The 20th IAGG World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics
Invitation01
The ageing of the population is a global challenge facing not just developed countries but also developing Asian
and African countries. As the world’s fastest ageing country, Korea is expected to become a full-blown aged society
as its elderly population ratio exceeded 10% in 2010 and is expected to surpass 14% in 2018. The Korean govern-
ment recognized the seriousness of the ageing society and set up a national committee and long-term strategy
bureau under the Ministry of Planning and Finance.
The Federation of Korean Gerontological Societies is an international research hub federation, comprised of Korean
Gerontological Society, Korean Society for Gerontology, Korean Geriatrics Society and Korean Association for Ge-
riatric Psychiatry, dedicated to sharing the latest interdisciplinary research results, developing counter-measures
and proposing policy initiatives to improve the quality of life of senior citizens. Both at home and aboard, it has
been making strenuous efforts to bring together prominent scholars, professional activists, major policy makers,
business entities and researchers for the joint research projects.
Based on the full commitment and support of the Korean government, the 20th IAGG World Congress of Gerontol-
ogy and Geriatrics held in Korea in 2013 will be a global academic festival of all the countries from six continents
and five islands sharing the latest research results in gerontology and geriatric medicine.
In particular, since IAGG 2013 is held in Seoul, the city boasting cutting-edge information technology in this infor-
mation-based 21st century, it will become an even more significant chance to discuss research results, to develop
measures to boost the quality of life of the elderly, to raise awareness of the aged society and to prioritize important
policy issues for the era of centenarians.
Under the main theme of ‘Digital Ageing: A New Horizon for Health Care and Active Ageing, IAGG 2013 is expected
to contribute greatly to introducing and developing the senior/welfare industry through special exhibitions on is-
sues related with the elderly, various exhibitions on the senior/welfare industry, programs on elderly culture expe-
rience and visits to rehabilitation facilities for the aged.
We ask for your active participation and support for the successful hosting of IAGG 2013 so that it can successfully
lay out the right direction and vision for the aged society and thus contribute to the future development of society.

The 20th IAGG World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics
03Significance of IAGG 2013
International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG) has 70 member organizations and provides con-
sulting services to the UN and WHO in policy making for the aged society. It is by far the biggest global academic
institution on ageing, gerontology and geriatrics that has 45,000 individual members from about 70 countries.
Since its establishment in 1950, it has held World Congress every three to four years and Regional Congress (Asia
Pacific, Europe, North America, South America and Africa) discussing overall academic issues on aging, gerontology
and geriatrics.
The 20th IAGG Seoul World Congress will be the first academic congress held in Asia for the first time in 35 years
since the 1978 Tokyo Congress and the conference of this size is unlikely to be held again in Korea for the next
hundred years.
More than 6,000 global experts, scholars and service providers on ageing, gerontology, geriatrics and social poli-
cies for the elderly will be attending the Congress. Meanwhile, there will be several UN, WHO and NGO conferences
held prior to and after the Congress in Seoul, giving Korea a chance to promote its welfare policy initiatives to pre-
pare the country for the aged society.
Hosting IAGG 2013 in Korea, a country that experiences the most acute aging trends in the world, is highly mean-
ingful in the following aspects.
1. As many globally-renowned scholars are likely to participate in the Congress, IAGG 2013 will serve as a high-
level academic congress on gerontology and geriatrics.
2. Particularly, IAGG 2013 will be a great opportunity to initiate academic and policy discussions on the aged soci-
ety and to earn global recognition for its policies on the elderly.
3. In addition, it will also serve as a unique opportunity to raise awareness on the aged society and to bring about
the necessary paradigm change
4. It will promote and develop the elderly-friendly industries.
4. We can also share developed countries’ research progress on gerontology and geriatrics with other countries
around the world through IAGG 2013, broadening the horizon of academic exchanges on the aging-related issues.
