E Q U I P M E N T
- Percussion player uses bows, mallets and sticks
- Zither/Piano/Electric Guitar player uses bike rubber [inner tube of bike tire], stick & e-bows
- Violin and Cello player use metal mute
- 2 Microphones for all musicians
Electronics: -
Computer with Max/MSP
- Mixer & 2-4 speakers
(2 for normal stereo, 4 for cross-stereo & more volume in the front than in the back)
E L E C T R O N I C S
The electronics in Euphorbia is made in Max/MSP. It can also be done with external effects
(EQ, Reverb, Feedback/Distorsion and Harmonizer) controlled by a mixer, or similar. All the
electronic is improvised and live. It is reacting on the instruments. In the patch there is a
possibility to either play a soundfile or a live sound through the effects and record what you
are playing in 3 different ways:
- Mix of the soundfile or live sound & the electronics (effects) in stereo
- All electronics (effects) separated into 4 channels (Reverb, Feedback, EQ & Harmonizer)
- Soundfile / Live sound & electronics in 4 channels (1-2: Sound source & 3-4: Electronics)
You can either choose to control everything
from the computer or use a midi controller.

Damp the strings
Play behind the bridge. The string is defined by a
notated open string.
Play on the strings at the nut peg. Each tone is
definedby a notated open string.
Play on a string at the nutpeg. While doing that, do a
left hand pizz on the same string but behind the bridge.
Play a high harmonic that has a clear, screaming and
piercing sound, that is similar to the sound played
with a bike rubber on a string in the
zither/piano/guitar part.
Stop the bow very sudden. Also called stifle.
Legno battuto. Let the wood part of the bow ’jump’
on the string.
Tempo of the bow and at the same time the pressure.
Tempo and motion of the bow, while it moves
towards the bridge. Damp the strings but release the
damping pressure during this gesture. Hard pressure
on the string but have a diminuendo at the same time.
This is possible because the tempo is slowing down
at the same time. The sound will start being grouchy
and end up being more like ’small peas’.
Play a hard pressure on the fourth string and touch at
the same time the instrument body, creating a noise.
Play on the tailpiece. Do a gliss away from the
instrument body.
A natural harmonic. The ’black’ note is the sounding
tone.
Play arpeggio on natural harmonics.
Let the wood part on the bow ’jump’ on the strings
with the rhythm above when you do a glissando.
The bow starts in a normal position. Then you move it
high up on the fingerboard while playing an open G-
string. When the high position on the fingerboard is
reached, let the bow also touch the d-string. Place a
finger on the d-string below the bow. Now the bow is
on the ”wrong” side of the hand. Slide back from, and
towards, the bridge and play the harmonic spectra. The
line above, shows the motion of the hand on the string.
Play the dynamics like it were played backwards.
Vibrato. Follow the curves, describing the intensity.

There are different settings on the e-bow. Normal setting is
the one to the left. The setting to the right reveals the high
harmonics.
Damp the strings [ usually you have to play first and then
damp the string ]
Put a nail against the string, to create a ’buzzing’ sound.
Drag the bike rubber against a string on the instrument to create
a screaming, piercing but still clear tone. Unspecified tone. The
bike rubber is the inner tube from a bikes tire.
Drag bike rubber against strings on the instrument to create a
screaming, piercing but still clear tone. Specified tones.
Do a hard pizzicato where the string slaps back to the
fingerboard.
Drop a stick [ chopstick or pen ] on the string and let it jump
to create a tremolo.

Audible G.D-string only harmonics.
The bow is in normal position. Move it to molto sul tasto while playing G (open string). When the bow is molto sul tasto you let it touch also the D-string.
Place your finger below the bow. Slide back from and towards the bridge (ponticello) and play the harmonic spectra.
