The new version of DFTP has existed for several weeks? undergoing

testing at CCA ? HARVARD? MIT-AI ? and SUAI . It is now being

INSTALLED AT ALL DFTP SITES THROUGHOUT THE NETWORK. USERS "' DATAIS BEING TRANSFERRED TO THE NEW FORMAT ON THE TEN BY CCA. THEOLD DATA? ACCESSIBLE BY THE OLD VERSION OF DFTP? WILL BE KEPT

AVAILABLE FOR AT LEAST A WEEK? BUT ALLOCATIONS WILL BE SET TO

PREVENT ANY FURTHER DATA FROM BEING STORED IN THE OLD SYSTEM?

ONCE A SITE'"S DATA HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE NEW VERSION. CCAWILL ATTEMPT TO ARRANGE WITH SITE LIAISONS SD THAT BOTH VERSIONS

WILL BE AVAILABLE TO USERS? WITH THE NEW VERSION CALLED NDFTPUNTIL THE SITE'S DATA HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED? AND RENAMED TO DFTPRT THAT PDINT. SIMILARLY? THE OLD VERSION WILL EE CALLED DFTPEEFDRE? AND DDFTP AFTER THE TRANSFER AT EACH SITE.

The riP'v version of DFTP is distinguished by . v»r .fea tures :

I. Aval lability. New DFTP runs on ITS, SAIL. TF.NEX,TOPS- 1 3, and FOPS-20 systems; it.

also he innimplemented on MULTICS.

2. Capacity. New DFT^ uses a mass store, an Amoex TerabitMemory System (TBM), This device currently orovides enon-line capability of about 200 bi llion bits, expandableup to 3.1 trillion ( 10**12) in the full configuration. As a consequence, most users have had their allocationsincrease i. As another consequence, users may evnectnoticeable de lays when they first ar oe ss d. t . j s it {<=moved from tertiary to secondary storage. These delays

(P 3. Mew storage structure. The new DFTP collects files fora LLS£H into one or more laroe Datacomnuter files. ibisnew oraanization is much more snare-efficient than tho

4. Extended functions. Several new fp.^turec follow from

" DFTP's new f i l° oroani zation: ma. File Sets. Commands which refer to files may now

specify a set of files in place of a single file,

stores all four files in the user's directory

which have a first name of MF00", with a sinol^i

c. DELETE, UNDELETE, and EXPUNGE. ihe effect ofDELETE is now revocable; until an EXPUNGEcommand is executed, deleted files may be rescuedand returned to normal status. EXPUNGE should hea fairly infrequent operation, used to reclaimspace when an allocation is fi lied with unwanted

Details of ConversionThe new version of DFTP has existed for several weeks, undergoingtesting at CCA, HARVARD, MIT-AI, and SUAI . It is now beinoinstalled at all DFTP sites throughout the network. Users' datais being transferred to the new format on the TBM by CCA. The

# old data, accessible oy the old version of DFTP, will be keptavailable for at least a week; but allocations will be set toprevent any further data from be inn stored in the old system,

# once a site's -lata has been transferred to the new version. CCAwill attempt to arrange with site liaisons so that both versionswill be available to users, with the new version called NDFTP

. until the site's data has been transferred, and renamed to DFTPat that point. Similarly, the old version will be called DFTPbefore, and ODFiP after the transfer at each site.
