O ângulo de mergulho de falhas reversas é maior que 45º . A seta vermelha representa a posição de Sigma1, a seta azul a de Sigma 3, Sigma 2 é horizontal e está contido no plano de falha.

Os empurrões mostram planos de falha com mergulho inferior a 45º, geralmente de 30º. Um dobramento é formado no teto (bloco superior) e o relevo é soerguido nesta área.

Alguns empurrões não chegam a atingir a superfície, onde podem ocorrer dobramentos. Neste caso e falha é chamada de “empurrão cego” (blind thrust).

A sequência ao lado mostra a evolução de um dobramento até a formação de um empurrão. Quando as dobras não mais acomodam a deformação, um plano de falha é formado para acomodar o movimento.

The edge of the Himalayan mountain range in Pakistan. Here a thrust at the bottom of the scarp caried up sediments (as old as Cambrian in age) onto detritus deposited by rivers.
A pop-up structure carried on a back-thrust/fore-thrust couplet. The result is a hanging slice of rock. The image here shows pop-up stacking of the Cretaceous Urgonian limestone (seen in the Bornes gorge, NW French Subalps), which forms cliffs about 200m high
