Ethernet의 적용영역을 가입자 망까지 확대하여 Ethernet을 가입자 또는 최대한 가까운 거리까지

포설하여 Ethernet을 일반가입자에게 제공하는 것을 목적으로 함

표준화 일정

• IEEE LAN/MAN Standard Committee(LMSC) 산하 802.3 WG은

2000.11 Plenary meeting에서 EPON표준을 위한 EFM SG 결성을 승인

• EFM SG는 2001년 1월의 첫 SG 미팅을 포함, 3번의 Plenary 미팅과 3번의 SG미팅을 통해

3월에는 PAR과 5 Criteria가 802.3 WG의 승인 받음

• 2001년 10월에는 NesCom과 STB의 정식 PAR로 승인받아 TF가 구성

• 2001년 7월 meeting부터 sub-track별 활동 시작

PON (Passive optical Network)

광 가입자 망 구축 방식

DSL의 전송거리, 약 5km이내 PON 시스템의 전송거리, 최대 10~20km

光 Cable 상에 Passive Optic Splitter 사용하여 하나의 OLT가 여러 ONU

Burst Mode IC

Agere에서 Burst Mode IC의 필요성에 대한 주장이 제기됨.

PMD(O/E with TIA, LD Driver)에 대한 상세 규격에 대한 논의 시작됨. : 수신감도, 버스트 처리 시간 등

PON용 MAC : 기능 구현 접근 방법이 업체에 따라 다름.

PHY Layer 수용방식(Cisco, Agere)

- PHY layer에서 PON 구조 지원 기능 수용

MAC layer 수용방식

-Broadcom 사 제안
