The Purrfect Way to Spend Your Day…With a Book

Bookfest 2013

DIRECTOR’S LETTER

Are you aware that The Discovery Center is on the threshold of a thirty year celebration? How many of you can remember the day in 1984 when the Junior League andThe Imagination Builders opened the door to the gymnasium in the Christopher Columbus School and presented the areas FIRST children’s museum? It was instant interest and success. Clever, interactive, colorful, busy, and full of exciting activities. It

was well attended and, all of a sudden, we needed more space, more parking, more comforts. Somehow weacquired a maintenance building in Ross Park! What a find! Rusty, filled with debris, lots of junk, old vehicles, broken windows and ….a breathtaking view and natural terrain. Two loyal community persons assumed thefunding task and raised enough to recycle the building. What a gift! In 1987 we were ready for occupancy!Occupancy turned into dreams, dreams turned into accomplishments, accomplishments turned into confidence and we are still creating programs and exhibits that defy the imagination and excite every visitor. And,it only gets better! Over 30 years we have assembled a super staff; we have found aides, volunteers, professionals, consultants, good community friends, a variation of human resources, loyal funders and an enormous cheering section to help us along the way. We now can boast being a center for engagement; we havean inside space full of wonder and delight; we have extended outward to include a campus that offers a PlayNice Playground; a Solar House and our well loved Story Garden, a one of a kind interactive outdoor environment based on stories of the woods, ponds, trees, gardens and water. Meet Peter Rabbit, join the ThreeBears; nestle in the Secret Garden; sit in a boat; smell the flowers, dream your dream and nostalgically remember special people who have contributed something special along the way.We celebrate thirty years with pride, anticipation and grateful thanks to everyone of you who, through thebest and worst of times, have supported us, encouraged us, donated time and thoughts to us and have comeback to visit us because you love us and believe in us!! Make 2014 a year to join in a most happy celebration. And help me celebrate my 25TH year watching a miracle unfold.

Thank you one and all,
