  • I welcome warmly all the participants of FEI World Cup which takes place in Kazakhstan.

The degree of the responsibility before Federation Equestre International which entrusted the conduction of the competitions of the top level to Kazakhstan is very high. These competitions open a direct way to the riders of our region to Olympic Games which are truly the symbol of friendship, beauty and aspiration for physical perfection.

Equestrian competitions and love for horse have deep historical roots in our homeland. I wish all the participants were worthy successors of these wonderful traditions.

Let the spirit of generosity, mutual understanding and unity among sportsmen and countries rule our competitions.

President of the Republic of KazakhstanNursultan Nazarbayev

I am so pleased to welcome you, on behalf of the Fdration Equestre Internationale (FEI), of which I am proud to be President, to the CDI3* and CSIO 1*-W. To the dressage competitions and jumping show. Asia is one of the fastest growing regions for horsesport and it gives me the greatest possible pleasure to watch that development first hand. The growth of the sport is in no small part due to the hosting of competitions such as this. They provide a fertile landscape in which athletes and horses can watch the development of the continent's emerging talent.

We thanks the Kazakhstan National Federation, organising committee, officials, volunteers and spectators without whose support, dedication and enthusiasm these competitions could not take place and wish you all a most enjoyable event.

To all the participants once again this year I send my very best wishes for success and enjoyment. I hope you realise your ambitions, and that you continue to strive to achieve new targets in the years ahead. May this event be conducted in a spirit of friendship and camaraderie between opponents, and dedication to our greatest ally without whom our sport would not exist - the horse.

    MESSAGE FRO THE SECRETA

    RY G

ENERAL MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY GENERAL

    OF EQUESTRIAN FEDERATION OF KAZAKHSTAN

The last year was an important and complex full of events and results. However all that happened was not spontaneous, but part of the program being consistently implemented. But first things first. One of the key events of 2013 were the events held in

Astana, in particular the FEI World Cup, President's Cup that has traditionally become an essential one, Central Asia Show Jumping Championship and also for the first time in Kazakhstan Endurance event CEI 3* (160 km). Intense equestrian, first week of July, gave the expected result our team has been qualified for the FEI World Equestrian Games.

Besides competitions and contests, an important part of the development of sport is a aducation of coaches, riders, veterinarians, judges, grooms and another professionals, especially in such a difficult discipline, as Endurance. It was a focus of the two international seminars for judges and veterinarians. The seminars attracted more than 50 experts from different countries. They were also attended by representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, represented by Vice-Minister Issaeva Gulmira Sultanbaykyzy and Chairman of the Committee for Veterinary Control and Supervision of RK Taytubayev Mereke Kusainovich. The seminar for judges was led by Halvard Somerthes from Norway, for veterinarians by Mr. John Mcewen, the First Vice-President of the Federation Equestre International (FEI), and Graeme Cooke, FEI Veterinary Director. The workshop primarily enabled the experts to gain new knowledge in the format of FEI requirements, as well as the status of international judges and international veterinarians. During the negotiations between the leaders of FEI and representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture there were reached agreements, which in the near future would enable to create in Kazakhstan free veterinary quarantine zone, which would fundamentally solve the issue of participation of athletes throughout Central Asia in international competitions held in Europe.

Two three-star international dressage competitions (CDI3*) that took place in June and September last year in Almaty identified perspectives of preparing our riders to the FEI World Equestrian Games.

Future Asian Games of 2018 suggest the possibility of inclusion in the program of such sports as endurance and tent-pegging. While with the endurance the prospects of our country are quite defined, and a good basis for the successful development of this kind is provided, with the tent-pegging it is just the beginning, and not only in Kazakhstan. On October 27 in the Oman capital Muscat for the first time in the history of equestrian sport there was held the first constituent Assembly of the International Federation of Tent-Pegging. Thus, there was created International Tent-Pegging Federation, and President of the Equestrian Federation of Oman Mahmoud Bin Eisa was elected its President. At the conference there was established the structure of the Federation, and board members as well as a technical committee were elected. The conference was attended by representatives of 23 countries

The FEI General Assembly of 2014 was marked by some watershed events, especially for the countries of Central Asia. Montreux is a small town with a big history on the shores of the Lake Geneva. Since 2013, there has begun a big Olympic history of small Central Asian federations. Eight years of intensive discussions and solicitations initiated by the Federation Equestrian Kazakhstan finally changed the system of Olympic Qualification and made a geographical amendment that will allow the Central Asian countries (Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan) not to knock on a closed door of the European Championship, but take their place according to their geographical location in the qualifying group G among the Asian continent that not only corrects the geographic inequities, but in accordance with the Olympic Charter gives for the Central Asian countries a long-awaited chance to get the Olympic licence to the upcoming Olympic 2016. In 2015, for the group G will be organized a special event, where there will be played out an Olympic licence for the Asian continent.

Another major event of the General Assembly was the decision to convene an FEI Extraordinary Assembly, the agenda of which was introducing amendments to the charter of FEI, allowing to extend the authorization of the President of FEI for a third term. This decision was unanimously approved at the Extraordinary Assembly in Lausanne.

The start of the season of 2014 has been successful for our team. Brilliant performance by endurance team at the World Military Endurance Championship in Dubai among the brought in a fifth (Sergey Buikevich) and ninth (Natalya Dolgikh) places. The Championship gathered athletes from 28 countries.

A joyous event was the establishment of a Para-Dressage team in the East Kazakhstan region, in the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, which successfully debuted at the competitions in Moscow.

Undoubtedly the main objective of 2014 is a participation of the team in the FEI World Equestrian Games. The international dressage competitions, held in Almaty in May and June of current year were devoted to this objective. For the first time in the national history two full teams of Kazakhstan on endurance comprising: Natalya Dolgikh, Azat Koishiev, Esenaman Koishiev, Sergey Buikevich and on dressage comprising: Janetta Bauman, Sergey Buikevich, Natalya Urkievich will go to the FEI World Equestrian Games in Caen (France). The season 2014 will be completed with a major event of every four years participation of the dressage team in the Asian Games in Incheon (Korea). We wish our athletes successful performance in major competitions of the planet.

FEI SPORTS FORUM OPENING SESSIONS FOCUS ON EVENT CLASSIFICATION AND ARENA FOOTING

This is one of the most important meetings on the FEI calendar, because this is where we hear first-hand from the people who are most directly involved in running our sport, she said. We need your help to ensure that decisions made at the General Assembly are grounded in reality.

This forum comes at an exciting time for our federation. The extremely successful London 2012 Olympic Games showed our sport at its best in an iconic venue before a massive global audience. We are building on that momentum with new sponsors and the excitement provided by a new generation of emerging equestrian superstars. With help from FEI Solidarity, our sport is developing in new regions.

The Sports Forums first session focused on the Jumping Event Classification System (ECS) with FEI Executive Board member and Technical Committee chair John Madden (USA) as the keynote speaker. The panellists were Ludger Beerbaum (GER), four-time Olympic champion; Peter Bollen (BEL), equine nutritionist and President of the International Equestrian Organisers Association (IEOA); Juan-Carlos Capelli (ITA), Vice-President and Head of International Marketing of Longines; Jacky Delapierre (SUI), Founder and CEO of Athletissima, Lausannes annual athletics sporting event which is part of the IAAFs Diamond League; Jon Doney (GBR), FEI Official and course designer; and Carl Spencer (USA), management and market research consultant.

John Madden briefly reviewed the background of the ECS, which was first introduced for Jumping in 2010,

FEI President HRH Princess Haya welcomed more than 300 delegates to the third FEI Sports Forum, which opened at the prestigious IMD business school in Lausanne (SUI) today. Addressing delegates from 70 National Federations, representatives of the FEI Associate members, experts, guests, FEI Bureau and Technical Committee members, and FEI staff, the FEI President stressed the importance of the annual Sports Forum in her opening address.

with the long-term goal of evaluating all Jumping events according to a standardised template of objective criteria. The concept was discussed at the inaugural Sports Forum in 2012 when delegates agreed that the prize-money-only system currently in place for grading events did not encourage event organisers to improve their facilities, as excellence was not rewarded.

After some fine-tuning of the evaluation template, a new ECS was trialled in spring 2013 at Western European League events of the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping series. The system took into account all the factors that contribute to a top event, including the level of the competition and venue facilities.

Madden identified the three essential goals of the newly developed system:

    The collection of useable feedback for organisers and FEI Headquarters based dupon clear, concise standards;

    a streamlined cost- and time-effective evaluation system which engages all enthusiasts;

gathering information through systems already in place for ease of implementation.

He then presented the proposed ECS strategy, including the collection of the existing officials reports, draft schedules, and host agreements which will be incorporated into a manageable FEI reporting data base. A scorecard for the event would then be produced and sent to the event organisers for feedback.

The appointment of account executives for FEI series to be involved in the data collection process, and the implementation of an early warning system, open to all data collectors, through which the relevant FEI HQ departments could be speedily alerted if serious problems were encountered at an event, were also presented, and the actions to be implemented before, during, and after the event were outlined.

Carl Spencer of market research provider KS&R, presented the current status of the ECS, based on information extracted from existing documents. He stressed that data

collection would not be transformed into an independent activity but would be conducted through existing channels, and highlighted the importance of automation and the use of online facilities. Next steps in the ECS development were identified as the review of the implementation protocol and timetable, the automation of the officials reports, and the finalisation of the scoring system.

Ludger Beerbaum, commenting on behalf of the International Jumping Riders Club (IJRC), encouraged the FEI to implement the ECS and emphasised the importance of strategic forward thinking. We need to think where our sport wants to be in 20 or 30 years, he said. We should consider a long-term vision and never let our connection with the Olympic Games out of sight.

Delegates from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Poland, and Saudi Arabia discussed the pivotal role of the NFs and their involvement in the evaluation system, the need to avoid duplication of tasks, the weighting of the scores attributed to the facilities for the horses, the involvement of grooms, the use for developing nations, the need for simplicity and feedback.

FOOTING FORMULA Brand new rider-focused research was detailed by Professor Roepstorff, based on views from more than 350 riders in warm-up and competition arenas at 10 4- and 5-star events in 2013, resulting in over 600 footing feedbacks.

Ludger Beerbaum, who also featured on the Footing panel, took part in the research. Footing is our primary daily concern, he said. Its vital that we have the best possible ground for our horses when were training at home and when we travel for competitions. When the footing is good, our horses are healthy. Getting the footing right is already complex, and were also training and competing in different climates outdoors and indoors throughout the year.

4 Ongoing research into footing is key to prolonging the careers of our horses. I and the other riders who have taken part in this research all feel that major advances have been made in understanding footing, and well continue to be part of further studies.

Now, thanks to extensive scientific knowledge and data collected on footing by our global experts, and this latest valuable rider research, the FEI is able to provide clear guidance on the specifications and maintenance of footing for working areas and competition arenas to the entire equestrian community, said John McEwen (GBR), FEI 1st Vice-President and Chair of the FEI Veterinary Committee.

This will have an extensive impact on horse health and performance, and represents a major step forward for riders and stable owners. Organisers will also benefit from having very specific details on the best formula for footing at major events.

FAR-REACHING INITIATIVES ANNOUNCED AT ENDURANCE ROUND TABLEThe FEI today announced bold steps that will ensure improved protection of the welfare of horses in Endurance events, proposing unprecedented athlete penalties for equine injuries, extended rest periods and increased accountability.

The welfare of the horse is not just a veterinary issue, its an issue for all those who work in the sport, FEI 1st Vice President John McEwen and chair of the FEI Veterinary Committee said.

Proposed rule changes relating to officials accountability and responsibility, increased protection of horses through athlete penalty points and extended rest periods, appointment of Independent Governance Advisors (IGA) and improved conflict of interest regulations received wide support from attendees.

There was also wide support for the new FEI Endurance Codex, which the Endurance Committee has produced to cover Endurance officials, and separately Endurance athletes and registered trainers. The Codex, which defines responsibility, accountability and sanctions for those in breach of the Codex, already exists for FEI Veterinarians. The rules changes will be circulated to National Federations for final review prior to going before the FEI Bureau at its in-person meeting on 9-10 June for approval and immediate implementation.

Roly Owers, Chief Executive of World Horse Welfare, also voiced his support for the GEIS and improved monitoring. The need to make evidence based decisions is so important for equine welfare and I fully support the FEIs injury surveillance programme, he said. Notwithstanding the limitations on data from national competitions, I would urge National Federations to provide data to the GEIS and for the FEI to use all its influence to make that happen.

Brian Sheahan, chair of the Endurance Committee, voiced the opinions of everyone attending the session. I would like to see increased completion rates, reduced injuries and illness in the horse, and better course design. To maintain the integrity of our sport, we need a reduction in doping, improved compliance by athletes

and trainers and improved rule enforcement by officials. This sport should demonstrate the highest standards of sportsmanship in a fair and equal competition. And may the best combination of horse and athlete win.

PRINCESS HAYA SIGNALS INTENTION TO STAND FOR RE-ELECTION AS FEI PRESIDENTHRH Princess Haya today signalled her intention to stand for re-election as FEI President following an overwhelming vote in favour of amending the FEI Statutes to allow FEI Presidents to serve three consecutive four-year terms in office. The vote on amending the Statutes to prolong the term of the FEI President took place at the FEI Extraordinary General Assembly (EGA) in Lausanne (SUI) today, with 103 National Federations voting in favour of the amendment. There were three votes against the amendment and no abstentions. The EGA also voted in favour of applying the same term to all FEI Bureau members.

Princess Haya had stated in September last year that she would not stand for re-election, despite an earlier move by FEI Regional Group Chairpersons and the National Federations to amend the FEI Statutes at the 2013 General Assembly. Following Princess Hayas statement, the amendment proposal was removed from

the General Assembly agenda, but a petition signed by 100 National Federations during the meeting in

Montreux (SUI) called for an EGA. As a result, the EGA was included in the timetable

for this weeks two-day FEI Sports Forum, which got underway yesterday at the International Management Development Institute (IMD) in Lausanne.

I always felt that when people are given a responsibility, given faith and given belief they are given an opportunity to do well in their

lives and thats what youve always given to me. I cant tell you how much

I appreciate that, its a huge honour, a visibly moved Princess Haya said,

prompting further prolonged applause from delegates at the meeting. Im very honoured for

the opportunity youve given me to be available as a future president of the FEI for a third term. I dont want to go further than that today because I do believe theres the possibility that therell be other candidates and I believe they should be given the opportunity to come forward. But at the same time you have my commitment to you.

At her first meeting FEI Bureau meeting after her election in 2006, Princess Haya proposed limiting FEI Presidents to two four-year terms, a reform which was later adopted as an FEI Statute. Todays vote reverses that decision, but still limits the Presidential term. Previously the FEI Presidential term of office was unlimited.

The FEI Presidential election will take place at the General Assembly in December. The FEI Bureau will decide on the application period for Presidential candidates during its in-person meeting on 9 and 10 June. The Swiss National Federation has already announced its support for Swiss businessman and former President of the Geneva CHI, Pierre Genecand, although his candidacy has yet to be officially declared.

Todays EGA also unanimously supported the creation of the FEI Olympic Council. The Council, which was proposed by the FEI Bureau in February of this year,

We need to think where our

sport wants to be in 20 or 30 years.

will be a more permanent liaison between the FEI and the members of the Olympic Family with an equestrian background in order to protect the place of equestrian sport in the Olympic programme. The Council, which will be chaired by the FEI President, will include all IOC members and honorary members with an equestrian background, the chairs of the FEI Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing Committees, the FEI Secretary General and other representatives invited by the FEI President. The full composition of the FEI Olympic Council will be announced shortly.

SUSTAINABILITY AND IT INITIATIVES FEATURE AT FEI SPORTS FORUM The FEI Sustainability Programme and the proactive sustainable steps that can be taken at equestrian events around the world were detailed by Dr Harald Mller (GER), FEI Director Education and Standards, to open the afternoon session of the FEI Sports Forum 2014. The new FEI Sustainability Handbook for Event Organisers, circulated during the session and also available online, encourages organisers to implement sustainability initiatives based on their own set priorities to help reduce negative environmental impact and create positive legacies.

Sustainable sporting events are a major priority for organisers and the network of organisations who help make these happen - governments, sponsors and the communities in which the events takes place to name just a few, Dr Mller said. Equestrian events are unique in many ways, and are also very different to each other based on geography, existing infrastructure and financing, but they do have one thing in common: sustainable action can be taken at every event. The FEI Sustainability Handbook is designed to highlight how, and also what proactive measures can be taken in the future.

The FEI will introduce several sustainability initiatives, including an interactive web platform, which will include a knowledge database and diverse sustainability benchmarking tools to enable event organisers to work together with the FEI and with each other on development.

Respect for nature has always been integral to equestrian sport through its connection to horses and the outdoors, FEI President HRH Princess Haya said today. The Sustainability Handbook for Event Organisers gives us a solid framework to improve and expand our efforts to protect the environment and ensure that equestrian events create a lasting positive legacy.

ONLINE ENTRY SYSTEMThe FEI Online Entry System, the single platform that enables Organising Committees and National Federations to process the entries of athletes and horses to manage results more efficiently, was reviewed in the second afternoon session.Gaspard Dufour, FEI IT Manager, highlighted the key system developments and outlined areas for further improvement with the National Federations.

FEI Sports Forum delegates were invited to give feedback on how the system has facilitated their work and discuss ways in which it could be further improved. Justin Provost (USA), Director of Information Technology at the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and panelist for the session, highlighted the benefits of the FEI Online Entry System and underlined its importance against the backdrop of increasingly busy competition schedules. The system gives us important athlete information at our finger tips, and is very easy to use, which is vital for our busy athlete services team who, on a yearly basis, are dealing with the needs of thousands of athletes, he said.

  • Just four horse-and-rider combinations produced double-clear rounds today, and they earned the top four places, with Longines World No. 1 rider, Great Britains Scott Brash, slotting into third while Germanys Marcus Ehning just missed the

podium in fourth place while Guerdat lined up fifth. When I went into the second round I knew I had

to be clear and you see could at fence number one I nearly knocked it straight away! But I got my concen-tration and tried very hard, although I have to admit I was happy when I was finished! said new Longines FEI World Cup Jumping champion who has brought the German tally of wins in this series to ten.

WITHDRAWALFollowing the withdrawal of joint-leader Patrice Delaveau from France yesterday, Guerdat was heading the leader-board on a zero score as the competition began. However just six points separated the top nine, leaving no room for error.

Guerdat started on a zero score, while Deusser was carrying two points after the first two competitions fol-lowed by Switzerlands Pius Schwizer (Toulago), Beer-baum (Chiara) and defending champion Beezie Madden from the USA (Simon) with four apiece. The Nether-lands Maikel van der Vleuten (VDL Groep Verdi) and Germanys Christian Ahlmann (Aragon Z) were next in line on five while Ehning (Cornado NRW) carried six into todays decider.

DEUSSER HOLDS HIS NERVE TO CLINCH LONGINES TITLE 21 April. Daniel Deusser steered the 11-year-old stallion Cornet dAmour to victory in todays Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Final 2013/2014 at Lyon, France, pipping fellow-German and former FEI World Cup champion, Ludger Beerbaum, by a narrow margin. For 32-year-old Deusser it was a real test of nerve after moving into pole position at the end of the first round after Olympic champion, Switzerlands Steve Guerdat, lost his grip at the head of the leaderboard.

  • Course designer, Frank Rothen-berger, tested them in both rounds but the quality of jumping was ex-ceptional. As he said tonight the day to me was perfect, we didnt see big mistakes, just faults on the verticals and the back poles of the oxers.

Ehnings spectacular first-round clear ensured he would move up the order as did Brash when doing likewise, but Ahlmanns chances were dashed by a refusal at the first ele-ment of the double at six and a total of 12 faults. Van der Vleuten was penalised for his pace with just a single time fault while Mad-dens hopes of retaining her title were undermined by a pole down at the middle element of the triple combi-nation at fence eight.

Beerbaums clear was followed by a mistake for Schwizer at the oxer three from home, but when, sec-ond-last to go, Deussers stallion produced another flaw-less performance then all the pressure was on Guerdat. And the Olympic champion made it all the way to the penultimate oxer before Nino des Buissonnets got too deep and caught the front pole on take-off. His grip was gone, and he went into round two lying second and on level-pegging with Beerbaum carrying four faults, while Brash was close behind still carrying five. Deusser was now out in front.

    STRONG PACERothenbergers first-round test had

been stiff enough, with t]he triple combination quickly followed by a double of verticals and a strong pace required to keep inside the 76-seconds time-allowed.

Second time out the time was set at 72 seconds which was also a brisk enough pace over another

13-fence track which began with a tall vertical followed by two big oxers

and a left-hand turn to a vertical at four before the triple combination at five. The

front element here proved the bogey in this round, the yellow pole falling eight times.

Van der Vleuten was removed from contention here, but both Brash and the 13-year-old mare Ursula and Beerbaum and his 11-year-old mare Chiara left all the timber in place to keep the pressure on the final two. And the crowd gasped when Guerdats Olympic gold medal winning gelding fell foul at the triple combination in an otherwise foot-perfect run.

As Deusser started out last to go you could hear a pin drop, so the noisy rattle of Cornet dAmours hooves hit-ting the top pole of the first fence led to a big intake of breath around the arean. But as all the top riders all know, luck so often plays its part even at the biggest moments, and when the fence stayed up then Deusser steeled him-self for the remainder of the course. There was another touch at the second element of the double at fence nine,

  • and the pair arrived very deep at the following vertical, but this would be Deussers day as he cleared the finish line to a wall of applause. His big smile told the full story.

FIRST BIG SHOWHe has been riding Cornet dAmour since June 2012, and in their first big show together at Spruce Mead-ows in Canada they jumped double-clear in the Nations Cup. However the horse was injured in November of that year and out of action for two months. In the end the break was maybe good for him because he came back out in February last year to win the Grand Prix at Welling-ton in Florida. We had a great year in 2013 including fin-ishing fourth in the Grand Prix of Aachen! said Deusser about his experience with the horse that also claimed the German Championship title at Balve before taking team silver and fifth place individually at the PSI FEI European Jumping Championships in Herning, Denmark last August. Clearly this was a partnership on a mission. Yet the Ger-man hadnt banked on going to the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Final until winning the Western European leg qualifier at Mechelen in Belgium in December.

I didnt ride at Oslo (NOR) or Helsinki (FIN) but I start-ed in Verona (ITA) and had one down in the jump-off. It wasnt until I won at Mechelen (BEL) that I started to get enough points to come here, although if you told me before I came here that I would win the Final I wouldnt have believed it! But when you have a good horse you al-ways have a chance said the rider who collected his last qualifying points at the World Cup qualifier in Wellington, USA. Second-placed Beerbaum said tonight he was really happy, I came here as the very, very, very last rider from the reserve list, it was a rush to get here because I only knew I was coming a week ago. My horses were planned to go outdoors and they came here with no training for indoors so it is hard to believe the way it has worked out. The whole week could not have been better, and well done to Daniel, his performance with his horse the whole way through was incredible I have no problem to be second to that well done!

Third-placed Brash said If I knew before I came here that I would finish third I would have been very happy! On the first day I had the last fence down and it really cost me, after that we would struggle to get on the podium so its nice to be sitting here today! Ludger and Daniel were fantastic today as usual!

QUOTES:Frank Rothenberger, course designer Congratulations to all the riders. Normally I need to be ahead of the riders to make a good competition, this time the competition was excellent with perfect conditions, including in the warm-up, and the feeling was great with this big arena which was like being in outdoor! Sylvie Robert, Event Di-rector we had a full house today and I am delighted. Thank you to all our partners, the FEI who entrusted us with these Finals, and a special thanks to Longines. Also thanks to the rider and owners, to Frank (Rothenberger) and to the staff and volunteers. Daniel Deusser GER, talking about his horse Cornet dAmour He has a good character, is easy to ride inside or outside and its pos-sible to add in or take a stride out with him, hes careful and that helps him to win a Championship like this! Scott Brash GBR It is my first World Cup Final and I wasnt familiar with the points system but its basically the same as the European Championships and the most consis-tent horses and riders win. My horse jumped fantastic all week. Daniel Deusser GER I have always had a good feeling in Lyon, it is always a fantastic show, everyone wants to come back here.

CONGRATULATEDFEI Jumping Committee Chairman, John Madden, con-gratulated the riders and show organisers. This is a fan-This is a fan-This is a fan-tastic venue and at the end of the day I have a feeling of deep appreciation and gratitude for all the teams that al-lowed us to enjoy fantastic sport. Im happy to represent the FEI, and also very much appreciate the people who produced such a fine event, like Longines who brought the prizemoney up to the right level for this type of cham-pionship and the riders of course.

Walter von Kanel, President of Longines, who at-tended tonights post-competition press conference said Longines is committed to equestrian sport, sincerely and long-term. I want to congratulate the FEI, the staff, the riders, and Im very proud to be sitting next to the Longines World No. 1 Scott Brash! I was pleased to see that the riders put the welfare of their horses first.

Lyon is the third city in France, but in terms of eques-trian sport I think it is number one! I will go back to Switzer-land with great memories of everything I have seen here in Lyon this week he concluded. As will the new Longines FEI World Cup Jumping title-holder, Daniel Deusser.

  • DUJARDIN AND VALEGRO DANCE TO REEM ACRA GLORY/ FREESTYLE 20 April 2014. World No. 1, double-Olympic and European champion and the rider who holds all three world records in the sport, Charlotte Dujardin, became the first-ever Briton to win the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage title at Lyon in France today.

To the strains of a newly-created musical score she steered Valegro, the horse that has taken her to the very top and beyond over the course of the last two spectacular years, to a mark of 92.179 that left her well ahead of defending champions Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW from Germany in second place. The Netherlands Edward Gal and Glocks Undercover revealed more of their in-creasing potential when slotting into third ahead of Swe-dens Tinne Vilhemson-Silfven and the elegant Don Auri-ello in fourth.

But it was Dujardin and Valegro who owned the stage and clinched the coveted Reem Acra trophy after receiv-ing a standing ovation from the crowd. Im over the moon, coming here to my very first World Cup Final its so fantastic! This was my first time with my new Free-style and it was so much fun, this music is great and it was so emotional its all you can ask for...a dream come true really! the new champion said.

RISING STARRising Dutch star Danielle Heijkoop, who celebrated her 27th birthday last Wednesday, set the first strong target when sixth of the 17 starters into the arena. Riding the 15-year-old Kingsley Siro she produced a much more impres-sive performance than in yesterdays Grand Prix, the geld-ing settling to his job to post an impressive 77.946 which would eventually prove good enough for sixth place.

Russias Inessa Merkulova opened the second half of the programme with 73.786 from the gracious 10-year-old Trakehner gelding Mister X whose easy passage was complemented by lovely passage toward the end of his programme.

The Netherlands Hans Peter Minderhoud then followed with a great presentation from Glocks Johnson TN who posted 77.625 before Germanys Jessica von Bredow-Werndl went even closer to Heijkoops leading score with 77.768 from Unee BB.

TOP OF THE LEADERBOARDBut it took Swedens Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven and Don Auriello to demote Hei-jkoop from the top of the leaderboard. The World No. 4 rider and her elegant bay set off with the most extrava-gant extended trot and powered their way into the lead with a score of 80.946. With three left to go that was now the mark to beat, and third-last in, Gal and Glocks Undercover did just that, maximising their points po-tential with strong and consistent piaffe although, as the 2010 champion admitted afterwards, a bit of a muddle towards the end

saw him lose a rein which hampered his final sequence. He (Undercover) was still a little too excited, it was

difficult warming up in this environment, he was too over-active and in end (of his test) I lost my rein! the Dutchman said. His score of 83.696 was immediate-ly overtaken by the penultimate partnership of Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW, but the defending champions temporarily lost communication at the begin-ning of their test and their eventual score of 87.339 fell short of expectations.

Langehanenberg remained stoic however. I had two mistakes today, and two is too many. In between I had a great feeling but I took risks and when you take a risk then anything can happen. On the centreline we didnt start together, but thats the way it goes but Im abso-lutely happy! the 2013 champion insisted.

DOOR WIDE OPENThat left the door wide open for Dujardin and Valegro whose presence alone sets hearts beating a little faster. There was enormous curiosity about their new musical score, put together by Tom Hunt using the soundtrack from the Dreamworks animated film How to train your dragon. And it proved delightful, with Valegro dem-onstrating all his hallmark grace, balance, strength, obedience and lightness along with no small measure of personal charm as he cruised through passage and canterwork that was joy to watch before finishing with a daring final piaffe/pirouette. The crowd loved it, and roared their approval at the end, while the Ground Jury responded with the winning mark that left the British duo almost five marks ahead of last years winners.

I had only ridden the test twice at home so I wasnt as confident as I would be with my other music but I defi-nitely think this is better than my old music. We were just messing around at home when I came up with the idea of the piaffe/pirouette at the end which is technically dif-ficult but, being the super-star he is, Valegro can do it!

    said Dujardin afterwards.

SOME WEEKENDIt has been some weekend for the 28-

year-old who yesterday broke her own world record score to win the Grand Prix.

She talked about the importance of her new Freestyle music and floor-plan this evening. I think it really is story telling and you know, it really

highlights his (Valegros) highlights, his powerful extended canter, it really

kicks in for that and obviously the end was the piaffe/pirouette... I was thinking

today, what if we make a fluff of it! You think

The crowd loved it, and roared their

approval at the end, while the Ground Jury responded with the

    winning mark.

  • its all a good idea until youve actually got to do it in there and youre like uh-oh, what if it goes wrong but thankfully it didnt and what a superstar Valegro is, said Great Britains first-ever FEI World Cup Dressage champion as she proudly grasped the prestigious Reem Acra trophy.

QUOTESDr Jean-Michel Roudier, Ground Jury President: The competition was exceptional, from start to finish it was a very high level. The draw was a coincidence (winning rid-er Dujardin drawn last), but it hinted at the places on the final podium. Sylvie Robert, Event Director I couldnt imagine anything better than the Olympic champion in number one spot, last years winner in second and Ed-ward Gal in third. You were wonderful, as were your hors-es!. Trond Asmyr, FEI Dressage Director: Ive been to all the last Finals and we had never had any group of riders of this level on the podium. We have also had some young horses here who are still developing in a very good way and we look forward to seeing them later this year they can go on for many years to come, so its very exciting. Charlotte Dujardin, GBR: Im very excited to be here and Id like to thank Reem Acra and of course Carl (Hester, her trainer and mentor) and Roly (Luard, co-owner of Valegro) for all their help and support. This has been a special show and to have the crowd behind us was very special Ed-ward Gal, NED: Undercover was still a little too excited, it was difficult warming up in this environment, he was too over-active and in end I lost my rein. I know I can do much better so Im now looking forward to the next time! Helen Langehanenberg, GER when asked about creating the

Draw for the first competition. FACTS AND FIGURES

Great Britain's Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro, who alrWorld No. 1, double-Olympic and European cham-pion, and the rider who holds all three world records in the sport became the first-ever British rider to win the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage title at Lyon in France today.

The 28-year old rider performed a new Freestyle to music from the Dreamworks animated film How to train your dragon.

Going last in the Freestyle Final she posted a score of 92.179, pinning defending champions Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW from Germany into second place.

Third spot went to 2010 FEI World Cup Dressage champion Edward Gal from The Netherlands riding Glocks Undercover.

17 horse-and-rider combinations lined out in to-days finale to the 2014 Reem Acra series.

The only other British rider ever to stand on the po-dium at the FEI World Cup Dressage Final is Chris-topher Bartle who finished second with Wily Trout behind Swedens Anne-Grethe Jensen and Marzog at s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands in 1986.

choreography for Freestyle: You start with the highlights and build it up, fitting it to the music so you create a little story that fits with the music, then you come down a little again before introducing more highlights. Helen Lange-hanenberg, GER: Im not disappointed at all about second place at the World Cup Final. Yesterday I thought I could have had higher marks but today we made two mistakes and that was it. We (herself and Damon Hill NRW!) are both human after all, and it happens!
