This publication commemorates the second parade- “Bangladesh Day Parade 2008”, arranged by the Bangladesh Unity Federation of Los Angeles (BUFLA),

on March 30, 2008 Led by Chief Lee Baca of LA Sheriff Department who had long been demonstrating his love & compassion for the Bangladeshi American community.

“Bangladesh Day Parade” is already an official event recognized by the City of Los Angeles as well as by the Government of People’s Republic of Bangladesh that is going to take place on the streets of Los Angeles every year on Sunday following 26th of March. It is hoped that such marching, as moves forward, would bring more color and meaning to and from our proud community.

This year, on this occasion, representatives of many nations would walk side by side to put across their solidarity with the enthusiastic members of our community. BUFLA expresses its heartfelt thanks to Consul General Md. Abu Zafar and his counterparts in widening this wonderful opportunity and beyond.

We are indebted to those, including our Grand Sponsor ……, who donated generously for this Parade. We are also thankful to the organizations and individuals who placed their advertisements in this brochure.

We cordially acknowledge the Messages of dignitaries filled with kind words and encouragements. We would like to convey our appreciation for everyone who took time to write or compose for this Magazine. We are obliged to Kamran Alam for his time and skill in creating this publication.

We also take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers for their hard work, Kids for their participation in art competition, artists for presenting a great cultural program, venders & presenters for their support, and all other participants in parade.

We must mention the names of some of our community leaders who have distinguished themselves in offering direction, raising & contributing fund and in leading various functions of the event. Those honorable individuals are, Dr. Hashem, Dr. Mahbub, Major Kutubi, Dr. Shah Alam, Jalil Khan, Saleh Kibria, AKM Toha, Col. Huda, Quddus Khan, Dr. Zainul Abedin, Danny Tayyeb, M. Ismail, Anisur Rahman, Hossain Babu, Monwar Hossain, Khalid Hossain, Habib Tia, Emdadul Bob, Khalid Hossain, Humayun Kabir, Mohammed Ali, Major Hamid and Tarek.

Finally, we recognize with appreciation all those Bangladeshi and other Americans who sacrificed their personal time to join us and to reveal their solidarity in celebrating “Bangladesh Day Parade 2008”.

Her Name is Bangladesh How Western media perceptions of Bangladesh distort her true image

by Karishma Huda

Karishma Huda grew up in Los Angeles but never let her roots

go. She interned with Bangladesh’s leading development institutions. Karishma graduated from UC Berkeley in 2000, and completed her Masters from Institute of De-velopment Studies at University of Sussex, UK, in 2007. A freelance development expert, she is now helping Haiti implement many of the micro-credit successes that Bangla-desh innovated.I call Bangladesh a woman. Media perceptions, which often shape our own perceptions and realities, call Bangladesh a tragic woman. As a child she was violently raped by colonization, and as an adult brutally battered through war. She was able to secure her own inde-pendence and freedom, only to be subjected to one violent relationship after another - one with hunger, one with famine, one with natural disasters, one with political corrupt-ness. The list goes on. One might even consider her to be a bit of a whore. As a result, she has millions of children living in poverty. Bangla-desh needs to be rescued. Like a child, she needs to be cuddled, fed, clothed, have her hair stroked. She is too feeble to stand on her own two feet, and if the West does not save her, she will most definitely be left to die. On a train in to rural Bangladesh On to the red colored road… In to her rice fields But there is a fundamental problem with the way Western media perceive, and therefore depict, Bangladesh. I mean, really, what woman is so one-dimensional that she can be defined so simplisti-cally? Have Western newspapers, magazines, documentaries, televi-sion, etc. only gotten to know one side of Bangladesh’s personal-ity? Perhaps, or maybe this is the only side of her that they wish to portray. Perhaps this is the image of Bangladesh that they consciously would like to paint in the minds of their audience. Why? If Bangla-desh is a basket case that is in dire need of help, this opens up doors of opportunities for Western

countries to exploit. Research-ers and academics get funded to ‘learn and explain’ Bangladesh’s problems; development consultants get paid attractive salaries to go fix Bangladesh’s problems; journalists and filmmakers’ careers are thriving on showing the world Bangladesh’s problems; NGOs and international aid agencies have turned into a very lucrative business that is sus-taining on Bangladesh’s problems. As long as Western countries are ‘helping’ Bangladesh, their govern-ments and corporations have their foot firmly embedded in her. They hold the whip, and have a strong influence on her economy, politics, and resources. Interestingly enough, it is the same pictures of Bangladesh that you see over and over – the one on the World Vision commercials that most Americans will know to what I’m referring. With all of the thousands of media sources there are, is it not strange that the same images and stories are constantly recycled? Floods and poverty – really, can no one find something else to write about or show? From what I under-stand (based on conversations I’ve had with reputable journalists), this is because only a handful of media professionals have personally gone to visit her and gather her story. All the others pick up these stories, make two phone calls to people who can confirm them and throw in some statistics (probably a big shot academic or executive of an international aid agency), and voila, a new story is born. I’m no expert, but I get the impression that the objective is to maintain the status quo by putting in the least amount of effort. So there you have it – you are getting to know Bangladesh through the eyes of people who have never even met her themselves. But this is not the worst of the problems. After all, who really cares what Americans and the British think of Bangla-desh anyway? And in all fairness, Western countries have contrib-

uted to the steady poverty reduction in Bangladesh. More of her children are being fed. The conundrum lies in the way that Western media per-ceptions have drastically affected the way that Bangladesh views herself. She has learned to believe that she is weak. She has grown dependant on foreign aid, and she has taken on the identity of a pauper. She plays on her image as a tragic woman to pull at the heart-strings of Westerners as she holds out her palm. And it works. But she and her children know well that her identity is much more complex than that. Bangladesh is not tragic and one-dimensional. She is as much about poverty and floods as America is about freedom fries and baseball. Reducing her identity to that is a disgrace, and the media’s ability to do so in the minds of millions of individuals is dreadfully frightening. Her reality is multi-faceted, and the various intri-cacies weaved through her make her fascinating. Her children are not dying, they are surviving. Among the constraints that they face they laugh, they play, they are creative beyond imagination, they live, they thrive. She has so many wonderful stories. Perhaps the current gen-eration of Bangladeshis living in the West, such as myself, should take the responsibility of sharing them with you, so you can get a glimpse at who she really is: a beautiful, enduring, loving, passionate woman who will leave you inspired. *This short essay was inspired by a talk given at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex by BBC journalist/filmmaker Esther Armah about her upcoming book “Can I Be Me?” regarding media perceptions of Africa.Source: http://www.globalcritics.com/Columns/Karishma/col1.html

Bang, as I shut the car door walking scarcely to my stop. As I walked

into the bus nervously I glance for space on the bus. I was so fortunate I got a space with a 9th grader. Once I got off the bus, the same person di-rected me to my homeroom. I met 4-5 people from my aged school. So I sat next to them. Mr. Robinson is my educator. He is an extremely cool teacher. We introduced ourselves to the whole class. Mr. Robinson only let us study for tests or read a chap-ter book. Mr. Robinson directed me to my next class which was science. My science teacher is Ms. Anderson. She is very polite as well. I felt bad for her when she broke her arm. We did a little starter to start the day little later we corrected our work. She gave us our homework and we were off to 3rd period.Soon I directed myself to Mr. Ronkin’s class. Mr. Ronkin was my English lecturer. He was hilarious, but strict at the same time. He gave us a noun work sheet. Then we had a conversation about each other. He gave us our homework. As soon

as the bell rang, we were off to 5th period.I got puzzled at first. I went to Ms. Padilla’s class which is my 7th period instead of Mr. Merriman’s class. Mr. Merriman is a cool, enjoyable, and amusing teacher. He is my computer programming instructor. On the first day he let us explore the computer and internet. I went on the internet, e-mail, and even played Quake 3. At the end of the period, I had to go to period 7, which is Ms Padilla’s class-room.She is the nicest teacher I had ever known. Along with that, she is pleas-ant, funny, and lighthearted. The opening thing we did was a math sheet. Then after that we did a mad minute which was 30 addition facts in a minute. I finished in between 20-30 seconds. Then she introduced us to writer’s workshop. We spent 5-10 minutes thinking on topics for writing stories. Next 10 minutes, we shared our topics. Then we had a 10-20 minutes study period. I start-ed on my English homework. After I finished my noun work sheet, she

assigned us a math worksheet.Later I went to my bus as soon the bell rang. I rushed to get my seat at the back. I got the space, but it was as hot as if the sun sat right next to me. I came home at 3:49. As I walk to my residence, thought to myself “the first day at LACES was a suc-cess.”

PrologueIn 99 Harvard Professor Samuel P. Huntington published a series of articles that later became a book titled ‘The lash of ivilizations and the Remaking of World Order’. In it, he theorized that “people’s cultural and religious identities will be the primary source of conflict in the post-old War world.” He, however, was not the first to use that term. Another “conflict-creator” intellectual named Bernard Lewis proposed this concept in his 990 book ‘The Roots of Muslim Rage’. These books formed the basis on which American neocon-servative (necons) formulated ‘The Project for New American entury (PNA)’, architecting much of the post-9 American Foreign Policy doctrines of “pre-emptive war” and “full spectrum domination” of land, air, water and space. Lt. ol. (retd.) Omar Huda, who served in three armies (Pakistan, Bangladesh and USA), a veteran of two wars, prisoner of war for three years, now a peace activist and an avid student of Politics and Religion, challenges the very assumptions on which dangerous concepts are based. He believes that these ideas are no different from those of the Third Reich prior to World War II, intellectualizing a war regime that can only bring in similar destruction and suffering. In this case, results have come to fore much faster than its predecessor!

April 200In his book ‘lash of ivilizations’ Samuel Huntington predicted that “The clash of civilizations will dominate global politics; the fault lines between civilizations will be the battle lines of the future”. According to him, of all the “cultural fault lines”, religious divide will provide the most vulnerable fractures in conflicts among nations of the world.

For the last century and a half, global conflicts have been largely Western. Huntington traces four distinct phases in those international conflicts, Until World War I, conflicts were primarily between “princely states” or empires. That was followed by wars between “nation states”, consisting of “micro level conflicts for control of territories”, and at “macro level conflicts for relative military and economic power”. End of Word War II saw a bipolar world where the two superpowers, U.S. and USSR collided over “ideological” issues, each extending its sphere of influence over countries or regions of the world.

End of old War caused international conflicts to “move out” of the Western domain, resulting in conflicts between “Western and Non-Western civilizations”, wherein the latter is either deemed to “join” the West as “movers and shapers” of history, or fated to oppose the

West and thus earning the honor of being the “conflict-ing civilization”. Translated in Bush speak, this would read, “You are either with us, or you are with the terror-ists”.

Further more, religion, says Huntington, will be the major motivating force urging conflicts forward. He identifies these civilizations in the contemporary world: Western, onfucian, Japanese, Islamic, Hindu, Slavic-Orthodox. Latin American and “possibly” (??), African. Yes, Huntington does qualify the African with the word “possibly”!

Huntington obviously assumes that each of these “civili-zations” is monolithic within their constituents. onsider for example the Islamic world, spanning over eight geographical and cultural tracts: Arab, Persian, Turkish, entral Asian (former Soviet republics), South Asian (the

Indian subcontinent containing one-third of world’s Muslims), East Asian (containing Indonesia, world’s largest Muslim country), African, and finally, the Diaspora (including those in Europe and America, termed as “Western Muslims”). How monolithic are they in history, customs, culture, politics and modernity? Only to the ignorant do all monkeys look and behave alike!

Huntington offers several explanations supporting this latest transition in international conflicts. They all lead to a cultural divide along religious lines. As the world becomes smaller, increased proximity and interactions among civilizations reinvigorates “historical animosi-ties”. Economic modernization and social change cause a “gradual demise of local identity” and creates a cultural void”. Religion, says Huntington, fills this void with a call to return to roots, labeled as “fundamentalism”.

Huntington does not recognize, however, that this “la revanche de Dieu” - the revival of religion – was more an “indigenization” of cultures as a part of a long decoloni-zation process, rather than a source of religious conflict. [‘Decolonization – A Post-colonial Perspective’ edited

Role of Religion in Huntington’s ‘lash of ivilizations’A critique of a disastrously divisive idea that has set the world in fire anew

While it is true that religion did play a vital role in the decolonization process, just as ethnicity did, but they were, in many cases, triggered by the “divide and rule” policies of the erstwhile colonial powers. As a proof, one has only to look at various geographical and cultural boundaries of the erstwhile colonized world where religious and cultural harmony existed among heteroge-neous populace, e.g. Hindus and Muslims in India; Jews, Muslims and hristians in the Arab world.

Huntington goes on to argue that apparent ”immuta-bility” of cultural differences (an unchangeable factor) hinders compromise, much more than political and economic differences which can change over time. Where there may be an acceptable dichotomy in race (half-French and half-Arab), similar combination is not possible when it comes to religion (half-atholic and half-Muslim).

Once again, this analysis appears to me to be a delib-erate dissecting of differences that colonial powers had fanned for furtherance of their rule over a divided populace – because it does not explain peaceful coex-istence of different religions in India, Spain, Arabia and Africa for centuries.

Huntington’s rediscovered “fault lines” lie strictly along religious lines: European line separates the “Western hristianity” (atholics and Protestants) from the Eastern European and Asian religions (“Orthodox hristianity and Islam”). Less geographic but more substantive fault line is purported to lie between Western and Islamic Worlds.

Notice that a vast part of the world’s religions are conveniently excluded from this imaginary fault line – Jews, Hindus, Japanese, hinese and East Asians. This is perhaps because in Huntington’s geopolitical outcome, they will either “join” the West, or just stand on the side

lines while the West and Islam plays out their conflicts.

Huntington’s is a typical prognosis where conclusion precedes analysis. His motive appears to be to identify and define a conflict that must succeed the old War for nurturing and sustaining the Western military-indus-trial complex on the one hand, and whet the insatiable appetite of neo-liberal globalization on the other. As Tariq Ali puts it, “civilizations do not collide; coming together, they enrich each other.” Fundamentalists collide and devour the rest in the process, as they are doing right now. Huntington, at his best, is an intellec-tual in the service of the Western fundamentalist camp. At worst, he intellectualizes a war machine that President Dewitt Eisenhower warned us to be aware of as among the greatest dangers to American democracy.

EpilogueAt the time of writing this critique in 200, Samuel Hun-tington published yet another “lash” book titled, ‘Who Are We? The hallenges to America’s National Identity’. Having scared a nation out of its wits in to euphoria of war and victory (over Islam), Huntington now delivers a promise of yet another long, twilight battle for Western civilization. In his new model, Huntington pokes at yet another basic instinct of a scared and weakened populace – “Nativism” – defined as the fear and loathing of and hostility toward immigrants or other perceived “aliens”. Stemming from the 9th century American sociopolitical policy favoring the interests of established inhabitants over those of im-migrants, this time Huntington vision of “long war” turns away from religion and dives in to ‘Race’. This time, the danger comes form the Hispanic populace, starting with the “illegal immigration”. Before long, we will see politi-cians turning this in to huge political issue, erecting huge walls not only along borders of the country, but along the borders of the racial divide that lurks within America.

I. Freedom In Nature

A bird flies without being interrupted from one place to another in the vast blue sky. A butterfly dances around in the garden from flowers to flower. In the warmth of sunlight a flower blossoms to its full with a touch of natural beauty. Nature has a power of endless beauty. It has an invincible power of mysteri-ous force. Power of nature flows through the emer-gence of mighty fountain fall with a greater degree of freedom to move forward. Wind blows without being interrupted. Fishes swim in the river, in the lakes and in the ocean. Big fishes eat small ones. This is the part of the freedom in wild Nature. The blend of soil, water, sun (heat) and air gives the freedom in nature. Trees grow. Forest expands. Volcano erupts to burn whole dense forest into ashes. Freedom in the nature is wild. In most cases, the existence of weaker party is at the will of stronger party. This is the ground rule of freedom in the wild nature. When a volcano erupts with its natural freedom of expression, it devastates the beautiful landscape surrounding it. When the earth is not happy, it releases its anger. Depending on the magnitude, earthquake may take away lives of many people.

Stronger force dominates always-weaker party. So, definition of freedom is not same for weak and strong parties. A tiger finds its freedom to hunt a deer. That helpless deer looses its freedom of existence at the unhindered freedom of tiger. So, the strong party expands its territory of freedom by snatching away the freedom from the weak party. That was the way, how all kingdoms in various parts of the world were established. King was strong. So, people were exploited. Based on the wild world rule, the degree of free-dom for a businessman or an industrialist is completely different from that for employees or working people.

II. Captivity and Exploitation

Human soul has the eternal freedom when it leaves the body, composed of bio-chemical complex. It is still an unknown mystery regarding the physico-chemical properties and the source of soul. Soul is an unseen force. Without soul, body does not have any value, it disintegrates. Soul has the natural tendency to seek freedom. When the soul resides in

the biochemical complex structure of human body, it propels body toward freedom. Without soul, people cannot move for freedom. Soul must have the affinity for freedom. When the soul is passive or absent, then the living body is dead.

When the soul has a strong sense of independence, then it pushes the body to seek freedom. If the soul is ignorant, then the body is enslaved. Ignorant soul exposes body to exploitation and torture by others. Then, life appears to be nothing but a burning hell. It appears paradox in the peak evolution of human society that in most cases behind all prosperity their lie many untold sad stories of captivity and exploitation of many innocent people. Almost everywhere in the worlds, religions were shrewdly misused by a handful people to captivate and exploit the vast majority of population. Religion may render people too numb to stand against torture and exploitation. Although the purpose of religions was to free people from exploita-tion and social injustices, but soon religion became the most cost-effective tool to tame and exploit vast majority of population. How ty-rannical were the religious doctrines, pages of history bear the clear evidence.

III. Fight for Freedom

“ Fight for Freedom ” - is just probably the natural part of human existence. Evolution of human society so far occurred through a series of phases. People fought and many lives were sacrificed in the process of transition from one phase to another. There had been always a lag phase as a sign of stability before each transition from one phase to another. In gen-eral, most of the people want to live a peaceful life. Modernization or industrialization of human society was very often accompanied by occupation, domina-tion, slavery, exploitation and/or torture. When under exploitation and oppression, most of the people remain insensitive, partly due to lack of future vision, then a small percentage of population comprising philosophers, politicians, writer, singer and artists etc. shed the light of freedom even in deep dark-ness. This is the way, how people gave their lives to liberate their country from colonialization in the hope of obtaining improved socio-economical life. After a jubilant victory, in many cases hopes and dreams are shattered. Then still people suffer and fight again …….. .

IV. How Much Freedom Do We Have?

Real freedom does not appear to really exist anywhere in the world. In the context of market economy, money is one of the most important socio-cultural parameters to ensure relatively higher degree of freedom. Although in a well-defined democratic country, people enjoy greater degree of independence, still at individual level real freedom still remains questionable. Even the glori-ous history of a developed country becomes helplessly meaningless to starving and distressed people.

In many independent countries, people are still not independent. After independence in many countries, people have to fight and in extreme cases to die just for human rights. Because, after independence if the system is not redesigned for basic human rights, then many people will remain overlooked. Every human be-ing will bloom to fullness with mutual respect in human society. In true sense, this vision should really be the basic foundation of individual freedom for all human beings. But in reality, this is far from what really people achieve. Always there have been/are /will be promises from political leaders about social justice and better life style. In most cases, these promises never take shape from theory to practice. When the scope of securing survival means for daily life is not guaranteed by the policy of the country, then all the sacrifice of lives and efforts become questionable. This kind of situation helplessly appears in many independent countries where peoples’ dreams and hopes are shattered to disappear in the darkest future of uncertainty. In most cases, a very small percentage of people connected to and holding state power make tons of money and personal wealth in exchange of very little effort.

With the passage of time, sense of individual freedom keeps on changing. So, what is known to be part of freedom and give satisfaction today to the people may not be sufficient next day. Definitely, there must be a set of rules governing country with emphasis on human dignity. But in complex game of power, money and sex, there is very narrow scope for the vast majority of people to fulfill their dreams, unless a pro-people dynamic state policy is in place.

Even a country has relatively independent status, but when people work hard just to pay taxes, telephone bills, credit card bills with high interest, insurance premiums, high premiums of health insurance etc then even owning a house may fail to make the taste of freedom any palatable. It is irony in the history that despite so many sacrifices, pleasant taste of freedom was/is/will be never within the reach of vast majority of population. Whereas, without the direct participa-tion of the people no country in the world would have achieved independence. In most cases, the extent of freedom is limited to only a group of people who come

to state power with the support of the remaining people. Because, this small number of individuals undergo metamorphosis in contact with the power. Once who had been in the same side of people to fight together for freedom, in contact with power the same people plunge into a different world filled with greed, hypocrisy, lust, deceitfulness and insatiable hunger for power and money. The pleasant taste of freedom remains con-fined in the small world of power, where any intrusion by the outsider is strictly prohibited.

V . Conclusions

In most cases beautiful dreams and hopes turn into nightmare. In order to get the real freedom people must feel freedom in their mind and spirit. The combined efforts of all people at the following issues would be helpful:

(a) Not to trust blindly any state leaders.(b) Not to be part of the folk of sheep.(c) To ensure effective voice in the decision mak-ing of state policies.(d) State power must not allow any individual or any family or any particular segment of people to make tons of easy money while the vast number of popula-tion work hard to barely earn their livelihood. (e) As long as people do not have clear under-standing of freedom in their mind, only a piece of land is unable to deliver the fruit of independence.(f) It is neither a country nor a government itself that can deliver the products of freedom to people.(g) It is the outcome of a system, designed for the operation of overall function of a country that deter-mines the quality of lifestyle of people. So. People need to understand very clearly the mechanism of govern-mental functions.(h) People must make sure that the operating sys-tem of country management has been designed as to provide maximum benefits to the people, not just only to a handful people connected to political and state power.

Although, absolute freedom is not achievable, but rela-tive freedom with mutual respect for all human beings is possible.

I am what I see Saika Kibria

Hallow winds that roam around me,You will never understand. You only see the vast haze of mist, but I see more.Did you know? My smiles can be real.My tears are sometimes forced. And the pressure is certain. The pressure you have created! No, you didn’t know. You continue to hurt me. You give my pain. Fine, give me all of it. I want to feel it and be relieved.I want to die alive. So let me feel what I seek. And stop seeing what you want to see.Start seeing what you need to see.You see mountains. I see the seas beyond that. You see rivers. I see the fish inside.I see all four corners of Earth,And the seven stars of heaven that roams the night. And I hate the serpents of the hellfire. But I see it.I need to see it, I must see it, and I have to see it.Though I don’t want to see it, I do.Can you see who I am?I am a candle that is melting slowly and becoming immoral.A thousand fingers pressed in my sultry wax.Nails embedded and pricking at me.I am a frog. Hopping. Splashing. Swimming.I jump from place to place to meet with other frogs.I am a weed. Flowers cannot crush me.I will stand still and be a weed, until all is over.I won’t wilt in the sun.Stop trying to change the course of my essence. And try to understand me.I am going to be who I think I am,And I think that I am what I see…

I have freedom, but no equality. I have rights, but no immunity. What is one without the other? I was always told to stay out of their way, or I will get what a black women like me deserves. Why should I be treated in this fashion because of my color? What does color prove anyway?Nothing.I might not exist to them, but what about my talent? Shouldn’t that receive some recognition?Even, if my color is frowned upon? No. I am just a stone on the side of the road, to be kicked aside.A flower, rejected because of its blush. But inside this wounded, leaned soul there is someone.I have known it. Someone that is willing to fight; and take her proper place in life. I am a bird, trapped longing to sprout its wings. A dolphin ambuscaded by acidic, algid water; struggling for survival. A lion only wanted for its hide and ignored of its true exquisiteness within. Because, humans are animals, I am a human caught amidst light and dark skins, yet hated by another kind. But I am also that same bird, who will find a way to sprout its wings. And I am also that same dolphin who would sacrifice herself, before having another face the same fate as I. I am that same lion whose exquisiteness would be recognized and its hide protected.

I am Marian Anderson a talented, opera singer who did not receive equal opportunities in life for the wrong reason; because I am Black. But I struggled, fought and I pushed to receive as much of a life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness my black skin would allow me. Hoping, always hoping that my presence and moderate success in this world will make someone else’s climb a little more meaningful and symbolic. If I could do it, then there is no reason why you cannot. What does color prove anyway?Nothing.
