ENJOYING AUTHENTIC AND AFFORDABLE RED WINES FROM SOUTHWEST FRANCE AS THE LEAVES start to turn color, and the weather begins to chill, wine lovers begin to again look for affordable red wines to enjoy with fall acvies and with those last meals on the deck. It’s a great me to enjoy the boyishly rusc, slyly charming, very-affordable red wines of Southwest France. DESPITE THEIR FRENCH PEDIGREE, these wines are sll considered “under the radar”, coming from a “lesser known” wine region. Priced under $15 a bole (and oſten found at $10 or less!), these wines are oſten made with indigenous grapes (such as Fer Servadou) combined with the more internaonally known varietals (such as Cabernet). ALONG WITH BOTH Saint Mont and Côtes de Gascogne appellaons that are also known for making great white wines, the following areas represent a good mix of red wine offerings. LET’S START with red wine from a grape that has become increasing popular with Americans – Malbec. Cahors, which is located in the hill country north of Toulouse and east of Bordeaux, is the original home of Malbec, the wine that Argenna made wildly popular. Reds from Cahors tend to be big and spicy. Try a Cahors producer today: Château du Cèdre, Clos La Coutale, Georges Vigouroux, Clos Triguedina or Château Lagrézee Madiran is also known for bold reds primarily made with the Tannat and somemes blended with Fer Servadou or one of the cabernets. Try a Madiran producer today: Domaine du Mouilié, Château Peyros, or Château Laplace Saint Mont’s reds, just now reaching the American market, are similar to Madiran. They are Tannat-based with similar profiles and matching abilies. Try a Saint Mont producer today: Plaimont Producteurs Marcillac, near Cahors, is known for its red wines made chiefly from the pleasantly rusc, spicy and somewhat tannic Fer Servadou (also known as Mansoi in the region). Try a Marcillac producer today: Domaine du Cros Fronton, just on Toulouse’s doorstep, is home of the wonderfully spicy Negree grape, full of tart but juicy red fruit flavors. Try a Fronton producer today: Domaine le Roc or Château Plaisance Irouléguy, a ny appellaon tucked deeply into the French Pyrenees, bordering the Atlanc Ocean, is in the heart of the Basque Country. Reds from here tend to be fruit-forward, yet tan- nic and predominately consist of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvi- gnon and Tannat grapes. Try an Irouléguy producer today: Domaine Brana, Domaine Illaria, Maison Arretxea, or Domaine Etxegaraya PERFECT PAIRINGS Both Fronton Negree and Madiran Tannat are ideal sipping wines served by the glass at pares, as well as food companions at the table. The bigger, darker wines of the Southwest, such as those made with Malbec and Tannat, pair well with hearty fall foods such as beef, wild game, lamb and stews. Lighter reds match perfectly with pork dishes, salmon, pastas with tomato sauce and even holiday turkey. TRY COMFORTING DISHES: Meatloaf, Sirloin/Rib Eye/Short Ribs, over Fingerling Potatoes, Herbs, with a red wine sauce TRY FANCY DISHES: Quail sliders, Medallion of Duck Foie Gras with Black Truffles, Beef Bourguignon, Kobe Beef Carpaccio For more informaon on white wines of Southwest France: www.winesofsouthwesrance.com For samples, imagery, or interviews, contact: Marie-Chrisna Bach Public relaons Manager Sopexa USA 212-386-7416 [email protected] Christophe Logeais Communicaon & Markeng Interprofession des Vins du Sud-Ouest France +011 05 61 73 87 06 [email protected] About: WINES OF SOUTHWEST FRANCE, known in France as the Interprofession des Vins du Sud-Ouest (IVSO), is a professional organizaon of wine producers, cooperaves, and trading companies in the southwestern corner of France. ENJOYING AUTHENTIC AND AFFORDABLE RED WINES

FROM SOUTHWEST FRANCE

AS THE LEAVES start to turn color, and the weather begins to chill, wine lovers begin to again look for affordable red

wines to enjoy with fall activities and with those last meals on the deck. It’s a great time to enjoy the boyishly rustic, slyly charming, very-affordable red wines of Southwest France.

DESPITE THEIR FRENCH PEDIGREE, these wines are still considered “under the radar”, coming from

a “lesser known” wine region. Priced under $15 a bottle (and often found at $10 or less!), these wines are often made with indigenous grapes (such as Fer Servadou) combined with the more internationally known varietals (such as Cabernet).

ALONG WITH BOTH Saint Mont and Côtes de Gascogne appellations that are also known for making great white wines, the following areas represent a good mix of red wine offerings.

LET’S START with red wine from a grape that has become increasing popular with Americans – Malbec.

Cahors, which is located in the hill country north of Toulouse and east of Bordeaux, is the original home of Malbec, the wine that Argentina made wildly popular. Reds from Cahors tend to be big and spicy.

Try a Cahors producer today: Château du Cèdre, Clos La Coutale, Georges

Vigouroux, Clos Triguedina or Château Lagrézette

Madiran is also known for bold reds primarily made with the Tannat and sometimes blended with Fer Servadou or one of the cabernets.

Try a Madiran producer today: Domaine du Mouilié, Château Peyros, or

Château Laplace

Saint Mont’s reds, just now reaching the American market, are similar to Madiran. They are Tannat-based with similar profiles and matching abilities.

Try a Saint Mont producer today: Plaimont Producteurs

Marcillac, near Cahors, is known for its red wines made chiefly from the pleasantly rustic, spicy and somewhat tannic Fer Servadou (also known as Mansoi in the region).

Try a Marcillac producer today: Domaine du Cros

Fronton, just on Toulouse’s doorstep, is home of the wonderfully spicy Negrette grape, full of tart but juicy red fruit flavors.

Try a Fronton producer today: Domaine le Roc or Château Plaisance

Irouléguy, a tiny appellation tucked deeply into the French Pyrenees, bordering the Atlantic Ocean, is in the heart of the Basque Country. Reds from here tend to be fruit-forward, yet tan-nic and predominately consist of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvi-gnon and Tannat grapes.

Try an Irouléguy producer today: Domaine Brana, Domaine Illaria, Maison

Arretxea, or Domaine Etxegaraya
