In a consumer-driven economy, leading the market means making “imperfect decisions”Daniel Zhang, Chief Executive Officer of Alibaba Group, was interviewed by Albert Ng, China Chairman and Greater China Managing Partner of EY.

Daniel started his career as an auditor, and then joined Alibaba in 2007 as CFO of the Alibaba business unit Taobao Mall, later called tmall.com. He was the key architect of Alibaba’s “11.11” Chinese Singles’ Day sales event, which became the world’s largest online shopping phenomenon, generating RMB 91.2b (US$14b) in revenues in 2015.

Daniel shared several insights including:

• As China enters its “New Normal” of a consumer-driven economy, market demand — and how businesses respond to that demand — will shape the country’s future economic growth. Just as smartphones have firmly entered the Chinese mainstream in the last three years, so will future technology innovations meet the demands of the next generation.

• The ability of instant “internet celebrities” to drive millions in sales is evidence of the high interactivity of millennials, and businesses will need to understand these concepts in order to compete.

• The various ways businesses are doing transactions has also changed. Big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things are helping a new generation of startups to better match consumers with service providers, and this will profoundly influence the future Chinese economy, and create enormous opportunity.

• His experience as an auditor trained him to be meticulous and detail-oriented, but it also gave him the courage to take risks. CEOs “must be market-driven and force themselves to make imperfect decisions” .

打造成全球最大的网购狂欢节。仅2015年,双十一就创造了约912亿元人民币的收入。

随着中国进入消费导向型经济的“新常态”,市场需求,以及企业应对市场需求的方式将

决定国家未来的经济增长模式。正如智能手机在短短三年里俨然成为了中国的主流,未

来的科技创新也将为满足下一代用户的需求而出现。

“网红”创造出的惊人销售正体现00后喜爱互动的特性,企业需明白这些概念才能保持

竞争力。

与此同时,商业运营和交易方式也在发生变化:大数据、云计算和物联网正在帮助新一代

China’s “new normal”: challenges and opportunitiesWei Sun Christianson is a financial market veteran, a China expert and a remarkable female leader. In a thought-provoking keynote interview, Wei shared her insights into China’s “new normal” and the ways that the slowing growth rate might impact global markets.

Key insights from this session include:

• Even though the new normal means China’s rate of growth is slowing, it’s important to remember that China still contributes around 30% of global output, more than the G3 countries combined.

• China is rebalancing from a period in which double digit growth was driven by exports to an economy that is increasingly driven by consumption.

• China’s unemployment rate is low, job creation is strong (driven largely by the consumer sector), and household income and income per capita are both growing.

• In discussions about the challenges facing China’s stock market it is important to remember that it is a very young market compared to the US or UK

• A major challenge of China’s stock market is the lack of institutional investors. 20% of the Chinese market is made up of institutional investors, compared with two thirds in the US. There is an enforcement issue at play, as currently, the individual investors can sometimes infringe the rules with few consequences. Accuracy and transparency are needed to surmount this and to attract more international and institutional investors.

• The reform of State Owned Enterprises unlocked enormous economic value in the UK and there is a big question mark over whether China can replicate this model. In China, the private sector is still forming, capital markets are only 20 years old and incentives will be critical to ensuring the successful reform of China’s SOEs.

Robert Zoellick, World Bank president from 2007-12, shared his views on growth and trade, particularly with regard to China.

His insights on world growth included:

• Geopolitical and macro-economic concerns continue, including uncertainty over the outcome of the EU Referendum in the UK.

• Policymakers are having trouble balancing short-term bolstering measures with long-term structural reforms.

• Populist politicians have emerged, in part because people feel the government is not taking enough action.

• Technology and digitization are driving profound systemic changes. We need to help people adapt to change. But it would be a mistake to try to restrict markets.

• We need a handoff from extraordinary monetary policies to private sector-led growth. At a country level, investors want to see structural reforms to boost productivity and potential growth. At a company level, investors want to see earnings.

Robert also shared his views on China:

• As China undergoes structural reforms it must continue its great success in taking people out of poverty. One way is to remove impediments to opportunity.

• China’s debt has increased significantly. The Chinese private sector is critical as China faces a bumpy deceleration.

• China has made progress on tax and financial sector reform. We can also expect more action on the environment and social welfare objectives. The issues of overcapacity, State-owned enterprises, hukou reform, and land reform are preceding more incremental experiments and pilots.

• Reformers hope to use the internationalization of the RMB and movement toward an open capital account to produce internal change, but these steps come with potential risks and other stakeholders fear loss of control.

• China’s One Belt One Road initiative and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank are significant developments.

• But in reforms, loss of control is an issue. If markets play a dominant role, the government is going to have to give up some control, particularly in financial markets.

• Free information flow is essential to making some reforms. Foreign investors are concerned about transparency.

• He senses that younger Chinese, and some successful businesspeople, are drawn to social enterprises. They offer much potential for China and the world.

• For young Chinese people the opportunities are very exciting.

Steve Wozniak, one of the original disruptors of the information age, was interviewed by Patrick Winter, EY Asia-Pacific Deputy Area Managing Partner. The engineer behind the groundbreaking Apple II computer, Steve started a personal computing revolution that turned Apple into a household name and led to its rise as one of the world’s most valuable companies.

The talk emphasized that while we can’t necessarily predict which innovation will be the next disruptive force, we can create a culture of innovation in our schools, organizations, and societies.

Other takeaways from the interview include:

• Self-driving vehicles may be a key disruptor in the future, with the potential to bring sweeping changes to the transportation sector as well as related industries like insurance.

• The key to building a successful brand is a commitment to releasing products that developers would want to use themselves — products that don’t just make money but also defy expectations.

• Firms should employ a “Chief Disruption Officer” accountable to the board, not the CEO, to think 10 to 20 years ahead and prepare the organization to adapt to potentially disruptive forces.

• To drive innovation, firms should treat their employees more like a family and encourage profit sharing to retain key talent. Companies should embrace motivated, talented, young people regardless of their educational background.

• While there are still barriers to wider acceptance of women studying and working in science and technology, parents can bring cultural change by encouraging their daughters to step outside the traditional gender expectations.

Under the “new normal” of slowing economic growth in China, traditional and emerging industries are facing new opportunities and challenges in transforming and upgrading. Panelists shared their insights and advice on the current business environment:

• Return to product-based and quality improvement — Now is the time to re-emphasize technology and to steadfastly develop core technologies. Companies need to underscore the importance of upgrading the technological content of their products and enhancing company productivity through improving precision, professionalism and reliability. With better quality products and technological innovation, companies become more competitive.

• Seize the opportunities brought by the internet — Fully leverage big data to improve your business model and ultimately enhance services to end users and improve their customer experience. Meanwhile, invest in the development of smart production and smart living.

• Fulfill corporate responsibility — During the process of innovation, companies should not focus only on profits, but also fulfilling their corporate responsibility to provide an ethical service and drive genuine societal and economic development.

The advent of the “One Belt One Road” strategy has accelerated the pace of outbound investment of Chinese enterprises and capital. Guests and panelists shared their views on unfolding development opportunities and provided their practical insights in overcoming the potential risks in overseas investment.

• Equipment manufacturing industries in China need to achieve first-class standard internationally before they develop overseas. While focusing on home-grown technology development, they may also consider acquiring high-end technologies through overseas acquisitions.

• China’s Investment in overseas infrastructure closely follows the strategic plan of “One Belt One Road” and the global flow of funds. This means that industry should actively pursue overseas business.

• Political factors are the highest risk that companies could face when investing in developing and less developed regions. Comprehensive assessment of political risk is necessary and effective preventive measures needed to be put in place.

• When considering raising capital overseas, Chinese enterprises may leverage the strengths of a variety of channels, including mainland Chinese banks, overseas banks and China credit insurance.

• When investing overseas, Chinese privately-owned enterprises need to assess their interest, in both the short and long term, and to strive to improve the three areas of quality, talents and funds.

• Sino-British cooperation is entering a “golden age”. The two countries should have all-round strategic cooperation in various areas globally.

Financial and capital markets are key to economic development. They will play an increasingly important role in the “new normal” phase of China’s economic development. In this plenary panel, participants shared their insights on how to strengthen such roles of the financial and capital markets:

• Increasing the proportion of direct financing — Use diverse financing channels to invest in enterprises and enhance their vitality. The increased financing capabilities of the capital market provides support to the growth of the industry, and drives innovation and reform of enterprises.

• Improvement of the IPO system — The implementation of a registration-based initial public offering (IPO) system in China has experienced some delay. It will take time before measures for the improvement of the capital market can be implemented. To establish a sound IPO system, regulators need to have an unconventional mindset. A process-oriented and rule-based IPO will be attractive to enterprises.

• Behavioral change — Chinese institutional investors are massive in scale but their investment behavior is similar to that of individual investors, focusing mainly on making short-term profit. Measures to improve corporate governance and to change the investment mentality of institutional investors will give rise to a more mature investor base similar to the more developed markets.

• Development of the New Third Board — The establishment of the National Equities Exchange and Quotations (NEEQC) (“New Third Board”) in China as a financing platform for start-ups and springboard to IPO is a good development. Different types of companies should be allowed to enter the platform to help discover the value that variety brings and attract capital investment to these companies.

Private Public Partnerships (PPP) have been widely used in China since the early 1990s in transport, communication, energy and clean water. They have a key role in addressing the challenges arising from rapid urbanization, helping to deliver faster and smarter infrastructure. If designed well, PPP help to fill the investment gap as well as improve the quality and return on these projects whilst meeting the high expectations of the private sector.

During this session, our panelists discussed ways to improve the PPP market in China and how to better investors’ perceptions to make it more attractive:

• Private companies and the government will both need to establish a robust evaluation mechanism for PPP projects. This mechanism should also be applied to evaluate the quality and capability of the intermediates.

• Adopt a more market-driven approach in pricing and financing arrangements. Leverage market forces as far as possible to guarantee reasonable returns for investors.

• Improve the quality of deliverables at the project identification and preparation stages and showcase successful cases internationally to attract global players to the Chinese PPP market.

• Adopt an integrated management of private capital, government funding and public resources to increase the financing capability success rate of the projects.

Innovation is considered a driver for development. However, one year into policy changes on innovation funding, how has China’s government-led drive to boost entrepreneurship and innovation on a mass scale fared?

While there is no doubt that the environment in China for innovation and start-ups has improved in recent years, during a lively discussion, panelists agreed that challenges still exist.

• The commercialization of innovation is vital and will involve more synergy between policy makers, money lenders and scientists. With an innovation transition rate which is significantly lower than countries like the US, China still has some way to go.

• Motivation for innovation is only part of the equation, tangible policies and measures are also vital. While there has been a rapid rise in expenditure on R&D by government and business, there is still too much emphasis on equity instead of efficiency.

• Private resources need to be better allocated so that entrepreneurs can be properly rewarded and innovative ideas can be successfully commercialized.

• Panelists all agreed that while innovation starts with technology and capital, it also involves culture and the cultivation and education of talent. For innovation to succeed, talent in China will need to adopt a curiosity and a higher tolerance for failure.

Government leaders, academics, scientists and representatives of leading global companies joined a panel exploring tomorrow’s planet. During the session, panelists discussed:

• Developing renewable energy requires the support of policies, industries and consumers — To realize the commercial and economic benefits of renewable energy, companies need government support through policies and subsidies. Government support enables renewable energy companies to assume social responsibility and operate profitably.

Changing the consumer mindset to focus on a sustainable future and not just the short-term interest is also required.

• Abundant opportunities in the renewable energy industry — The outlook is favorable for the renewable energy industry, however there is also potential in cleaning traditional energy. Companies also need to explore how to balance investment and improve the management of corporate returns.

• Green finance will be helpful to renewable industry development — The positive image of green industries may attract capital market investment. A fast track, provided by the regulatory institutions, as well as potential supporting subsidies or tax concessions, could also be leveraged to accelerate the funding.

Key insights from this session include:

• Humans should not be threatened by technology, survival depends on how humans adapt. Thoughts and ideas still have an edge over computers. Focus on how technology makes life better, more efficient and how it coexists and interacts with humans.

• Maintaining competitiveness is critical. Spend time understanding the customer base, not just marketing the product. If technology enables the customer need, it will drive adoption.

• The current opportunity is in connectivity and networking. As shopping patterns evolve, continuously challenge how technology can enable not only laborious tasks but other aspects of life. Use a variety of channels to capture consumers that are segmented by interests and geographies.

• Make deliberate choices that challenge business models. Think carefully about investments and funding as artificial intelligence is capital intensive. Find investors who balance the importance of making money with achieving the company’s mission.

How do family businesses create long lasting success? This question formed the foundation for an insightful discussion between family business leaders and specialists on how growth can create a sustainable business for future generations.

Family businesses and their leaders can be considered the ultimate entrepreneurs. They must continually innovate to grow and pass on a thriving business from one generation to the next. However panelists were quick to point out that although it’s important for family businesses to adapt, they must also be conscious of their values.

The panel discussion took a deep dive into three key success factors of large, long-lived family businesses, offering great insights and takeaways:

• Succession — Work steadily to prepare the next generation for leadership and clearly define who has the responsibility for succession.

• Governance — Implement governance agreements such as a mission statement, bylaws, family charter and family constitution.

• Women in leadership — Create a welcoming and inclusive environment and consider women family members for leadership positions.

While some cultural nuances do exist, these success factors serve not only as a model for other family businesses but for all companies that aspire to maintain an entrepreneurial spirit, innovate and grow consistently. Successful family businesses have managed to integrate these imperatives to create a lasting legacy of entrepreneurial success and family unity.

Four successful entrepreneurs shared how they turned their ideas into successful, sustainable ventures that are household names in China and abroad. The panel spoke openly about what triggered them to become entrepreneurs, the challenges of starting a business and what makes them successful.

Their insights highlighted common themes for sustainable business success:

• Resilience — All businesses face adversity at some point along their journey. It is important to learn from these challenges and then improve.

• Differentiate — Establish a competitive advantage by finding something that makes you unique and non-reproducible in the market.

• Reputation — It can define business success or failure. Reputation is critical to create a track record of high-quality and reliability with customers and potential investors.

• Be cautious with your cash flow — It will not only insulate a business against any surprise problems and potential insolvency, but will also enable it to expand its operations.

• Stay relevant — In an ever-evolving business environment, entrepreneurs need to actively adjust their strategies and management style to take advantage of social and digital disruption.

With an aging population and demand for health management on the rise, there is excellent market potential for investment in the healthcare industry.

The panelists of this session provided their insights on the opportunities both now and in the future:

• Mobile health care — Leverage online medical services, mobile technology and mobile medical equipment to speed up the provision of medical information and services, and to meet the increasing demand for healthcare services.

• Precise medical service — Leverage big data to develop high-quality medical technology based on in-depth knowledge of patients, diseases and medicine, and to identify the most suitable treatment based on patients’ specific medical needs.

• Integration of prevention and health maintenance — Incidents of chronic disease are increasing. Disease prevention and routine health maintenance is becoming increasingly important. Real-time attention to health indicators and early prevention and discovery of diseases helps to lower medical costs and increase treatment rates. Mobile technology has already become a promising platform for disease prevention as its widespread use will provide help to an increasing number of people.

Sixteen high-growth startups chosen from more than 100 applicants joined Strategic Growth Forum China in the inaugural Asia-Pacific Accelerating Entrepreneurs program. These individuals, founders and CEOs — of dynamic, high-growth companies, spent three days networking, connecting with potential investors and partners, and raising their profile.

As well as attending Strategic Growth Forum, the group visited a start-up incubator site where they met angel investors and heard from some of the incubator’s portfolio companies. FinTech entrepreneurs met and networked with some of China’s leading FinTech startups, corporate players and key industry participants.

Unique experiences included meeting with 2016 Asia-Pacific EY Entrepreneurial Winning Women™ winner, Lauren Hall, the CEO of iVvy Corporate, who shared her journey to success. She highlighted the need to use market research to validate your proposition and to surround yourself with a great team.

The highlight was a small group meeting with Steve Wozniak, Co-founder of Apple Inc, who posed for a group and individual photographs with each of the entrepreneurs.

FinTech Connector participants represented a cross-section of the FinTech ecosystem in China and Asia-Pacific including incumbents, unicorns, fintechs, innovators, international banks and JV partnerships. The robust discussion covered areas including key drivers, fund raising, future segments and products, anticipated regulatory changes and internationalization. Keynote presentations from representatives of Shanghai Huarui Bank and Shanghai Pudong International Finance Institute outlined how the disruption created by FinTechs is impacting incumbents in the China market and what can be expected in the next wave of change.

The event concluded with a panel discussion including some of the pre-eminent names in China FinTech innovation including PingAn, Lufax, Santander and Standard Chartered Bank. The panel agreed that China is seen by the rest of the world as a key FinTech frontier with examples of non-traditional banking platforms including Alibaba’s Alipay and Tencent’s WeChat Pay highlighting the opportunity for non-traditional financial services organizations.

The family business breakfast briefing brought together business owners and EY professionals to share the findings of EY’s recent study on family business philanthropy. The study, based on a survey of 200 large family businesses globally was the first of its kind.

Following a presentation of the main findings, EY Global Family Business Leader, Peter Englisch and Prof. Bernhard Lorentz, a partner of EY Germany, responded to questions from the audience. The lively debate explored how organized philanthropy is beginning to develop in China and is an invaluable tool to help family cohesion — a predictor of family business success. Families are now keen to learn more and receive proper guidance on how best to structure and pursue their philanthropic efforts.

EY has recently developed a holistic and service line integrated approach on family business philanthropy.

A number of our EY family business leaders and professionals from Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America, were also engaged in private one to one meetings with Chinese and international participants to have discussions on key topics related to family business, such as succession planning, next generation education, family and private wealth management.

Creating a favorable ecosystem for electric vehicle (EV) deployment in urban contexts could prove transformational for automotive companies, related industries and the community at large. EVs bring a unique societal advantage to urban life through improved energy management and other resourceful ways.

EV industry leaders discussed how cities can be at the forefront of creating the demand for EVs in their jurisdictions. Digital media helps to substantially reduce the costs that would typically be spent on multiple channels, but at the same time, it brings even more challenges when it comes to disseminating content. The reform of China’s free trade zones (FTZ) accelerated in 2015 following international and domestic changes, including RMB internationalization, the implementation of the “One Belt One Road” strategy and China’s economy entering the “new normal”.

Speeding up the implementation of China’s FTZ strategy will not only address the need to adapt to the economic globalization trend, but also provide the impetus to fully deepen reform and construct an open economic system.

FTZ leaders from both financial and non-financial areas shared their insights on the future direction of China’s FTZs and how they can link with China’s reformation in finance, real economy and investment. The participants also offered solutions to the difficulties and challenges faced by today’s entrepreneurs.

The EY Growth Navigator™ booth provided a unique and interactive client experience, by giving clients the opportunity to see how the tool can help to assess their company’s capability to implement growth strategies across the EY 7 Drivers of Growth. By charting their company’s position against these drivers, business leaders can gauge performance in line with leading practices and create an action plan to help accelerate growth. Many visitors to the booth requested a follow-up session to cover the drivers in depth.

The EY digital maturity booth offered delegates an opportunity to discuss digital disruption and transformation. The booth featured EY’s digital maturity tools, helping visitors to check and standardize the digital maturity of their own organization. Discussions focused on each visitor’s digital questions and challenges and digital marketing was a common theme.

Overall delegates were interested to hear EY’s point of view and were excited to learn about EY’s holistic approach to digital that looks across the organization and considers more than just cyber. Visitors were keen to hear more about EY’s capabilities and experiences and took the opportunity to arrange follow-up meetings.

EY welcomed a new class of entrepreneurial winning women, as well as past alumnae, to the annual Asia-Pacific flagship conference held in Shanghai this year. It’s the second year of the Entrepreneurial Winning Women (EWW) Asia-Pacific program.

Sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank, the EY Entrepreneurial Winning Women™ Asia-Pacific program is an executive leadership program that identifies a select group of high-potential women entrepreneurs whose businesses show real potential to scale — and then helps them do it. The annual, year-long program is designed for women with established businesses who are ready to scale operations and grow to become global market leaders.

The 2016 participants contributed enormous economic value in Asia-Pacific, generating US$5.5b in combined 2015 revenues. This year, the 2016 class of 15 Asia-Pacific women entrepreneurs came from Australia, China, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia and for the first time, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Among the group was an Australian helicopter pilot who started her own academy, an Indonesian batik lover who created her own retailing enterprise, and pioneers in the foodservice, mining and agriculture sectors from China, Malaysia and the Philippines.

One of the goals of the program is to build a strong and supportive network of women entrepreneurs. Several from the inaugural winning women class chose to return to the event to reconnect with each other, signaling the strength of the alumnae and the program.

This year’s event culminated in the winning women being formally recognized infront of 900 delegates at Strategic Growth Forum China 2016. This helped the entrepreneurs build their profile and connect with potential investors and other business partners.

Also launched at the event was the co-branded report, ‘What helps women entrepreneurs globally scale their businesses’ a report of key behaviors impacting the progress of women-led businesses in Asia-Pacific. It was based on a survey of 143 female entrepreneurs and interviews with the winning women at the conference.
