Each EX4200 switch includes an integated application-speciic
integated cicuit (ASIC)-based Packet Fowading Engine, the
EX-PFE, while an integated routing Engine (rE) delives all

Architecture and Key ComponentsThe EX4200 switches ae single ack-unit devices that delive a
compact solution o cowded wiing closets and access switch
locations whee space and powe ae at a pemium. Each EX4200
suppots optional ont-panel uplink modules oeing eithe ou
GbE pots o two 10GbE pots o high-speed backbone o link-
aggegation connections between wiing closets and upsteam
aggegation switches. Uplink modules can be installed without
poweing down the switch, enabling uses to add high-speed
connectivity at any time o migate om one uplink type to
the othe to delive the ultimate in lexible, high-peomance
inteconnectivity.
The EX4200 also eatues a ont-panel LCD that oes a lexible
inteace o peoming device bing-up and coniguation
ollbacks, epoting switch alam and LED status, o estoing
the switch to its deault settings. The LCD also displays a Vitual
Chassis membe switchs chassis slot numbe and route Engine
status o apid identiication and poblem esolution.
Dual ea-panel Vitual Chassis pots enable EX4200 switches to
be inteconnected ove the 128 Gbps vitual backplane. Switches
deployed in close poximity, such as wiing closets o top-o-
ack data cente applications, can be secuely connected using a
Vitual Chassis cable and cable lock supplied by Junipe Netwoks.
In addition, a dedicated ea-panel rJ-45 pot is available o out-
o-band management, while a ea-panel USB pot can be used to
easily upload Junos OS and coniguation iles.

Virtual Chassis TechnologyUp to 10 EX4200 switches can be inteconnected using Vitual
Chassis technology to ceate a single logical device suppoting up
to 480 10/100/1000BASE-T pots o 240 100/1000BASE-X pots,
plus an additional 40 GbE o 20 10GbE uplink pots. Additionally,
EX4200s can be inteconnected in a Vitual Chassis coniguation
that also includes EX4500s, ceating a single logical switch
that oes a vaiety o pot and density options o mixed seve
envionments.
In a Vitual Chassis coniguation, all switches ae monitoed and
managed as a single device, enabling entepises to sepaate
physical topology om logical goupings o endpoints and allowing
moe eicient esouce utilization. Highly esilient topologies can
also be ceated using the GbE o 10GbE uplink pots to extend
the Vitual Chassis coniguation acoss long distances spanning
multiple wiing closets, loos o even buildings.

Features and Benefts
Chassis-Class AvailabilityThe EX4200 line o Ethenet switches delive the same HA
unctionality and suppot many o the same ailove capabilities
as othe Junipe chassis-based systems.
Each EX4200 switch is capable o unctioning as a route Engine.
When two o moe EX4200 switches ae inteconnected, they
shae a single contol plane among all Vitual Chassis membe
switches. When two EX4200 switches ae inteconnected, Junos
OS automatically initiates an election pocess to assign a maste
(active) and backup (hot-standby) route Engine. An integated
Laye 2 and Laye 3 Gaceul route Engine Switchove (GrES)
eatue maintains uninteupted access to applications, sevi ces
and IP communications in the unlikely event o a pimay rE ailue.
When moe than two switches ae inteconnected in a Vitual
Chassis conguation, the emaining switch elements act as line
cads and ae available to assume the backup rE position should the
designated maste ail. Maste, backup and line cad pioity status
can be assigned by the netwok opeations team to dictate the
ode o ascension; this N+1 rE edundancy, coupled with the GrES,
nonstop outing (NSr) and nonstop bidging (NSB) capabilities o
the Junos OS, assues a smooth tanse o contol plane unctions
ollowing unexpected ailues.
The EX4200 implements the same slot/module/pot numbeing
schema as othe Junipe Netwoks chassis-based poducts whennumbeing Vitual Chassis pots, poviding tue chassis-like
opeations. By utilizing a consistent opeating system and a single
coniguation ile, all switches in a Vitual Chassis coniguation
ae teated as a single device, simpliying oveall system
maintenance and management.
Individually, the EX4200 oes a numbe o HA eatues that ae
typically associated with modula chassis-based switches. When
combined with the ield-poven Junos OS and L2/L3 ailove
capabilities, these eatues povide the EX4200 with tue caie-
class eliability.
Redundant power supplies: The EX4200 line o Ethenet
switches suppot intenal edundant, load-shaing, hot-swappable
and eld-eplaceable AC and DC powe supplies to maintainuninteupted opeations. Thanks to thei compact ootpint, the
EX4200 equies signicantly less powe than chassis-based
switches deliveing equivalent pot densities.

The EX4200 uns on Junos OS, the same opeating systemsotwae used by Junipe Netwoks outes to powe the wolds
lagest and most complex netwoks.
By utilizing a common opeating system, Junipe delives a
consistent implementation and opeation o contol-plane
eatues acoss all poducts. To maintain that consistency, Junos
OS adhees to a highly disciplined development pocess that
utilizes a single souce code, ollows a single quately elease
tain, and employs a highly available modula achitectue that
pevents isolated ailues om binging an entie system down.
These attibutes ae undamental to the coe value o the
sotwae, enabling all poducts poweed by Junos OS to be
updated simultaneously with the same sotwae elease. All
eatues ae ully egession-tested, making each new elease atue supeset o the pevious vesion; customes can deploy the
sotwae with complete conidence that all existing capabilities
will be maintained and opeate in the same way.
Converged NetworksThe EX4200 line o Ethenet switches povide the highest levels
o availability o the most demanding conveged data, voice
and video envionments, deliveing the most eliable platom o
uniying entepise communications.
By poviding Class 3 PoE with 15.4 watts on some o all pots to
powe voice ove IP (VoIP) telephones, closed-cicuit secuity
cameas, wieless access points, and othe IP-enabled devices, the
EX4200 delives a utue-pooed solution o conveging dispaate
netwoks onto a single IP inastuctue. Futhemoe, any PoE potcan povide up to 18.6 watts to powe wieless access points and
othe PoE poweed devices equiing moe than Class 3, 15.4 watts
o PoE. EX4200 PoE+ switches also suppot 802.3at standads-
based PoE+ o poweing netwoked devices l ike multiple adio
IEEE 802.11n wieless access points, and video phones that may
equie moe powe than available with IEEE 802.3a.
LLDP-MED-based ganula PoE management allows the EX4200
to negotiate PoE usage down to a action o a watt on poweed
devices, enabling moe eicient PoE utilization acoss the switch.
To ease deployment, the EX4200 suppots the industy-
standad Link Laye Discovey Potocol (LLDP) and LLDP-MediaEndpoint Discovey (LLDP-MED), which enable the switches to
automatically discove Ethenet-enabled devices, detemine thei
powe equiements and assign vitual LAN (VLAN) paametes.
In addition, the EX4200 suppots ich quality o sevice (QoS)
unctionality o pioitizing data, voice and video taic. The
switches suppot eight QoS queues on evey pot, enabling them to
maintain multi-level, end-to-end taic pioitizations. The EX4200
also suppots a wide ange o policy options, including pioity and
shaped deicit weighted ound-obin (SDWrr) queuing.
SecurityThe EX4200 line o Ethenet switches ully integate with
the Junipe Netwoks Uniied Access Contol (UAC), which
consolidates all aspects o a uses identity, device and location,enabling administatos to enoce access contol and secuity
down to the individual pot o use levels.
Policy ochestation, enabled via Junipe UAC Enhancement
Potocol (JUEP), enables the EX4200 to constuct dynamic
ACLs on a pot-by-pot basis by associating ole/esouce access
policies with authoization table enties. This allows the switch
to dynamically ceate thousands o ACLs o ole-based access
policies in a scaled envionment.
Additionally, a captive potal ediection eatue ediects
UrLs om the EX4200 to the Inanet Contolle (IC) o use
authentication and authoization, making the IC a single souce
o tuth o use and device authentication and o enocing ole-
based secuity policies.
Woking as an enocement point within the UAC, the EX4200
povides both standads-based 802.1X pot-level access
contol as well as Laye 24 policy enocement based on use
identity, location and/o device. A uses identity, device type,
machine postue check and location can be used to detemine
whethe access should be ganted and o how long. I access is
ganted, the switch assigns the use to a speciic VLAN based on
authoization levels. The switch can also apply QoS policies o
mio use taic to a cental location o logging, monitoing o
theat detection by intusion pevention systems.

The EX4200 also povides a ull complement o pot secuity
eatues including DHCP (Dynamic Host Coniguation Potocol)
snooping, DAI (dynamic ArP inspection) and MAC limiting (pe
pot and pe VLAN) to deend against intenal and extenal
spooing, man-in-the-middle and denial-o-sevice (DoS) attacks.
MACsec on the EX4200A MACsec sotwae license enables the EX4200 to povide nea
line-ate hadwae-based encyption o use taic on a dual-
speed 2x10GbE o 4x1GbE SFP+ MACsec uplink module.
Deined by IEEE 802.1AE, MACsec povides secue, encyptedcommunication at the link laye that is capable o identiying and
peventing theats om denial o sevice (DoS) and intusion
attacks, as well as man-in-the-middle, masqueading, passive
wietapping and playback attacks launched om behind the
iewall. When MACsec is deployed on switch pots, all taic
is encypted on the wie but taic inside the switch is not. This
allows the switch to apply all netwok policies such as Quality o
Sevice (QoS), deep packet inspection and sFlow to each packet
without compomising the secuity o packets on the wie.
Hop-by-hop encyption enables MACsec to secue communications
while maintaining netwok intelligence. In addition, Ethenet-based
WAN netwoks can use MACsec to povide link secuity ove long-
haul connections. MACsec is tanspaent to Laye 3 and highe-
laye potocols and is not limited to IP taic; it woks with any typeo taic caied ove Ethenet links.
Simplifed Management and OperationsWhen employing Vitual Chassis technology, the EX4200
damatically simpliies netwok management. Up to 10
inteconnected EX4200 switches can be managed as a single
device. Each Vitual Chassis goup utilizes a single Junos OS image
ile and a single coniguation ile, educing the oveall numbe
o units to monito and manage. When Junos OS is upgaded on
the maste switch in a Vitual Chassis coniguation, the sotwae
is automatically upgaded on all othe membe switches at the
same time.
The EX4200 also includes pot poles that allow netwok
administatos to automatically congue pots with secuity, QoS
and othe paametes based on the type o device connected to
the pot. Six pecongued poles ae available, including deault,
desktop, desktop plus IP phone, wieless access point, outed uplink
and Laye 2 uplink. Uses can select om the existing poles o
ceate thei own and apply them though the command line inteace(CLI), Junos Web inteace o management system.
An EZ touchless povisioning eatue allows a DHCP seve to
push coniguation details and sotwae images to multiple
switches at bootup.
