OROT Y EUNSON NEWSLETTERDear C h r i s t i a n F r i e n d sHere we are in a new year of service for th e Lord. May t he Lordg iveus strength, wisdom to manage ou r time, and more love as we go about our work.Since I have not written since August, some of you do not even know about f i r s tterm in the college. e reopened the middle of September with 52 students. Allthenmen^were crowded i n t o the new hostel They used a wtndowlessr unf in ished s ta^ funit for their kitchen and dining f a c i l i t i e s . They used traditional bathing andt o i l e t f a c i l i t i e s unt i l j u s t before Christmas when the showers in the new bathhousebecame operable. Now there are two flush t o i l e t s and even the roof has been poured.I t is strong enough to support a big water tank that we hope to buy some day Twoo f th e s t a f f f a m il i e s a ls o l i v e a t t h e new s i t e . The four women were housed i n t h ef o r m e r m e n s h o s t e l .David, as Academic Dean, had us well-organized for r e g i s t r a t i o n . I t was encouraging to see so many students coming with their book fe es ready. The amount may seemr id icul ou s to youabout 12.00 per termbut for them, i t is a sizeable sum ontop of feeding themselves. I t is also a considerable help to our budget.y class load i s not heavy7 hours f i r s t term and 8 hours second term. I amsupposed to use my extra hours working on the l ibrary, bu t I must confess that mychurch work o ften gets more attention than the l ibrary. Eight student l ibraryhelpers did an excellent job supervising during l ibrary hours. Some preprintedcards I ordered from the Library of Congress in July f inal ly arrived by sea inDecember. Not exactly the swif t s erv ic e I had expected. Guess we ll have to paye x t r a f o r A i r M a i l .Firs t term was also plagued by much i l l n e s s . A good number o f studeitts sufferedfrom malaria, so ou r student/carpenter made some more s cr een doo rs . Our house-helper s wife suffered from an unknown i l l n e s s t h a t sapped her strength for morethan a month, and a l l three children came down with malaria and severe coughes.Faith Couch and her Dad also had combinations o f malaria and something t h a t gavelab symptoms of typhoid and hepati t is . Then David got pneumonia on top of that .At long l a s t everyone seems wel l except David. About every three weeks his malariar e c u r s . He i s s t i l l under the d o c t o r s c a r e but each recurrence seems m i l d e r .The main event o f t h e Christmas break was the church convent ion which Abeka hostedright here this year. I was in charge of accommodation and was pleased to line upa school across the street and a few private homes to supplement college f a c i l i t i e sAs i t turned out, most of the people preferred to crowd into the college. One ofthe most popular spots for the women was the library floor; (the l ibrary has twoceiling fans). A good number of men slept on tables or benches in the chape l,and then went to the men s hostel for bathing and dressing. I had four women andt hr ee c hi ld re n stay with me.e hired a canopy to use in an open lo t beside the new hostel and hired extrabenches to supplement our own. I t was much airier than our chapel and gave neededroom for all the dancing. I t was the best attended convention in some years. There are now th ree u rban chu rche s t h a t tend to dress and behave a b i t d i f f e r e n t l ythan the village churches, so we are all going to have to practice love fo r each

Some of our Abeka young people worked l ike troopers all during the convention;cleaning, setting up, song leading, running a book and Bible table, and runningerrands. Sunday morning I drove the truck and three of them went with me to fivedifferent places before we f inally collected enough extra benches for the morningservice. Then i t was also the youth who taught and supervised 75 children in ourchapel fo r three hours (me, too) while the ordination service and communion service were going on a t the convention s i te . That evening the youth put on theChristmas story as a play using the Twi language. Deb and I helped with cos tumes. They also won second place in the Bible quiz.Deb and I gave a Christmas party for the faculty and s taff children two days beforeChristmas; 18 in a ll and most of them under 8. Christmas Day began with a worshipservice a t the church and con tinued with a del ic ious turkey dinner with f r iends .Then from the 26th to the 31st my Mennonite missionary f r iend and I went to thebeach for a re s t . I had to mark exam papers and prepare grades, but I did get areal res t and change. On the 31st , the church had i t s annual Watch Night service. That is a strong t radi t ion so i t was well attended and very l ive ly . I was privileged to give one of two 15 minute talks. With an in terpreter , i t had to be about 8.Back in October, I gave up my responsibi l i ty of planning the monthly church scheduleof preachers, song leaders, chi ldren s teachers, etc . Since two former helpersmoved on to other f ie lds o f s er vic e, the st rain of making sure every one was informedand ready was too much. Mr. Adjei and three other people are doing i t now. I ams t i l l occupied with Saturday visi ta t ion, supervision of th e Prayer Partner planfor new members, help ing th e cho ir l ea rn hymns, and preparing the announcementsfor Sunday morning. We had two simple weddings in the church since I l as t wrote. The vows were saidby the couples after the morning worship service. They both chose to exchangegold rings. Both couples were nicely dressed , bu t not with any special weddingclothes. One of the couples furni shed bread , a chocola te drink and a local traditional corn drink (not moonshine ) for the congregation. The other chose to prepare a meal for only family and very close frineds. Someday, someone will comealong and insis t on wearing a white gown, but I do my best to discourage i t . Inarreconomy where gett ing enougn to ~M t~ is o ft en a struggle ,~thTt~cloesn t~^emthe wisest way for a young couple to spend money. The Hostetters are enjoying working with their four church-planning students. Theyhave also bought a much needed used Isuzu Trooper fo r visiting the vil lage..Enochwas finally able to persuade his wife s family that he was capable of taking careof his own daughter, so she has lived here since September and is thriving. Shewill be two in March and is a full member of our compound kids . . .Christian isalways busy as principal, teacher, and church cha irman, but enjoys the color TVhis sis ter bought for him when he was in th e States.. .My truck earned a new set oft i res in November and I had my 50th birthday the same month. . . l i fe continues tou nfo ld w ith God in con t ro l .Pray for the health of David Couch and Christian Adjei in particular. Please prayabout our personnel situation after Couches terminate their missionary service inAugust. Ask God to provide the necessary teacher o r teachers that will providebalance in our total efforts . Thank you for your loving concern.

OROTHY EUNSON NEWSLETTERDear C h r i s t i a n F r i e n d s ,Another long silence i s now being broken. The Lord blessed Ghana Christ ian Collegewith two peaceful, but ext remely busy terms. This school year closed with graduat ion on July 16; there were eight diploma graduates and two degree graduates. Sincethe graduates themselves condemned th e sprinkling of cologne and talcum powder thisyear, the ceremony was joyful but calm. The only extraordinary thing was the factt h a t the power was o f f , so t h a t the band and Christ ian singing group t h a t hade l e c t r i c guitars and amplifiers could not use them. However, they had played forthe end of school party Friday night and nearly shattered our eardrums i t s OTonly in America), so I wasn t altogether sorry for the si tuation. Students, faculty, and s t a f f were a l l exhausted and welcomed the end of the school year. We pray God sblessings and guidance for the ten young people going out to serve. A nice surprisewas the presentat ion to me of an a t t r a c t i v e batik wall hanging to mark 20 years ofservice with the college. After a busy week winding up t h e i r personal and college a f f a i r s and supervising construction up unti l the day befor e they l e f t , the Couches l e f t Ghana a f t e r eightf r u i t f u l years o f s er vi ce . They will be sorely missed. In January we asked you topray about the future personnel s i tuat ion of the college. Your prayers and ourshave been answered: David and Barbara Kalb, who s erved with the college in the 70 s ,are coming back to serve again. Brian Jennings, from the B r i t i s h Churches o f C hrist ,is also will ing to come and teach in the college. We praise the Lord for thedecisions of these people and pray that He will help them ra ise the necessaryre so urce s to enable them to come. At t h i s t ime , none o f them has a s e t date f o rarr iv ing; they will probably come sometime a f t e r Christmas.Joseph Nsiah has been named by the Board as the new Academic Dean. John Dadzie,Administrative Assistant, will add the r e s p o n s i b i l i t y of Treasurer to those hea lr eady has . The college is also hiring a student as part t ime account s clerk tosupplement the work done by a part time accountant.Something unusual in my l i f e occurred since I l a s t wrote. My fa ther had a recurrence of cancer l a s t f a l l and wasn t expected to l i v e unt i l Christmas. At the end of May, the Couches and I paid a long-overdue vis i t to Jeff andSherrie Hostetter in Sunyani. We had time to discuss our work in Ghana, getacquainted more with their environment (they have a lovely, big grassy yard),worship with the Sunyani Christian Church, and take part in the graduation ceremony for the f i r s t four students to complete Jeff 's nine month Practical EvangelismProgram. Our old friend Kwame Afakule was married in July in Sunyani. We were unable to gobecause i t was the last weekend before exam week, but several young people fromthe church were able to go. e is now in Togo looking fo r a place to live: thisis a step to carry out his goal of working fo r Christ in his own country. The Christian churches planning meeting in Yeji was cancelled. It was just too biga trip fo r a school weekend. There were several regional Easter conventions while Iwas in the States. Now we a re planning a no th er restructure discussion in August. In March th e local church put its shepherding plan into action. Twenty-fourshepherds each look after and visit eight members or families once in every twomonth period. We haven't reached that perfect goal yet, but I m confident thattogether we are making a lo t more visits than the previous four member visitationgroup did. I have eight women and girls who are my sheep .This very weekend (July 29) the church is also having a two night outdoor crusade--the f irs t in several years. There have been two all-night prayer meetings (Iattended only one) and also a day of fasting and prayer in prepara tion . The allnight prayer meetings begin at 10 p.m. and continue until 3:30 a.m. They are amixture of songs, scr iptures , prayers, sermonettes and testimonies. I did fineuntil 2 a.m. Then I.took the two elders home and when I got back at 3 a.m. them os qu it oe s in th e ch ap el were thicker than ever and I had a hard time concentrating. Some people had been slapping all evening. We closed with a l ively, prayer andhand-shaking circle everyone circles the circle ), so we went home in good spirits. To our del ight , tha t afternoon at 4 p.m., s evente en people gathe re d to go from houseto house in the area of the proposed crusade to inform and invite people. All ofthis preparation is done with the prayer that God will bring many into his kingdom. We know i t is not the only way of soul-winning, bu t i t is one way that s t i l l works.Enoch is very, very happy to have hi s w if e Lydia here fo r a six week visit . She hasto do three weeks of practicals in the military hospital while she is here. She andher two year old daughter are gradually getting re-acquainted. Lydia has one moreyear of training in Leningrad, Russia. On September 1, we will make the last payment on the loan we got to pay fo r the newproperty. This whole school year the men have enjoyed th e use of the new hostel ,and from about Christmas on, th e new bathhouse. Now the walls are up for the additions to two staff units, and we have enough money on hand for the roof. Half ofsome memorial gifts for my father will also go t oward this renovation. The otherhalf will go t owar d i mprovi ng the chapel. Then we have a l i s t of needed work: anew septic system at Enoch 's house , a new roof for Couches house, water storagetanks at the men s hostel, wiring, plumbing, etc. It is pay as you go for us. We aremost grateful for the special gifts for the new property. We maintain a building fundfor land purchase because we need space. There is a piece of land across the roadfrom t he co ll ege and th e family is anxious to sel l but the man whose name is on thepapers is unava ilab le in Niger. God can do what man cannot. Pray with us .
