Limitations of Tools

• Precision of results• Validity of assumptions?• Reliability of modeling?

• Tools need• Initial design proposal• Fundamental ideas• Creative thinking• User's intelligence

• There are no “self-configuring” tools• “garbage in - garbage out” rule applies strictly

Tools are just tools intelligence is yours!

• Global Positioning System• Based on a constellation of orbital satellites• CDMA coding of the signal, different codes for

civilian or military use• Precision:

• Accuracy of ca. 18m technically feasible• For civilians deliberately (!!) decreased to approx.

• 100m accuracy at 95% probability• 300m at 99.9% probability

• Used to get coordinates of visited sites during site surveys and locating measurements

• Watch out!!! Map datum and GPS datum must be THE SAME, otherwise bigger errors come out

Site Survey ToolsGPS

• Space segment• 24 satellites (“bird cage”)• 6 orbital planes with 4 satellites each• Inclination: 55 deg, orbit time 11h 58´

• Control segment• Master control station in Falcon air-base (Colorado/USA)• 4 observer stations around the earth near the equator

• User segment (=receiver)• Follows up to 6 satellites, selects best 4• 3-dimensional position • 3-dimensional velocity

• Measurements tools: TOM, TIM

• Analysing tool: SAM

• TOM (Tool for Outdoor Measurement) is a measurement and monitoring system for

• GSM (900, 1800, 1900), AMPS and NMT networks

• TOM collects measurement results and geographical coordinates.

• The measurements provide useful information for network optimisation, verification and maintenance.

• Benchmark of different networks performance simultaneously

Geographical Database

• Terrain structures and land usage types are needed in electronic database for planning tools

Terrain structures“topography”

hilly terrain

Land usage“morphography”

Database resolution is criticalfor accurate coverage prediction!

Layers of one block

One pixel / unit

Digital Map Data

• Pixel (map unit) is the smallest detail of a digital map

• Pixels are squares, defining the resolution of data

• The value of a pixel is an average over the area covered

• Typical resolution 2m... 500m

• All layers of a block have the same resolution

• A map can contain blocks with different resolutions

Page 35: EXPLAIN M11 - 1 Radio Network Planning Tools

Geographical Information Systems

• Computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information

• Layers of information

• Before the digital data can be analyzed, they may have to undergo other manipulations - projection conversions, for example - that integrate them into a GIS

• For further info: http://www.usgs.gov/network/science/earth/gis.html

Datum (1/2)• Geodetic datum (e.g. World Geodetic System 1984, WGS-84) defines

an ellipsoid to transform potato-shaped earth surface to a plane surface. Any rectangular coord. system can then be used on a plane surface.

• Coord. transformation Lat/Long -> rectangular system: a combination of the Ellipsoid used + coordinate system used on plane surface. Most common combination (e.g. in GPS) is WGS-84 ellipsoid + UTM rectangular coord. system.

• Flat-earth models • used for plane surveying

• Complex ellipsoidal models • used for international applications• describe the size, shape, orientation, gravity field, and angular

velocity of the earth.

Page 37: EXPLAIN M11 - 1 Radio Network Planning Tools

37 © NOKIA 6-60731/ RADIO NETWORK PLANNING TOOLS/ v 2.0

Datum (2/2)• Referencing geodetic coordinates to the wrong datum can result in

position errors of hundreds of meters

• Different nations and agencies use different data

• The Global Positioning System is based on the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS-84)

• Requires careful datum selection and careful conversion between coordinates in different data

• Complete datum conversion is based on seven parameter transformations

• translation parameters• three rotation parameters and • scale parameter

Page 38: EXPLAIN M11 - 1 Radio Network Planning Tools

38 © NOKIA 6-60731/ RADIO NETWORK PLANNING TOOLS/ v 2.0

Earth Models

• Ellipsoidal earth models are required to• accurate range and bearing calculations over long distances• compute position and waypoint information (Loran-C, and GPS

navigation receivers).

• Reference ellipsoids are defined by major (equatorial radius) and minor (polar radius) semi-axes.

• Other reference ellipsoid parameters such as flattening, and eccentricity are computed from these two terms.

• The best of these models can represent the shape of the earth within about one-hundred meters.

Page 39: EXPLAIN M11 - 1 Radio Network Planning Tools

39 © NOKIA 6-60731/ RADIO NETWORK PLANNING TOOLS/ v 2.0

Lat/Long Coordinate System

• Latitude, Longitude, and Height system• the most commonly used coordinate system • reference planes: Prime Meridian and the Equator

Page 40: EXPLAIN M11 - 1 Radio Network Planning Tools

40 © NOKIA 6-60731/ RADIO NETWORK PLANNING TOOLS/ v 2.0

UTM Coordinate System

• Universal Transverse Mercator system• defines two-dimensional, horizontal positions.

• UTM zone numbers • designate 6 degree longitudinal strips • extending from 80 degrees South latitude to 84 degrees North latitude.

• UTM zone characters • designate 8 degree zones extending north and south from the equator.
