BUILD UP TO A BLOW UP

• Most British colonists were content with life in the American colonies.

• In many ways, they experienced more freedom than they had ever known in Great Britain.

• Even though the colonists still had to follow the laws passed in England by Parliament, the colonists were allowed to make their own laws.

• Colonists knew what worked best for the colonies, where life was very different than it was in Great Britain.

BUILD UP TO A BLOW UP• However, colonists did face

a major problem with the British government.

• Colonists were not allowed to vote in British elections.

• That meant that they could not elect representatives to Parliament to speak and vote on their behalf.

• This was a problem when the king and Parliament made laws that did not represent the best interests of the colonies.

BUILD UP TO A BLOW UP• Following the British

victory in the French and Indian War, Great Britain took over many French lands in the Americas.

• Colonists were happy that they would be able to settle more lands to the west.

• However, King George III issued the Proclamation of 1763, which stated that colonists were not allowed to settle any of the newly gained lands west of the Appalachian Mountains.

BUILD UP TO A BLOW UP• In addition, the cost

of the war and keeping British soldiers in North America to protect the new lands was very high.

• King George III and Parliament decided that the colonists would help to pay these costs.

• Parliament passed a series of taxes and laws that added fuel to the already annoyed colonists’ fire.

THE SUGAR ACT

• The Sugar Act of 1764 was passed to raise money to pay for the cost of keeping soldiers in North America.

• This act forced colonists to buy only English sugar and molasses.

• Colonists would also have to pay high tariffs on products that came from other countries.

THE QUARTERING ACT• Parliament then

passed the Quartering Act in 1765.

• This act required colonists to provide quarters to British soldiers in North America.

• The colonists also had to provide food, fuel, and transportation to the troops.

THE STAMP ACT

• Next, Parliament passed the Stamp Act in 1765.

• This new tax law required colonists to pay a tax on items printed on paper.

• Taxed items included newspapers, pamphlets, licenses, and even playing cards!

A stamp on the paper showed that the tax was paid.

THE STAMP ACT• Once again,

colonists were angered at another law that they had no say in passing.

• They did not want to pay extra for items they used everyday.

• Colonists wanted to show the King and Parliament that they were very unhappy.

STAMP ACT CONGRESS

• Representatives from nine colonies met in New York in October 1765 to discuss the Stamp Act.

• They agreed that since colonists were British citizens, they had a right to vote on taxes through elected representatives in Parliament.

• However, since colonists had no one to vote on their behalf in Parliament, the Congress agreed that it was not fair for Great Britain to pass taxes that colonists would have to pay.

THE STAMP ACT• The King and

Parliament did not expect such resistance from the colonists.

• They knew that they could not make the colonists obey the Stamp Act.

• Parliament repealed the Stamp Act in March 1766.

THE TOWNSHEND ACTS • Parliament believed

that they did have the right to pass taxes on the colonists.

• To show the colonists this, beginning in 1767, they passed the Townshend Acts that taxed imported items to the colonies, such as glass, lead, tea, paint, and paper.

• The colonists’ responses:– Once again, the

colonists protested by boycotting British goods.

– Some colonists wrote and distributed essays to say that taxation without representation was against British law.

• Colonists were also upset with the British soldiers who lived in their cities and towns.

• Colonists disliked the way the soldiers treated them.

• The relationship between colonists and soldiers got worse over time.

THE BOSTON MASSACRE• In Boston, relationships

between colonists and soldiers were very bad.

• On the night of March 5, 1770, a fight broke out between a crowd of colonists and British soldiers.

• A British soldier thought he heard the command to fire his weapon and shot it into the crowd.

• Other soldiers panicked as the crowd moved closer, and they fired their weapons, too.

• Following the Boston Massacre, Parliament repealed all taxes on the colonies except for the tea tax.

• Tea was a very popular beverage.

• In response to the tax, many colonists boycotted tea.

• The boycott hurt the largest British tea company so Parliament passed the Tea Act of 1773.

• The act made it so that only the largest British tea company could sell tea to the colonies.

THE BOSTON TEA PARTY• On December 16, 1773, a

group of colonists disguised at American Indians went aboard British ships carrying tea in Boston Harbor.

• The men opened 342 crates of tea and dumped it in the harbor.

• After dumping the tea, they cleaned up the mess aboard the ships and left. No one was hurt.

THE INTOLERABLE ACTS• The king was furious at the colonists!• In response to the Boston Tea Party, Parliament

passed several laws called the Coercive Acts to force colonists to obey Great Britain.

• Colonists called them Intolerable Acts because they would not accept them.

• One of the Acts was the Boston Port Act, which closed Boston Harbor until all the dumped tea was paid for. The King sent a military governor to be in charge.

• Meanwhile, colonists from other colonies sent money, food, and supplies to Boston since no ships could come in the harbor.

• In September 1774, delegates from every colony except Georgia met in Philadelphia to discuss their complaints against Great Britain.

• Members of the First Continental Congress wanted to keep the peace, but they also wanted to fight against the Intolerable Acts.

• They asked the King for the same rights as British citizens. He told them no.

• Before they could meet again, the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired.
