Armadillo.” This session is targeted for grades K‐5 and Instructional Resource.

100 D From Spindletop to Fracking: Oil Impacts the Economy Laura Ewing, Texas Council on Economic Education Spindletop impacted the 20th century energy and economy of Texas, and fracturing has done the same for the 21st century. Teachers will learn how to access lessons on the Texas economy in the 19th and 20th centuries with an update on fracturing today. Primary source documents add interest for 4th and 7th graders as they learn the costs of working in the oil fields.

100 E Wunderlich Farm Interactive History Park Steve Baird, Klein Historical Foundation Using hands on demonstrations to engage students to show and experience what life was like in 4 distinct time periods (1884, 1916, 1925, and 1946) within the small German pioneer community of Big Cypress (Klein, TX). Open for field trips, Christmas events, and a Texas Heritage Day. Centered around 4 historic main buildings we allow you to step back into the history.


100 A Crime and Punishment in the Texas Past: Fact Versus Fiction Bartee Haile, The History Press Session Sponsored by The History Press A condensed but captivating review of Mr. Haile’s two books, Texas Depression‐Era Desperadoes and Murder Most Texan, both published by The History Press in 2014. The first tells the stories of those Lone Star outlaws, who gave the police fits and the public a vicarious thrill during the tough times of the 1930s, and the second delves into sixteen classic murder cases, a few well‐known but most long forgotten, from

1877 to the 1980s. *Mr. Haile will be available during the reception to sign books. Books can be purchased at the History Press book signing table.

100 E Home Front: Texas in World War II Mike Vance, Houston Arts and Media Houston Arts and Media is in production for a major documentary, Home Front: Texas in World War II. All aspects of the war effort in Texas will be discussed at this presentation with specific links to the first hand stories that have already been gathered by HAM’s film crews. This includes military bases, rationing, coastal defense, POW camps, industrial efforts and much more.

General Session The New Deal is All Around US: Teaching the New Deal in Texas Keith Volanto, Collin College Session Sponsored by Abigail Press The impact of the New Deal on Texas was extensive, though often unknown to many today. In this presentation, Dr. Volanto will provide numerous examples of important laws, Depression Era work projects, and other ways in which the New Deal not only impacted the state during the 1930s, but also how these initiatives still affect modern Texans every day.

100 A Me and Jerome Kris Rutherford, The History Press Session Sponsored by The History Press Kris Rutherford, author of “Baseball on the Prairie: How Seven Small Town Teams Shaped Texas League History,” will offer participants, insight into the early days of professional baseball in Texas. From the founders to the teams to the players, participants will learn how the Texas League began and how, what were then small towns in North Texas, held the League together thorough 1907.

New and Accessible Texas & US History Film Resources Caitlin McColl, Texas Archive of the Moving Image The Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TexasArchive.org) provides access to primary and secondary source film resources relating to Texas, the US, and World History, as well as free lesson plans coordinated to the Social Studies TEKS for grades K‐12. Use this vast collection in your classroom or have your students use it as a research tool at home. This free, growing, online collection of educator resources addresses a range of topics including early Texas history, WWII, the Civil Rights Movement, understanding primary and secondary sources, the oil industry, commerce, geography, and culture.

McCrae, Former Texas Rangers, Lone Star Ranger Academy This presentation describes the Lone Star Ranger Academy programs that utilize story, song and living history to excite, entertain and enlighten students about the role Texas Rangers played in the history of Texas, while instilling good citizenship.


100 A A Tale of Two Governors; James and Miriam Ferguson Carol O’Keefe Wilson, UNT Press This session will provide an overview of the lives and governorships of this infamous couple. Carol O’Keefe Wilson plans to tie in a discussion about a children's book written about Miriam, and to talk about the delicate subject of teaching about aspects of history that are not necessarily proud moments.

100 B Educational Programming and Resources from the Texas Historical Commission Lisa Worley, Texas Historical Commission Staff from the Texas Historical Commission will discuss educational programming and resources available for teachers, including learning local history using historical markers, historic cemeteries, etc., as well as presenting plans for development of statewide educational programming.

100 D 5Es Over Texas: Student‐Centered Lessons for Texas: The Galveston Storm and the Dust Bowl Debbie Behling, Region 4 Education Service Center Experience a 5E lesson, a student‐centered, engaged learner lesson model that addresses Texas history content. Learn how Texas history supports the curriculum tested on the Grade 8 STAAR and U.S. History EOC.

100 E Dredged to Excellence: 100 years on the Houston Ship Channel Debbie Harwell, Houston History Magazine The Houston Ship Channel has its roots in the founding of a town by the bayou. Today it is one of the nation’s busiest and largest ports, but the story does not stop there. This presentation will take a look at how it became a trend setter for similar projects across the county and what has made it one of Texas’s biggest economic engines.

100 A The Impact of NASA on the Lone Star State Jennifer Ross‐Nazzal, NASA Johnson Space Center This presentation explores how NASA impacted the community surrounding the NASA Johnson Space Center, known as Clear Lake, as well as the rest of the state. Special attention is paid to the cultural, social, economic, and educational impact of the Johnson Space Center since 1961, when NASA decided to build a Center on a prairie south of Houston.

100 B The Texas Digital Newspaper Program: 2.5 Million Pages of Newspapers in Your Classroom Ana Krahmer, The Portal to Texas History, UNT Digital Libraries The Texas Digital Newspaper Program is a free and open resource comprised of nearly 2.5 million pages of Texas newspapers, spanning from 1829 to the present day. This presentation will go over how to use these rich primary sources in the classroom and will include strategies for finding information, for browsing the newspaper collection, and for teaching students how to work with the newspapers in their own research.

100 D Where are the Bodies Buried? Interactive Class Discussions for Texas History Kristi Grubaugh, Teachers’ Curriculum Institute Experience how the TCI Response Group strategy can be used in your classroom to make your students think like historians. Use primary source documents to lead students to writing opinion pieces. Learn how to honor discussion time with a grade by using a simple scoring method. Leave with a wealth of handouts.

100 E Oveta Culp Hobby: How a Small‐Town Texas Girl Became a National Treasure Debra Winegarten, South University Oveta Culp Hobby, a native Texan from Killeen, went on to be the youngest Parliamentarian of the Texas legislature, the first woman to earn the rank of colonel in the US Army, the Director of the Women’s Army Corps for WWII, and the second woman to hold a presidential cabinet position. Join professor and author Debra L. Winegarten as she recounts the story of this fascinating woman, through the use of vintage photographs from her recently released book from UT Press: Oveta Culp Hobby: Colonel, Cabinet Member, Philanthropist.

100 A Chasing the Cure: Innovative Approaches to Teaching the History of Medicine in Texas Mari Nicholson Preuss, The University of Houston – Downtown Incorporating the history of medicine into lessons focused on historical methods offers an engaging interdisciplinary approach to teaching students how to analyze primary source documents. This workshop utilizes primary source documents from the first half of the twentieth collected from the State Tuberculosis Hospital located outside San Angelo.

100 B Teaching Texas History Through the Constitutions Jan Miller & Jerry Perry, Law‐Related Education This session will be devoted to an examination of Texas’ colorful history through a study of the eight constitutions under which Texas has existed. Throughout the presentation teachers will receive interactive lessons which can be adapted for their particular classroom.

100 C Toward a More Inclusive Texas History Frank de la Teja, Texas State University Session Sponsored by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt At a time when the state’s population is growing increasingly diverse, outdated a chauvinistic representations of who and what are important in understand the state’s past deserve careful consideration. The recent revision of the TEKS offers considerable opportunities for broadening the way Texas history is presented to our 4th and 7th grade schoolchildren. This presentation explores the changes and some of the resources that can help teachers address them.

General Session – Panel Presentation and Discussion J’Nell Pate, Tarrant County College Military Activity in Fort Worth During World War II Defense activity in the city of Fort Worth during World War II was massive. It changed the course of the city’s history from a “Cowtown” to an “Arsenal of Defense.” This presentation will summarize the institutions and agencies that developed during the war and those that have remained to the present to make defense the city’s major economic strength. The contributions of many people added tremendously to the success of the military efforts.

Louis Fairchild, West Texas A&M University, retired The WWII war effort in Orange, Texas In 1940 Orange was a small, sleepy East Texas town of 7,500 people. A new shipyard and contracts to build destroyers, destroyer escorts, and other naval vessels increased the immediate area population to some 60,000. Those few dynamic war years transformed the community, the native residents, and the newcomers who came in to build ships. These wartime changes in Orange will be discussed.

William McWhorter, Texas Historical Commission Texas in World War II On September 2, 2005, the Texas Historical Commission (THC), the state agency for historic preservation, led a celebration at the State Capitol, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. This event launched the THC’s Texas in World War II initiative, to honor the pivotal role that our state played in all aspects of the conflict. This presentation will cover some of the most interesting and, in some cases, under told aspects of Texas in World War II.

100 A The Other Great Migration: The Movement of Rural African Americans to Houston, 1900‐1941 Bernadette Pruitt, Sam Houston State University This presentation commemorates the Great Migrations of the twentieth century. Most scholars recognize the mass movement of six to seven million southern Blacks into the northern and western United States in the last century. While important, this historiographical trend ignores the millions of African Americans who remained in the South, choosing instead to relocate from their rural and small‐town surroundings to cities. Thousands of Blacks from eastern Texas and Louisiana trekked to Houston in the twentieth century for the same reasons internal migrants fled to Chicago, Detroit, Gray, New York, the San Francisco Bay, etc. They sought progress, independence, and interdependence. In the process, they helped create the energy capital of the world.

100 A Mapping Houston’s History: GIS and the Houston Area Digital Archives Jeanette Sewell, Houston Public Library The Houston Area Digital Archives is engaged in an exciting new GIS (geographic information system) project to map Houston’s history. This presentation will explore and display the primary sources that will be georeferenced on interactive, layered maps.

100 B Resources for Teaching Texas History JoNeita Kelly, Texas State Historical Association Planning and preparation for any classroom can be a daunting task. The Texas State Historical Association should be your first stop on the road to planning engaging, content‐rich, useful activities and lesson plans. This session will introduce you to a wealth of free, online resources such as TeachingTexas.org, Texas Insights, the Texas Almanac, and the Handbook of Texas Online.
