Jure Grando, the First European VampireThe inhabitants of Kringa even today feel the slight fear talking about Jure Grando, the unusual vampire-man who was the cause of fear and unease in the village. The story, which was written down by baron Johann Weickhard Valvasor, a historian and a travel writer, says that Jure Grando, an inhabitant of Kringa, died in 1656 and that he was buried at the lo-cal cemetery. He soon started ap-pearing to the locals, he haunted them and knocked at their doors, and after his visit to a house, a person living in it would suddenly die. Even his widow complained that he was often visiting and molesting her. According to the legend, the vampire Jure Grando had been haunting Kringa for 16 years until a group of brave villag-ers, led by the priest, decided to dig up his grave. They found him pink, with a smirk on his face. The priest started the exorcism, but when they tried to spear him with the hawthorn pole, the spear kept bouncing from the body, so finally a villager chopped of his head with an axe. The dead man shrieked, and the grave was filled with blood. The group then buried the grave and the vam-pire never appeared again. Jure Grando is nowadays one of the most popular characters of the Istrian folk tales, and he was also mentioned as the first vampire in Europe. Look for Kringa - it is a small town where a vampire lived many years before Dracula caused fear and horror in Tran-sylvania.

The 75th Birthday of the Little Town of Raša The building of the modern miners’ town of Raša was started in mid 1936. Back then, Italy was seriously preparing for the World War Two and it needed every ton of stone coal from Raša. The town was being built day and night under close supervision of Gustavo Pulitzer Finali, a well-known architect of that period from Trieste, who was the author of the whole building project - which is an exception in the history of architecture. After he came to power in Italy, in 1928 Mussolini started with the planned foundation of twelve new cities, Sabaudia, Littoria, Aprilia, Pontinia and

Arsia (Raša) among them, within the ‘Città di fondazione’ project. Several towns were planned especially for miners, and Raša was constructed as the first of them. Based on the experience of Raša, the town of Carbonia was built simultaneously at Sicily in 1937. It is rare for the his-tory of a town to be known when the town had a ‘grand opening’. In the presence of the Duke of Spoleto, Raša was inaugurated on 04 November 1937. There is a rumour that Mussolini himself visited Raša in August 1936, but he wasn’t happy with the position in the valley as it wasn’t impressive and prestigious enough to

convey the message on the grandeur of the regime, but he soon agreed that it was most convenient to build the town next to the pits, so that the miners will be closer to their homes. Raša then got the hospital, the telephone switching office and 130 telephones, a hotel, public lighting, a cinema, a pool, a football field, theatre, thermal power plants Vlaška and the Church of St Barbara, who is a patron saint of the miners. The total of 22 thousand square meters of pavements and roads were regulated, too.

The Miner’s Republic is a tour of the historic loca-tions of Istria’s coal mines in Labin and Raša that includes experiencing life in the mine itself. The tour begins in front of the Lamparna Cultural Centre where visitors will be given lamps and other rookie miner equipment. After the roll-call and a welcome drink of home-made grappa (for bravery!), a bus takes guests to the en-trance of the Raša mine. Two foremen lead their group of miners through a network of underground tunnels to shafts 1 and 2 where they will attend an audiovisual performance by Labin Art Express. This is followed by returning to Lam-parna where the new miners will return their equipment and receive a traditional miner’s ‘4th meal’ after which they can view a temporary miner’s exhibition by the Labin People’s Museum in KuC ‘Lamparna’.

Borisi, the founders of FuntanaIt is reasonable to assume that the prominent nobles Borisi (Bo-ricius, Borisci, Boriš) are the only patrician family originating from Bar who preserved until the 20th century. It is no longer exist-ent, but the history of this clan may be traced along the entire Adriatic coast, from the Venetian terraferma to Bar, from where they originated. The patrician clan Borisi embodies ethno-cultural and social interactions, as well as communication courses and influences of civilisation herit-age of the Adriatic environment. Whether being nobles, commons or peasants, people from Bar and its surroundings have al-ways been jealously guarding their identity, the religious one in particular, remaining faithful to the Catholic church and Vicar of Christ on earth even during the most challenging times. The Borisi moved from Bar to Istria at the end of the 16th century escaping Turkish attacks; most probably first to Koper, since in 1617 they are referred to as no-bility in Koper. Their subordinates

followed with their families as well. Their founder was Bernardo Borisi, who had two brothers: Francesco and Marc’Antonio; the latter was a Venetian dragoman in Constantinople; the elected translator in Constantinople, and the first Venetian to be named Dragomano grande. The Borisi referred to their ancestor, the great dragoman, official translator, when huge expenses regarding refugees’ accommodation were imposed to them. In the year 1610 Borisi built a castle in Funtana, witnessed by the Latin script on the traverse.

historyhistory

In open-air archaeological parks the visitor will find remains of ancient civilizations: the foundations of their lodgings, walls and artefacts that could not be placed in a museum but remain at the original site, bearing witness to the ancient people of Istria, their customs and lives. We learn of the Bronze Age tribes through their hill-fort villages in over three hundred locations in Istria, through their thick fortified walls, graves and gravestones. These little known hill-fort inhabitants were succeeded by the Histri - an Iron Age people. Lavish rustic villas and outbuildings along the west coast tell the story of Roman culture that blossomed in Istria after the Roman conquest of the Histri people. At the end of the 19th century an impressive Roman villa was discovered in Vižula and eminent archaeologists of the time concluded that Vižula could have been the place Crispo was murdered...

Roman villa in Valbandon Römische Villa in ValbandonAt the very site where freshwater flows into the shallow Valbandon Bay, between 1909 and 1912, A. Gnirs discovered remains of two residential type complexes of classical architecture. By means of two dikes the shallow and muddy bay was turned into two almost completely enclosed fishponds where seawater mixed with freshwater. Excavations at the northern part of the coast yielded areas open towards the sea with floor mosaics composed in the multi-coloured technique. On the southern part of the coast stood structures with two courtyards with porticos, and two water cisterns. By the fragments of building material, brick, remains of the villa date it to the 1st century, at the time of imperial rule. Topographically it belonged to a rural site located in the interior, half a kilometre from the villa, on the west coast of Istria. It belonged to one of the largest types of luxurious villa rustica. By its structure, the villa was characteristic for the Hellenistic - Roman period, meaning that it consisted of independent structures which were then interconnected by halls, thus forming an integral unit. The villa complex is divided into two groups of structures. One is located on the northern side of the coast, and the other follows along the peninsula of the southern coast on the east side. Regardless of the distance, these two structures formed an integral complex, connected by a 60-meter-long pier.

There are numerous archaeologi-cal sites with Roman remains on the Brijuni IslandsDie archäologische Lokalität mit Resten römischer Gebäude be-findet sich auf den Brijuni Inseln

Poreč, an important Venetian city in Istria and headquarters of the church diocese, at the end of the winter of 1699 was the place of an unscrupulous event that horrified the population and was heard all the way to Venice. On February 6th, the majestic and ancient Euphra-sian Basilica was burgled. The man behind the burglary, Domenico Furlan, had arrived in Poreč from Coloredo di Monte Albano near Udine in Italy, likely to visit his brother who was a carpenter. He broke into the church under the cloak of night, destroyed the renaissance altarpiece made of gold plated silver, broke it into pieces and took it together with the monstrance and other valuable items from the tabernacle. He was quickly arrested by the guards and people of Poreč. He was brought before the city may-or Alessandro Barbaro who sentenced him to death by execution and ordered the cremation of his dead body, regardless of the fact that everything he had taken had been returned and that the sale of the Furlan family home in Coloredo had paid for the repair of the altarpiece. The sentence was merciless and Furlan was executed before the people of Poreč on February 23rd 1699. You can see the re-enactment of scenes from this story at historical locations in the old city of Poreč. Novigrad, a town enclosed by wallsThe old nucleus of Novigrad was once entirely surrounded by defensive walls. Today only fragments of these walls have been preserved. The town was fortified in the thirteenth century with the coming of Venetian rule. In the turbulent times of warring between the powerful Italian ports of Venice and Genoa for supremacy in the Adriatic, Novigrad was finally forced to ac-knowledge Venetian rule in 1270, with fortification beginning shortly after. The walls of Novigrad were the result of the pains-taking labour of Istrian craftsmen, who used archaic methods to erect and maintain the tall ramparts made of broken stone. The walls were topped with crenulations (merlatura), a typical feature of medieval defence architecture. After their construc-tion, the walls were renovated a number of times and rein-forced with round Renaissance towers. Preserved alongside the town gates that once were the main entrance to Novigrad is a quadrilateral tower dating back to an earlier period. It is assumed that these medieval walls were built on much older foundations from Antiquity.

The medieval historic core is situated in the most elevated part of the town (Gorica). The walls that surround it were built in 1300 and re-fortified in the 15th and 16th cc. Jahrhunderts wieder befestigt.

Istrian Architectural Heritage during Venetian ruleVenice’s long rule on the west

coast (13th -18th century) and in

Istria’s interior (15th -18th centu-

ry) has left a trail of architecture

and monuments. In the 15th cen-

tury many streets and squares al-

ready had a Venetian look. Even

in smaller towns, houses were

built with large windows and

balconies in the style of Venetian

Floral Gothic. Internal courtyards

were introduced, and houses had

several stories. In the late Mid-

dle Ages and the Baroque, the

aristocracy and wealthy bour-

geois families built palaces. We

find Venetian influence not only

in residential buildings, but also

in public buildings such as town

halls. Other kinds of public archi-

tecture such as defensive tow-

ers, fortifications or town loggias,

abundant in Istrian towns, as well

as many churches, carry the seal

of Serenissima.

nenraum Istriens (15.-18. Jh.) ließ

eine reiche Spur in der Architek-

tur und bei Denkmälern. Schon

seit dem 15. Jh. bekamen viele

Straßen und Plätze ein dominan-

tes venezianisches Aussehen

und schon in kleineren Städten

baute man Häuser mit großen

Fenstern und Balkonen im Stil

venezianischer Gotik. Die Innen-

höfe wurden eingeführt und die

Häuser hatten mehrere Stocke,

jeder hatte eine andere Funktion.

Im späten Mittelalter sowie in der

Barockzeit baute man Paläste für

reiche bürgerliche Familien und

Adel. Außer in Wohnarchitektur

wurde der venezianische Einfluss

in öffentlichen Gebäuden wie

Komunalpaläste anerkannt. Ein

Serenissima-Siegel haben auch

andere Arten öffentlicher Archi-

tektur - Wehrtürme, Mauern oder

lokale Logen, die in istrischen

Städten im Überfluss sind, sowie

zahlreiche Kirchen.

The main gate of medieval VrsarNext to the church of St. Foška there is the eastern gate of Vrsar. In the past centuries this was the main entrance to the medieval town, which as late as the 19th century began to expand down the hill slopes. Until the 19th cen-tury there were only a few lonely houses or some church outside the walls. This Romanesque gate dates from the 13th century. A semicircular arch is carefully carved. At the inner part of the gate-posts two rings can still be seen, one made of stone and the other of iron, by means of which the wooden wings were fixed to the posts. The gate used to be a part of town walls, so above it a fragment of the ancient wall has been preserved. On a shield-shaped stone tile there is shallow relief with a floral motif depict-ing a miniature lion of St. Mark, symbol of the Venetian Republic, holding a Mark the Evangelist’s book. The lion’s wings are raised, his tail is lowered and in his paws he holds a closed book, indicating that the relief was made during wartime. Peacetime lions used

to have an open book in their paws with the Latin text: Peace to you, my Mark the Evangelist. The lion resembles the Venetian lions from the 14th century, but also the ones from the 15th and 16th centuries, so it is very dif-ficult to date it precisely. The first Venetian lions appeared on pub-lic buildings in Istria at the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th century. From the 10th till the 18th century Vrsar belonged to the Poreč Bishopric, so the lion might had been brought here from somewhere else and put above the gate after 1778, when Venice took Vrsar over from Poreč Bishops. Jh.

Traktor Story Nova Vas (Jama Baredine)Historic tractors - A story of bread, olive oil and wine - Tresh-ing machines exhibitionHistorische Traktoren - Geschichte über Brot, Olivenöl und Wein - Dreschmaschinen

village could use it not only for threshing but also as a place for getting together, for meetings of the village council and as a sort of theatre in which all people were seated at an equal distance from the centre. In rare occasions, a threshing floor was constructed outside a village, near a river or stream, or by wheat fields that were not located close to the village. In these cases the floor was usually earthen and there was no wall. The grain stalks were treaded on by domestic animals or by people using a special two-part flail. The stalks were then removed and the grain thrown into the air with a shovel. The chaff would be blown away by the wind while the grains would fall on the threshing floor.

A threshing floor is a circular area used for threshing. It was usually located within a village or, more rarely, outside a village, in a place exposed to the wind. It could be made of stone slabs surrounded by a wall where people could sit. In the middle of the threshing floor was a wooden column around which oxen or horses would circle, treading the grain stalks and helping to separate the grain from the chaff. The threshing floor was sometimes constructed next to family houses, near church entrances or in the centre of a village. In this way, the entire

Old Buzet Altertümliches BuzetAccording to legend the cities on the hilltops of the Mirna River Valley were built by giants, and one of these cities is Buzet. The Romans used it as a fort, and the city flourished when the headquarters of the Rašpor Captain (an important Venetian official) was moved from Rašpor to Buzet in 1511. The city’s appear-ance today is a result of these intense urban changes that occurred in the 17th and 18th centuries. At the end of the 19th and begin-ning of the 20th century Buzet was under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy as the national rebirth was gaining momentum, and it became more and more common to hear Croatian being spoken in the streets alongside Italian. The administrative and commercial part of the city was precisely the Old City, where artisan businesses and shops developed, and a large, annual fair was held celebrating the city called ‘Subotina’. This event is celebrated today on the first Sunday after the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (September 9th), called ‘Old Subotina’. Old Buzet reawakens a way of life and celebra-tion from the 20th century. Fairs, FemaleTraveling Merchants and Marketplaces Marketplaces in cities and occasional fairs in smaller localities were of key importance for commerce in Istria already from Roman times. Up until the 1950’s, women and only occasionally men occupied an almost mythical role, because each day they went on foot to the cities and sold their goods either there on the way there. Women from the Ćićarija region would go to Trieste to sell milk, lambs, wool, eggs, curd and other things, hiking up to six hours. The Šavrinke (women from the region of Istria that is situated in Slovenia nowadays) roamed across villages in the Buje region, and even those situated further down to the south, and collected eggs that they then brought down to Trieste either in huge baskets that they carried on their heads or on mules, and in return they would bring from the city. Women from the surrounding areas would come to the marketplace at Pula, often on foot, but also in horse drawn carriages driven by their fathers and husbands.

Minestra is the most common Istrian dish. The basic ingredient of every Istrian minestra is pesto: bacon or pancetta, česan (garlic) and prešemul (parsley), squashed on a cutting board. In some regions of Istria dišfrit (browned flour) is added, and in still other regions olive oil is added.

Kitchen Industrialization in the 19th century, coupled with a new role for women in urban environments, brought about a veritable revolution in the mode of equipping kitchens. Fireplaces, old plate racks and the occa-sional chest of drawers were all substituted with showcases and woodburning stoves at the end of the 19th century. Ice-block refrigerators that were invented in 1899 soon began to be used at Pula, the main harbor of the imperial Austrian navy, where all innovations were first intro-duced on the market. The use of electricity-poweredrefrigerators on a mass scale will begin in the middle of the sixties (in certains areas even before that) of the last century, parallel with the use of electricity-powered stoves, and the gradual introduction of hang-ing cabinets (i.e. American-style kitchens). The mode of kitchen outfitting closely follows the fashion trends of a particular period of time. Kitchen furniture, vessels for food preparation and consumption, home appliance... they all bear the stylistic hall-marks of the perod when they were produced and are conse-quently an excellent indicator of the prevalent tastes that existed during a certain period of time.

I ristoranti d’Italia 2012: Istra - Terra magica‘’One heart, one land to worship. It is a slogan that would draw attraction and eventually increase the interest for dis-coveries of peculiarities of the Istrian pe-ninsula. What could a person heading to Istria really learn? For sure, a part of its rich history, geomorphologic features, im-portant places and points of interests, but the mail preoccupation of each traveller will be where to sleep and where to get a good meal. A decision to travel to a certain destination is nowadays linked to escape from everyday life, from cities and closed offices towards nature, a touch of her beauty and scents and flavours that we are keeping inside for a long time, like an elixir of life. These memories and emotions last for a long time.’’ These words mark the beginning of the description of the Istrian region in the 34th edition of the Italian guide I ristoranti d’Italia. This seri-ous, fair and strict guide was designed as the annual meeting of gastronomes who travel together, giving realistic evaluations of restaurants. Stating Istria as an ideal destination, the guide points out for the gastronomy that the served plate discov-ers the innovation based upon the long, rich and original tradition. The Istrian touch dominates everything, in its perfection: the pride for the best wine, the most delicious prosciutto, the inevitable cheese, as well as fish, today accompanied by another genuine Istrian product, the meat of the Istrian boškarin ox, which you can taste in restaurants which have a special licence for serving. And that’s not all. The prolific seasons of truffles and asparagus, mush-room and snail hunting. In Istria, you are welcomed by home-made brandy served with pastries such as fritule, kroštule and dry biscuits for dipping into white wine. It is a triumph of flavours and harmoni-ous living. The guide invites you to learn about the Istrian gastronomic abundance

and its culinary icons, visit the festivals dedicated to wine, prosciutto or olive oil, as well as the Istrian truffles. You will be directed to the chosen restau-rants and typical taverns where you can taste all the dishes stated above; there, you will meet the bond of tra-dition and modern innovations, from forgotten flavours and scents to the latest trends in preparation the most subtle dishes. You have no choice but to set to creation of your personal ad-venture, writing a new chapter in the history of Istrian cuisine.‘’Ein Herz, ein Land zum vergöttern.

Secrets of a delicacyIn the tradition of the Istrian gastronomy pršut is the top and the measure for all the ex-quisiteness, for every guilty of gluttony or overindulgence. But, what are the concealed secrets of such delicacy? Are those to be searched amongst the ability, the attention, the patience, or are those just the weather con-ditions? Perfect computerized dry-kilns are certainly already far from the bura (north-east wind) and the old stone cellars where the Istrian prosciutto matures. So, we are going to reveal you some secrets of this great Istrian pride. Firstly, in the Istrian inner land households, people used to farm just one pig at a time (not dozens like elsewhere, and in that areas the pigs were never brought to pasture), which reached unusual size and weight. The pig was sup-posed to feed the whole family with meat, and especially with the lard, all year long. Believe it or not, that pig had regularly cooked meals based on a mix-ture of various vegetables, to-gether with chaff or meal flour and every kind of stuff found in the house. The pumpkin and the beet were planted exclusively for the pig, and various herbs were also collected in springtime. That is also the reason for the first recognizing mark of the Istrian pršut - it is enormously big. And for that reason, it is particularly succulent. Special experts were able to shape the pršut, then to salt it just a little bit, to drain it slightly off, and after few days to put in apposite wooden cases, pressed by stone slabs of proper weight (neither too light nor too heavy) so to let the meat turn sol-

id and compact. After one week, depending on the weather condi-tions, preferably with bura, cold and clear, the hams would be taken out the case. Then those would be properly smeared all over with a mixture of bay-salt and pepper, together with pieces of desiccated leaves of rosemary and laurel. At that stage the hams are brought to the loft, with the windows wide open (despite the wintertime), to dry at the bura wind, typical for Istrian winters and a blessing for the pršut.

Grape Holiday TraubenfeiertagBuje, 14. - 16.09.Buje is a place of fertile fields and vineyards. It has a one-hundred year old tradition of celebrating and giving thanks for the produce of its land. Local farming traditions are manifested in hundreds of ways during the festivities, while at the same time thanks is given for the soil’s fertility. Gathering in a great allegorical procession, residents and their guests reminisce about work done in the fields, and the harvest-ing and processing of the grapes. They also announce the beginning of autumn activities that take place in the wine cellars. A very interest-ing part of the festival demonstrates how the local wine called mištel was produced according to an old recipe from Buje. This event is the very heart and soul of the festival. Recently, it has been held in St. Ser-vulus Square - renamed the Court of Bacchus for this occasion - in the old part of the town. The proces-sion reaches the Court; the grapes are unloaded into large barrels, and then crushed under the bare feet of young maidens, as in times gone by.

Educational trail Zelenikovac Brijuni National ParkZelenikovac peninsula provides a true geological-paleontological treasury from the Early Cretaceous Period, forming a very interesting educational trail. Apart from dinosaur footprints there are also layers of fossilized shells of the nerinea gastropod, a series of ripple marks of various sizes and bone breccia. Highly-spired gastropod shells usually measure 3-4 cm in height and 10-13 mm in diameter. Some of these are completely preserved, others only in cross-section view. They belong to the Alb Epoch, Early Cretaceous Period. They appeared some 100 million years ago. On their sightseeing tour, guests will learn about characteristic forest stands of Brijuni. They will see dinosaur footprints, witness remnants of geological past of this part of the world, learn about coastal birds living on Brijuni and find out about limekilns and why Zelenikovac was occupied by the army in Tito’s times. All in all, a kilometre full of interesting things.

Escape from the castle It was June 26th 1867 when prisoners in the tower of the fort of Pazin, co conspira-tors Mathias Sandorf, Stjepan Bathory and Ladislav Zathmar awaited their execution after the Austrian court had sentenced them to death. Although they had already accepted their fate, under the acoustic domes of the impressive Pazin Castle, Sandorf heard the sound of people talking. From the muffled language the prisoners realised they had been betrayed! The desire for escape was born, with revenge! They broke down the grate that divided them from the outside world, jumped onto the lightening rod and began their descent along the stone walls... This is how Jules Verne described the events at the Pazin Castle and the Pazin Abyss in his novel Mathias Sandorf, published in 1885.
