Dear Friends in Christ January 1 7kI pray your new year has begun well. Both your world inAmerica and mine in Ghana are full of problems but thank God forour hope in JesusThe post-vacation testimonies of some of our students oughtl i t you up as they do us. Noah Nee-Whang we tease him aboutbeing Chinese, but he s not joyfully told how that after preaching a gospel sermon at a funeral, a wife came and asked to be baptized without the knowledge of her husband. They were both paganand she feared his opposition. The evening this was done, thehusband came quietly and asked Noah to baptize him without theknowledge of his wife. His id.fe worshipped idols, he said, andwould object to his baptisml So now that couple is one in theLord and can help one another in their stand against juju.William Okletey was happy that scripture he had learned at theleadership conference concerning a godly home had enabled him tor efoncile a man and wife in his congregation who had been havingtrouble for a long time. We also rejoiced with him that the chiefof-^ village where he had preached twice and converted 10 peoplehad invited him to come back and establish a congregation there,: The leadership conference was conducted by Dick Kostetter andChristian Adjei at Ada-Foah. Eight congregations were representedin the 30 - 35 people who attended regularly. The reaction to theteaching and to the question and answer periods was excellent.Another man in Accra has obeyed his Lord in baptism as a

direct result of the radio program and another convert. He waspresent in our worship service last Sunday evening..The last few years, we have given the scholarship students asum of money weekly to feed themselves either by cooking or bybuying from the many foodsellers on the roadside. There i s potent ia l here, but w e l l wait and see what theLord and the people do.After the service t h a t day, we drove to a nearby sett lementfarm to look around and came to re aliz e th at ray emergency brake wasjammed on. We found a f i t t e r in a nearby town and . s a t i n the shadefor two and a hali hours while he charged the battery which wasalso dead) and after waiting for the wheel to cool, disconnected thehand brake and the cable so we could drive home. e arrived safelyat the college in the middle of the evening service, instead of be-fore dark, as we d planned, -We ha d enough of a gasoline shortage i n November and Decemberto help us appreciate what you are going through. We too, sat inl i n e s hoping t h e r e would st be some l e f t when t was our t u r n .The shortage was blamed on the mid-East war, but Ghana favours theArabs and she gets her o i l from Russia, so I think there was someother reason. In Accra, we are back to normal, but the fresh supplies have not penetrated the northern and outlying areas yet. Analumnus in the north wrote tha t they couldn t get kerosene for thei rlamps.

We completed our f i r s t term i n November and had t h r e e weeks o fclasses in the new term before holidays. We now have eight studentsl e f t in the f i r s t year classfinances and family responsibilitiesbeing the chief reasons for the dropouts. Just before holidays, wea l l enjoyed a party with games, filmstrips and food I After a longbout with the flu, Doris Rife stopped coughing long enough to singtwo carols with the mixed q u a r t e t .I enjoyed a week s t r i p with Hostetters over the holidays to agame park in northern Ivory Coast and then to Abidjan, the capitalcity so modern i t s called the Paris of West Africa. We spentChristmas Day in the game park and saw warthogs, hartebeasts, manymany animals in the deer and antelope families, baboons, hippos through binoculars) and a gorgeous big python. The snake layquietly i n the water watching us with l i f t e d head while we tookpictures. Then he s l i d quiet ly away.Thank ^ou for the many many cards, and gifts of food and moneyI r ec eive d. All three made i t a happy holiday.May the Lord bless you in 197U and may you be more aware eachday of the reality and power of, Christ in your lives. Pray for us

March l | l iDear Fijiends in Christ,

Let me tell you the good news quick Missionaries havfe beenexempted from the ,000 cedi ^ien employment tax. All of us'weretogether Friday evening March l th, and Ron told us he had sLnthe announcement in a small article in the back pages of the oaper.we thank the Lord- and we thank you for your prayers. 'On March 10 I enjoyed a trip to a village near Ada. (Ican't sp^ll it and I cant pronounce it. Ayoung Christian fechoolteacher has a Bible Club there, and he invited;, me over to teach agospel lesson, with special attention to baptism. This is thfevillage where the chief and elders refused to have a church. Mr.Goleka is with these children in school and wants to win themiforthe Lord. Some of the children attend church in nearby villagesbut some go nowhere. ^ ^ n ui ^ ?cember we took 20 of our Bible dub children theri formchl and games. home v illage fo r some coccmitB and then on home. W e got back justin time for o\ir own evening Sunday School and worship. After talking about them and working on them for eightmonths, the song booklets have been completed This was arevision and an enlargement of the one I made 3 or years ago.The new edition has English choruses, Twi, Ga, and Ewe hymnsand choruses (called shoute )^ and a few shouts in a couplemore languages. Another helpful change i s the addition of anindex. Sometimes the vernacular spelling of Jesus is a J ,sometimes a and sometimes an I , f you know which i t isfor the song you want, you' re in business. The f i r s t Friday in March, we had a special musicalchapel inaugurating the song booklets. t was a singspiration .including our old favorites, the demonstration of a couple ofthe new songs, some special music by the mixed quartet and thewomen s t r io , and the recitation of scripture passages ofpraise. Some of these l a t t e r were given in the vernacularlanguages also. 'The Student chaplain, and the senior perfectshare the song-leading privileges with me. We echo the dedication prayer that the song booklets will bring glory to God and -be useful to His Kingdom. The other day a shocking headl ine greeted us in themorning: -premium petrol had increased in price from 70j pesewasper gallon to one cedi twenty pesewas. That is a 70 increase. We have no shortage now as you suffer from, but that priceincrease is unexpected. As usual, the Ghanaians suffer themost. All their transport costs, even the crudest mami^y lorryride, have practically doubled. A ride that a few months ago^cost them three pesewas now costs ten. n the salaries theyii3^e, this is difficult. Food costs \n.ll follow, I m afraid,as the market women have to pay the higher transport costs, too,^ Food costs had ^ready increased a lo t and the food program of the school is expensive. In fact, the college has spentmore ifl.the last three months than has been received by ourtreasurer in the States. That is not a good state of affairs .You have been generous in your support, so I have asked rnyforwarding agent, Mrs. Barkes, to send f i f ty more dollars amonth fo r the col legeThere is a choice road front corner lo t right next toour college property, that we want to buy very badly. W ewould use i t to build a chapel. t would be a sad thing i f apetrol s ta t ion or drinking bar got tha t land. We have t r ied

Many interesting things- hav.e happeried in the las t monththat I want to share with you. Today is jihe -nexi to the last dayof our Easter vacation, and after I finish, this li must tend to. lessonsThe Churches of Jesus, two Christian Churklies, and anotherindigenous church held their Easter convention in \ town just 20mles away. He had thhad the women - abont 30. of., than. The pre^.cher s wijlated for me used two languages; this really slows tlbut there is nothing to be done about it unti l someGhanaians know one language. ^ The .women seemed to listen well enough^ altho ugh some wereobviously sleepy. Since the previous evening's se.rvice had lasteduntil midnight, and they had risen about 5* I wasn't surprised. The sepond^ hour was spent in questions ^nd answers. That is wheretheir real intbrest showed, and their questions on family relationships could have been the same as, those Raised in the States. Ireal concern was how to interest iheir children in the Lord. for the college, one is an pld man whose opportunities lie in witnessing tomembers of his extended family and the night student is s t i l l in the GhanaNavy. Pray for a l l of them that they will be able to withstand the wiles ofthe Devdl arid, be able to souls and establish churches and support themselvesand their .^am^ies.We were pleased that the sun actually shone for the occasion. We are inthe middle of Jbthe. j'giny sp-a^on and the weather is always a questionable iwitteraOur guest speakerwas a preacKer from Takoradi; his message was very practicaland down-to-earth. Music was brought by local church choirs, the college mixedquartet and part of a former college men's quartet. ^ _The closing weeks of school were marked by an unusual number of cpjpblei^.'^Mr. Ad;^ei says he thinks the Devil attacks with severity every year when he seesthat school is nearing the completion of another year of service for the. Lord.A studerrt'we had readmitted with a severe warning after he had missed finalexams second term announced abruptly to the faculty one day that he was leavingthe school. His reason was that he.was accepted at another seminary. The realrea5gn_fchatisurfaced a few days later was that he, too, like a former fr i^dwas headed for service in Ghana's Army. His attitude and action really hurt.Yet another situation was the l^g^dj^icent to the. college that I havementioned before. When a man started to. bring cement blocks to the site at arapid rate our hearts sank. Upon investigation, we found out that the familyfrom whom we had been trying to buy i t for many months did not own i t afterThe local chief was selling at least part of the land to the block-bringer.Our spirits drooped as we sought an interview with the chief. Time and againMr, Hostetter and Mr. Adjei went to his house only to meet his absence . I tturned out all right in the end, but you can see how the inter im was a burdenon ou r h e a r t sThe students were not unaffected by these situations^ they planned apeexal three nights of prayer. The fi rst two nights were devoted to variousneeds and problems, and the third night emphasized thanksgiving and victory. The last was held at midnight to set i t apart from the ordinary. I enjoyedthem all especially the third. Learning to give thanks always for alljbhingsi'JLs a grace to be sought. ~

We thank God that at last the men were able to communicate with the chiefj^d the parcel of land directly., in front of the school building has been sold.to us after all. The lol is still quite full of the other man's blocks, but thepapers ^ e in the name of the college. There is enough extra money in ny sere funds to pay for the land in full. I thought I wouldn t do again, but I v e done i t l Waited two and a h a l f monthsbetween newsletters. But maybe you were on vacation part of the time and di dn tno t i ce _ _t r typewriter ribbon is a brand new black and red one. t is for working onthe catalog cards for the library, Hostetters' forwarding agent, Eloise Grant,a professional l ibrarian, visited t h i s month arjd. gave me l o t s of advice and anoffer o f continuing aid by mail. Kent Taylor ha s taken on a four hour courseoriginally assigned to me, giving me a t .least eight more free hours weekly. So, iry excuses of tm e and know-how have been taken away. I .have finallyadmitted to myself that this term is nearly a now or never opportunity. Ass o o n as I f i n i sh t h i s news le t te r . .Yes, we have, finished two weeks of our new school year. The faculty had agreedto abolish a l l fees except a one- ti me t went y cedi entrance fee for freshmen. We would also limit the food program to meals from Monday .evening to Fridaynoon. ; In this way, i t would still require plenty of faith and struggle tofeed themselves on weekends, and perhaps more weekend preaching would result. The problem of non-payment of fees would also be avoided. There are probablymany tests yet to come, but le t me share the fi rst one with you.Of fourteen first year students accepted, four came, and only one of those hadthe ^uU twenty cedis. The others had good reasons fo r not having it- andsincere, promises-to pa y by the end of the month. Should we s t i c k - t o ou r wordand r i s k having no. freshman c la s s ? Or believe and t rus t them and then sendthem away i f thay failed to pay? Our i i n a l decision was to le t them knowthat we firmly believed our school was worth borrowing or begging for, and thatas a token of their own sincerity and determination, they must find the moneysomewhere before^they started. After a kind and firm explanation, Ihe threewere sent home with a maximum of three weeks to find the money. This wouldencompass thisir own end-of-the-month promises. As of now, two are back withsatisfactoiy arrange^ients, a new man came with his full fees, and a fifth hasbeen accepted who will be able to provide much-needed help in the office.Another has come over the weekend with half his fees (case undecided yet andthere is s t i l l the fourth original man who has unt i l October 1 to return. about this. Pray for Noah Nee-\^fhang th e evangelist. Pray that God will raiseup leadersin the existing churches, in our college, in the new groupswhocan shepherd these flocks without depending on foreign support. Pray fo r th eleaders of th e Churches of Jesus Christian Churches, and others that we workwith, that they will learn stewardship of life and money and that they willhave a vision of th e los t beyond their own congregation.Speaking of stewardship, Christian and I have continued our teaching/preachingprogram in th e churches. VJe have completed i t in two and are nearly finishedwith a third. The demonstration tithing Sunday in the f irs t two resulted inlarger than usual offerings as expected; the real t e s t will come in the monthsahead If i t helps a t a l l we w i l l be encouraged. The t h i r d church is tha t in Dzebetato. Those women are so e n t h u s i a s t i c andjoyful in their worship that I can t stay quiet long. This last v i s i t event he c hi ef who is a Christian, was singing and clapping and praying. Previdmsly,he appeared to be more of a spectator. The chief s daughter gave a testimonyabout her and her children s and otherChristians praying in the field fo r a boywho had been bitten by a scorpion. At l a s t th e pain stopped. Another testimonycame from a woman who is one of two wives of a pagan. She told how she hadencouraged the other w if e to be unafra id Th e husband t r i es to dra w them backinto their old ways. The other wife was in th e service also. The testifyinglady was gust alive with joy and faith. When t h i s group has one more window frame, they ca n finish th e walls and w ill beready for the roofing. There is so much encouraging there bu t the.preacher iswavering because of h is need fo r money. I believe th e Lord took us t h e r e onthat particular Sunday. Christian was able to counsel him very lovingly andseriously about an intended course of action that may have weakened th e church. He came to th e college two days later with a changed mind, and he was furtherwarned and encouraged and given a testimonial that may help him ge t a teachingjo b in his own area. Pray for him and the church.Joseph Nsiah, our newest faculty member has begun his night extension classesin Takoradi. At last report he had thirteen in his English-speaking classes,^ d four in a Twi-speaking class. The most sfirimjs hindrannft to b-is mimg .Tyis the lack of suitable living quarters. They ar e very scarce. He is st i l lsharing a bedroom with a man whose wife is temporarily away. He needs a placeof his own for concentrated study and for privacy and relaxation. This and that2 Our V.B.S. was very successful numerically. We had I63 childrenon th e first day and over 300 on the fifth day. As director most of my work wasdone before and after but I did enjoy leading the music and presenting themissionary stories on an alumni in the north of Ghana. We regret that therewere no decisions to accept Christ as Saviour bu t pray that the Word taught willbring forth fruit yet. . . We assume the land we have paid for is ours, but thelocal chief is delaying the papers we need to carry th e purchase through the civilgovernment. We ask God to work His w ill in this matter too. . . I enjoyed aweek of re a l away-from-it-all vacation on the banks of the Volta River. Anotherlady and I enjoyed canoeing, swimming and reading and picnicing,. We went outtwice in th e moonlight, singing hymns so th e villagers wo\ildn t mistake us forsmugglers. . . David and Barbara Kalb became the parents of a baby boy, DavidWayne, on July 12. David is in graduate school a t C.B.S. I t will be fun to havea baby in the m ission fam ily again.

May I wish you a very Merry Christmas, f u l l of th e jo y of being j o i n t h e i r s withthe Son whom God sent to us i n the f lesh so long ago. May your New Year beginwith thanksgiving for the l i f e God has given us and with earnest prayer for Hisguidance for our own l ives and for t he count ri es where we l ive. The year 197^wil l see the beginning of a furlough for meabout the middle of July. After a peak of nine f i r s t year students, we now have eight. They have had twoopportunit ies to sing outside the col lege. The church planting venture i s proceeding slowly. Dick Hostet ter and Noah Nee-Whang visited the chiefs and leaders of two villages. (At this f i r s t meeting, thet ea ch in g p la n with the goal of establ ishing a church i s explained. Then theleaders must make a decision and l e t t he evangel is t know.) One village decidedYes , and the teaching has j u s t begun. P ra ise th e Lord The second vi l lagedecided No . Very short ly a f t e r the v i s i t from our men, two big t ruckloads ofJehovah's VJitnesses descended upon the town. The r e s u l t was confusion in theminds of the people, and they decided not to have a church i n t h e i r vil lage.Noah contacted a th ird v i l l a g e as he wants to do two a t once, but a t t h i s wri ting I do not know i f he has defini te word. Satan i s against i t though. Noah's wife had a baby g i r l about f iveweeks ago. Having had a p e r s i s t e n t case of TB, she was not strong, but eve ry th ingwent a l l r i g h t . Martha, Noah's wife, suffered a l a c e r a t i o n on her forehead and had t o s tay i n t h a t v i l l a g e fo r s ev era l days while healed. Then j u s t a week, ago, word came to Noah a t the school that his twoyear old son had died. Now they are l e f t with the two l i t t l e g i r l s . Pray f o r themt h a t they w i l l go on strongly i n the work, i n s p i t e of t h i s sorrow. Martha'sparents are not Christian. Christian and Ifinished up our stewardship teaching there one week and went again two weeks laterfor a harvest (fund-raising) service for their bjiilding. Their t i thing demonstrat ion offering was very good. Francis i s such an enthusiastic interpreter, that Ialways f e l t as i f I were teaching something really interesting. I took fivepeople for t he harvest . One of the students preached in Ewe; none of the r e s t ofui^ from Accra could understand i t . I t s bette r fo r the people themselves that way, though. They had erected a bamboo shelter for the occasion, and i t was packed. Many visitors came from other churches. The 'offering was 77 cedisnot as large ason previous occasions. Maybe that 's whysevieral women had a hard time keeping awake during the f i r s t week's teachingI paused three times for a song to be sung to help them wake up. This is a veryuseful,Ghanaian custom On our way home the fi rst week, the manifold came in two,so we roared home like a ten ton truck. The second week, strangely enough, we weregiven coconuts to eat, but no meal. But the third visi t made up for everything.I wasn't feeling very optimistic about their demonstration offering. But I wasjudging by the slowness of the interpreter rather than the power of God's Word. They brought an excellent monetary offering plus a huge quanity of foodstuffs astheir t i the: eggs, tomatoes, peanut butter, bambara beans, onions, okro, kenkey, and on and on. This was j u s t two weeks after their own fund-raising harvest, so

i t truly showed a willingness to give. They seemed to take special pleasure inbringing thfese fruits of their labors. They gave us lots of things to bring homeand fed us a big meal besides. Mr. Djumah asked us to write the congregation aletter after some time to encourage them again in the ir giving*The land we have bought is still a source of concern. The man who bought theparcel next door is apparently st i l l trying to get i t by hook or by crook. Whilebuilding on his own land, the delivery trucks crossed the empty lot without permission. That's not so bad. It s when they turn around on the school lawn, leaving deep ruts behind, and stack the new blocks and dump the sand and gravel onour lo t that things begin to ge t sticky. Three times th e workmen were askednicely to please use the stack of blocks nearest the volley ball court first sowe would have more room to play. That's the stack, they left t i l l the very lastHow long do we turn irhe other cheek? This man is notorious for grabbing, more andmore land, often leaving legal owners with empty hands. The chief s surveyorgave us the site plan, so we put up a t-enous wire fence and began work on anenclosing wall Our neighbor went to th e police and charged us with forcibleentry; he wds claiming t he land even though th e ch ief and hi s eld ers had warnedhim more than once to stop causing trouble as the land was not his. They eventhreatened to take away the plot he had bought and make him remove his buildingSince he has taken i t to the police,, the matter has to be settled with the^fi aswell as with the chief. Our excellent la>^er tells us not to worry, that the landis ours because we paid for i t . I'm telling you all these details so you can prsQTwith fuller knowledge. Land ownership is a difficult matter to decide with th eshift between traditional methods and modern personal ownership. nd when agreedy, dishonest person is involved,' it s worseI May the land belong to theparty of God's choiceJ (Our neighbor brought a policeman one day to arrest .the mason who was digging the trench for the .wall. At last he brought out hisI D. card. I t had expired in 19721)After a summer vacation our children s Bible Club got off to a slow start. Oneafternoon, two of the boys, one student and I tramped around Abeka calling on theformer members. That, plus the beginning of a new play, gathered them togetheragain. The play took many long and frustrating practices. Only at the very lastrehearsal was everyone present. Except one boy who had the chicken pox OneFriday we had Bible Drama night at the college. The children did their play well.Only once chLd they-get-starteT3 on the wrong sceneT Foira~change7~abo\it^6r^F~7parents or adults came. With the students and college faculty, we had a very niceaudience. Then the college students did a- pantomime of the Good Samaritan. Theyeven had a donkey, a student donkey, that is covered with a brown beadspread. Itwas an enjoyable evening, but I need a long rest before we start another playIBecause of inflation, our food program is costing nearly the same as last year, even though we are feeding the men fewer meals. With a new staff-member, and theexpansion of th e church planting work, our money is tight. You have been sofaithful in your support. When I first came back, my financial report often hada surplus. Now we have bought the land, and all your support is needed regularly.Thank you f or helping- us in this way.
