THERE was pandemonium in Vee-plaas, Port Elizabeth last Wednes-day when members of the South Af-rican Police Service (SAPS) fromKwazakhele tried to collect hun-dreds of bottles of liquor from resi-dents after the hijacking of a truckcarrying the liquor.

Refusing to budge, residentsthrew stones and assaulted a policeofficer who was trying to stop themfrom running away with cases ofstolen liquor.“They threw stones and called po-

lice names saying they did not stealthe liquor, it was given to them byamagintsa (the thugs) as a gift,” saidpolice spokesperson ConstableNomdumiso Pohleli-Ntombanawhowas present during the event.According to Pohleli-Ntombana,

this started around 11am when theBig Daddy’s Liquor Distributioncompany truck was hijacked in Uit-enhage Road allegedly by three gun-men.“According to the driver (whose

name is known to Express Indaba),the thugs jumped on to the vehicleand ordered the driver at gun-pointto drive to Veeplaas near Crown Su-permarket,” said Pohleli-Ntombana.While one attacker was in the

truck, others followed behind withthe van.“They stopped the truck near Ma-

baso tavern, across Crown Super-market in Veeplaas and forced thedriver and his two assistants to off-load three of the pallets on to theirvan.“They then called members of the

community tohelp themselves to thefour pallets of liquor still on thetruck, before they fled.“In the meantime, two police offi-

cers, ConstableWinston Pringle andSgt Marcel Esbach, saw members ofthe community running away withcases of liquor. They became suspi-cious and followed the directionwhere they came from. They sawpeople in numbers sweeping thetruck clean,” said Pohleli-Ntomba-na.The two officers called for backup. But, itwas too lateas the truckwas

cleaned out and people had quicklydisappeared.“Police entered the houses in

search of liquor because, at thisstage, the truckdriver andhis assist-ants had already reported the case ofhijacking at Algoa Park Police Sta-tion. THEperennial problemof flooding inMission-vale, which has damaged houses, led to poorsanitation and roads, and stormwater challen-ges will soon be a thing of the past.

This is thanks to the R50 million that theNelson Mandela Bay Municipality haspumped into the area for the implementationand improvement of bulk stormwater, sanita-tion and civil services.

About 2500 Missionvale homes will be con-nected to sanitation and water services by theend of April 2016.Work concerning sanitation and water ser-

vices is in the final stages of completion. The work undertaken by the Municipality

is divided into five phases: sanitation, waterservices, stormwater infrastructure, construc-tion of a pump station and road construction.About 25 SMME contractors have benefited

so far, while 98 people have been employed indifferent capacities. The area has a relatively flat terrain and is

surroundedby salt pansandahighgroundwa-ter table.During heavy rains, the community of Mis-

sionvale experienced challenges around flood-ing and poor access for cars and public trans-port.The area used to be a shack area, and the

residents had to rely on themselves for servi-ces. Electricity has been laid on for them, withwater services provided through stand pipeslocated approximately 200 metres from each

household.Aspart of thePoliticalLeadership’s commit-

ment to oversight and following themoney, In-frastructure and Engineering Portfolio Chair-person, councillor Andile Mfunda, led a teamof Infrastructure andEngineeringCouncillorsand officials on a site inspection.

During the site inspection, they inspectedthe progress made, interacted with affectedcommunities, and checked on expenditure todate, employment opportunities created andSMME support.

“I had to come here, we are pumping a lotof money into this area to improve services. It is therefore important that we as politicianswho carry themandate of the people follow themoney and see if government work is beingdone,” Mfunda said.

“Issues of sanitation are serious issues thataffect people’s dignity.“As a political principal mandated by the

ANC government, it is my duty to make surethat the dignity of our people here is restored.I am also pleased that the community ofMissi-onvale are working with the Municipality tofast track service delivery”.He promised residents that before the end of

April he would return to officially open someof the finished projects, together with thebroader political leadership, led by ExecutiveMayor Danny Jordaan.

Community member Thozama Qayiso said,“For leadership to come here and make com-mitments while we already see that there iswork happening on the ground is encourag-ing.”

IT could take years to develop, but theAirportsCompany South Africa (ACSA) wants to turnNelson Mandela Bay into a huge aerotropolis.

This was the message the company broughttobusiness leaderswhentheysharedtheir futu-re plans for the Port Elizabeth airport at a busi-ness breakfast, co-hosted by theNelsonMande-la Bay business chamber.

“We want to develop the cities around eachof our airports,” said Zinhle Ntanzi, assistantpropertymanager for ACSA. “The idea is to es-tablish the airport as the centre of the develop-ment,while creatingnodes andbusiness oppor-tunities for the rest of the city.”

In theBay this planwon’t be a “five-year con-cept”, Ntanzi added. “It is a long term plan thatcan takeupto20years,butwealreadyownlandthat will allow for development around the air-port.”These planned developments include a space

of 1,5 hectares on Allister Miller Drive, whichcould be used for an office block, vehicle show-roomsandotherretailers.Anotherpieceof land

has been set aside for light industrial develop-ment, aswell as distribution and self-storage fa-cilities.A third area of 6 hectares can be used forma-

nufacturingandconstructioncompanies. Inthemeantime, retailers and business owners willhave the opportunity to join the airport, whenthe leases for 11 shop spaces, including a coffeeshop, expire soon. “Most of the contracts are foropen-concept retailers,” explained Lelo Kune-ne, commercial manager.

Kunene said tender applications would soonbe open for these contracts. These developments were set in motion as

part of a plan to create a better balance betweenthe income earned from airline tickets and thebusinesses at the airport.

“Wewant to shift the focus,” saidGregSmall, acting airport manager.

“The passenger totals have been decliningeach year for the last few years, and we can’tbe critically dependent on passenger numbersfor our main income anymore.” – ODETTE KEMP

MOTHERWELL NU 9 newly formed commu-nity club Volcano FC, which was establishedfor girls in January last year, is growing byleaps and bounds.

When the club was established it had onlytwo girls’ teams which were U/11 and U/12.

According to Volcano FC founder MzuvukileReggie Khesi, they now have six teams.Khesi said, “I am very proud that we have

three boys’ teams and three girls’ teams thisyear. Many parents requested that we shouldallow boys to join our club. We decided to re-spond to the call of the parents positively, be-cause our aim is to curb crime in our commu-nity using sport as a tool to unite our children

against this enemy. We believe that if theyouth is kept actively busy in sport, some ofthem will not become criminals.”One of the club’s founder members, Khulu-

lekile Khesi, bought kit for their club lastyear. Reggie also bought a new set of kit.Reggie said, “We dig deep into our pockets

so that our club can move forward. I decidedto buy a brand new set of kit. Our teams are

so enthusiastic and we do not want to disap-point them. I also used my creativity to maketraining equipment for the team.”Sindi Yako, who is also a founder member

of the club, stated that they requested parentsto buy soccer boots and balls for their chil-dren. Yako said that the responsewas tremen-dous.“We appreciate the role that some parents

are playing for their children. This helps ourclub to grow. The children aremotivated andtheir confidence is very high because theirparents are supportive.“Iwould like to appeal to those parentswho

do not take sport seriously to come on board.I would like to thank the supportive parentsbecause they make things much easier.”Reggie stated that their major challenge

was transport for players and he appealed tomembers of the community to lend a helpinghand in this regard.Since they are not affiliated to any local

football association, the club participates infriendly matches and community tourna-ments.According to Reggie they will apply to MO-

FA for affiliation in 2017.

The atmosphere was electric and energeticwith the supporters wearing red and black. Before the game large crowds of passionate

supporters sang and danced in front of the pa-vilion.The game reminded fans of yesteryear’s

township soccer.City wanted to win the game to consolidate

their grip on top of the ABC Motsepe Leaguelog table standing while Ideas were out forrevenge as they lost 3-0 to City in their firstround clash last year.Ideas also wanted to cement their position

in the top eight of the log table standing.City are still on top of the log thanks to Kok-

with just two points above FC Elliot. The game had all the Kasie football lovers

wanted to entertain them. The players showed their own traditional

style of playing; they dribbled. The “showme your number”, “shibobo” or

“tsamaya” were the order of the day.City dribbling wizard Akhona Serero

showed his football displaying skills for ashortwhile because Ideaswing back, AphiweSkhoko Mambuku, marked him tightly. As aresult Serero had a quiet game.FreedomFFFunani andAndile ZaneGxek-

wa displayed their class and the stadiumwasabuzz.City’s new signees Amandla Amigo Mrwe-

bi and Zithulele AlaMhlontlo did not add val-ue to the game and Ideas skipper ZukisaniBenni Ngalo, who was expected to pullstrings, could not find his rhythm. The hero of the day was Mnoneleli Mayeye

Zitho who scored a thunderous shot that sentIdeas supporters into raptures.Strikers from both sides lacked the tech-

nique and composure and theymade poor de-cisions in front of the goals. All in all, the gamehad all positives and the

game of football was a winner.
