Energy Efficiency Initiatives for Commercial Energy Management
Organisations with energy bills in excess of £500,000 are obliged to make significant improvements
in energy usage and carbon emissions in order to meet the mandatory carbon trading scheme ‘CRC
Energy Efficiency Scheme’ (CRC EES).
In order for companies to take the steps to reducing their energy consumption, they must first
measure and monitor the existing output which will enable them to subsequently improve upon
their energy consumption moving forward.
There are basic energy management systems that can be put in place for reporting monthly
consumption of gas, electricity and logistics.
As a starting pointing, organisations should undergo a thorough energy survey, which will highlight
areas for improvement and demonstrate the changes needed to enable them to save energy and
reduce emissions moving forward.
In addition to this, online monitoring toolkits can be used for progress monitoring and calculating
savings for energy efficiency projects.
Once energy measurement tactics are put in place and energy consumption is being identified, the
overall usage can then be improved upon.
Organisations taking steps to becoming more energy efficient can quickly become more sustainable
whilst keeping to best practice measures allowing them to formalise their energy policies and meet
green objectives.
With staff involvement at all levels, companies can establish a culture of energy awareness and a
corporate ethos to continually improve their energy management and become more sustainable.
William Dyer, MD of William Dyer Electrical (UK) Limited explains “Working with large public and
private sector organisations to enable them to become more energy efficient is a core part of our
business. All of our installations enable clients to make significant reductions in energy consumption
and therefore their carbon emissions.”
Energy Efficiency Initiative
As an organisation, William Dyer Electrical (UK) Ltd was recently recognised in the national Electrical
Industry Awards for the Energy Efficiency Initiative Award 2011. This recognition was based on one
of the recent energy efficiency projects that they worked on with one of the North West’s largest
manufacturing plants.
The extensive project involved the installation of energy efficient lighting throughout the factory
with daylight dimming sensors built into each fitting. Low energy cluster lamps were installed to
loading bay low bay fittings which required the removal of hundreds of energy consuming 400watt
lamps. In addition to this, 100watt cluster lamps linked to photocell and time clock controls were
installed which maximised the energy efficiency and led to 75% reduction in energy in this area
alone.
The installation of smart meters followed by staff training enables William Dyer Electrical and their
client to continually monitor energy consumption and detect when sudden changes in energy usage
occur making it easy for these changes to be acted upon quickly thus preventing unnecessary energy
wastage.
In large manufacturing plants, machinery is one of the largest consumers of energy but measures
can be taken to significantly reduce the output. In this particular case, soft start equipment was
installed to prevent wastage on all high current equipment.
Through staff involvement and commitment from a savvy energy management team, this
organisation made financial savings of approximately £200,000 and were able to see significant
reductions in energy consumption and meet their green objectives.
By implementing these energy saving measures, electricity savings amounted to 14% in year 1 and
8% in year 2 (156340 and 75430kWh).
Capitalising on this Energy Efficiency Expertise
William Dyer Electrical (UK) Limited has been trading for over 20 years and has continually sought to
progress and develop the business in line with new technologies and best practice. They have grown
the business and subsequently become one of the UK’s leading Electrical Energy Efficiency
Contractors.
All of their recommendations are made with environmental impact at the forefront. Having
progressed the business with green initiatives in mind, their service offering now includes Solar PV
installations. This means that as well as saving energy through electrical energy efficient
installations, their clients also have the opportunity to produce energy of their own.
