A key feature of Collective Adaptive Systems (CASs) is that they comprise many units/nodes, which have their own individual properties, objectives and actions. Decision-making is distributed and possibly highly dispersed, and interaction between the units may lead to the emergence of unexpected phenomena. The units can be highly heterogeneous (computers, robots, agents, devices, biological entities, etc)
Evolutionary Properties: properties concerning the evolutionary nature of CASs, e.g. open-ended (unbounded) evolutionary systems, the trade-off and interaction between learning and evolution, and the effect of evolution on operating and design principles.

EU-FP7 ICT Genetic and Evolutionary Computing相關領域 On-going projectProject Title Symbiotic evolutionary robot organisms (SYMBRION)
Start Date 2008-02-01 Expiry Date 2013-01-31
Research area Pervasive adaptation
Project description
The bio-inspired evolutionary paradigms combined with robot embodiment and swarm-emergent phenomena, enable the organisms to autonomously manage their own hardware and software organization. In this way, artificial robotic organisms become self-configuring, self-healing, self-optimising and self-protecting from both hardware and software perspectives. This leads not only to extremely adaptive, evolve-able and scalable robotic systems, but also enables robot organisms to reprogram themselves without human supervision and for new, previously unforeseen, functionality to emerge. In addition, different symbiotic organisms may co-evolve and cooperate with each other and with their environment.

Robotic eEvolutionary self-programming and self-assembling organisms (REPLICATOR)
Start Date 2008-03-01 Expiry Date 2013-02-28
Research area Cognitive Systems, Interaction, Robotics
Project description
TThe REPLICATOR project focuses on the development of an advanced robotic system, consisting of a super-large-scale swarm of small autonomous mobile micro-robots that are capable of self-assembling into large artificial organisms. These robotic organisms possess common energy and information buses as well as reliable legged, wheeled or climbing locomotion, based on modular sub-systems which can be autonomously reconfigured. Thanks to the heterogeneity of the elementary robots and their capability to share resources and communicate, the robotic organisms are able to achieve a large computational power, and rich close- and far-range sensing.

Case 3 Project Title
A neuro-dynamic framework for cognitive robotics: scene representations, behavioural sequences, and learning. (NEURALDYNAMICS)
Start Date 2011-04-01 Expiry Date 2015-03-31
Research area Cognitive Systems and Robotics
Project description
1. Endowing robots with cognition is a long-standing and difficult objective. Substantial progress in cognitive science and neuroscience has led to the insight that cognition is tightly linked to the sensory and motor surfaces, and that cognition emerges during development from relatively low-level mechanisms when situated in a structured environment.
2. Building on basic functions such as detection and selection, we will develop a set of elements of cognition and techniques for combining such elements, allowing us to scale towards such cognitive capabilities as scene representation and sequence generation. We will implement and evaluate these elements of cognition in scenarios inspired by the development of cognition in early childhood.
