Basic UnderstandingEveline faces a difficult dilemma: remain at home like a
dutiful daughter, or leave Dublin with her lover, Frank, who is
a sailor.
He wants her to marry him and live with him in Buenos Aires,
and she has already agreed to leave with him in secret.
The story tells about the internal conflict she feels in making
this decision.
Analysis and Interpretation-Symbolism
Symbolism is the use of images / figures /
designs to represent ideas or qualities
Analysis and Interpretation-Symbolism
Joyce found himself involved in the controversy concerning
the two most influential literary currents of the time, realism
and symbolism.
He always refused to be classified in either movement, since
realism and symbolism often combined in his work.
Analysis and Interpretation-Symbolism
Dubliners is often said to be written in perfect adherence to
the principles of naturalism then dominating.
Joyce intended to describe Dublin life in an objective way
and he also felt the need to document the real life nature of it.
Examples of Symbolism in Eveline
The names of certain characters are symbolic:
Eveline makes us think about Eve, the first woman,
symbol of the whole female condition.
Color symbolism: brown and frequently
suggesting the pervading theme of paralysis.
Examples of Symbolism in Eveline
The sea: it is both the way towards a future of salvation
from a squalid destiny but also the symbol of the
danger she imagines to exist outside her house.
Examples of Symbolism in Eveline
Dust: The first glimpse we get of the main character in
James Joyce’s “Eveline” is as she “leaned against the
window curtains” smelling the “dusty cretonne”.
This reinforces our understanding that Eveline is living
in a dreary, suffocating life.
Stream of ConsciousnessThe description of Eveline’s thoughts and
emotions dominate the text; most of the “action”
takes place within Eveline’s head.
The words convey her thoughts, emotions and
memories rather than describing a series of
events.
