CURRICULARCONNECTIONSA RESOURCE FOR THE DARTMOUTH COMMUNITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN DARTMOUTH CLASSES AND HOPKINS CENTER EVENTS
Fall 2015

“I loved hearing [the artist’s] perspective and think his talk was one of the most memorable that I’ve seen. I love inferring the cultural differences from a talk like his. I loved the message of the power of music and it’s impact on global health! He was a great storyteller, which is what humans crave – in addition to music! Music’s power in global health is something that may be overlooked but I felt was powerful in his talk!”
Julia Weber ‘15INTS 17/GEO 2: Global Health and Society
“Not only did [Hop artist Tanya Tagaq] fit into the landscape we were studying last week (Arctic), but [the artist] was also able to bring to the class a discussion of culture and social issues—oppression, inequality, etc. of the indigenous Inuit culture of northern Canada. I thought that was extremely eye-opening and brave of her to step out and
vocalize the causes she fights for.”

The Hopkins Center is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL) to support faculty who include Hop programming in their syllabi. In recognition of the unique experiential value that the performing arts bring to classroom curriculum, DCAL will underwrite the ticket costs for your class to attend a Hop Visiting Artist, Student Ensemble or Theater Department performance, or MET Opera and National Theatre Live HD broadcast. If your students are required to attend the Hop event—and there are no departmental or other funds to cover ticket costs—you are eligible for support from the DCAL/Hop Experiential Learning Fund, now in its pilot phase. Funding is first-come, first-served and includes your faculty ticket. You and your students may be invited to reflect on the experiential learning value of the experience afterwards.
With Dartmouth’s renewed focus on the value of experiential learning, the Hop is excited to continue exploring the many ways that the arts serve as a tool for active learning—making abstract concepts visible and physical, engaging with real-world problems and giving students an opportunity to reflect on their learning. If you haven’t already discovered how the Hop can support teaching and learning on campus, we encourage you to take advantage of our world-class performances and films as an educational tool for your students. Consider this Curricular Connections Guide your invitation! DID YOU KNOW?
• Many of the artists listed are available for workshops, discussions, meals and class visits. The Hop can provide supplemental resources, including articles, program notes, videos and more. Contact us for information about arranging a meeting with your students.
• You can hold a block of tickets for purchase by your class by emailing the Hopkins Center Box Office at [email protected]. Subject to availability and some restrictions, each faculty member bringing a class to a performance will receive one FREE TICKET to the show for him/herself.
• Free, public programs accompany many Hop performances. Most do not require a reservation, but let us know if you are bringing a group of students and we will be happy to make accommodations.

taylor MacA 24-DecADe History of PoPulAr Music: 1776-1806
Thursday, september 17The Moore Theater •7pm
Taylor Mac aims an incomparable voice and high-voltage stage presence at our nation’s first three decades in this merry mash-up of music, history and performance art. Clad in glittering, over-the-top drag, Mac unveils hidden queer histories through period songs and playful but trenchant commentary. Part of what will become an epic show covering 1776 to the present, it’s an exhilarating three-hour ride courtesy of a boundary-breaking, audience-enlisting, gleefully subversive theatrical imagination. May contain adult language/themes.

This Grammy-winning band traverses a musical landscape as diverse as its home base of LA, churning together cumbia, tango, rock, rumba, jazz and even klezmer into its own brand of joyfully explosive international pop. Featuring accordion, guitar and percussion behind the vocals of the soulful and charismatic Marisol Hernández (“a belter, a crooner, a seductress”—Boston Globe), La Santa Cecilia is an emerging musical face of young Latinos—and a poignant voice for immigration reform.

As though it was always destined to be, powerhouse jazz trio The Bad Plus finds its fated fourth member in longtime friend and collaborator, saxophonist Joshua Redman. Redman’s melodic prowess blends seamlessly with the “avant-gardepopulism” of Reid Anderson, Ethan Iverson and David King—pushing the boundaries of jazz. Metroland describes the supergroup best: “Imagine if the Beatles had spent the first decade of their career as a trio before adding Paul. It’s like that.”

Stravinsky’s ballet score shocked the audience at its 1913 Paris premiere, inspiring a riot now legendary in the annals of the performing arts. Its complicated rhythms and bracing harmonies revolutionized music and set a new standard for symphonic playing. The DSO tackles this seminal work for the first time—a landmark achievement for any young ensemble—as well as Beethoven’s majestic fifth piano concerto, which embodies the composer’s heroic, individualistic spirit.

“I did think I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God himself,” Handel is reported to have said when he began work on what would become one of the most loved and performed musical works of all time: Messiah. Aided by top-flight soloists and a full orchestra, this town-gown chorus of 100 leads us through the dramatic progression of movement—tranquil, thunderous, playful and exultant.
