MISSION STATEMENT

To streamline biological cell sorting by creating a cost-effective custom designed device to improve both product collection and cell

viability

STEM CELLS

• Unspecified cells capable of self-renewing and producing specialized cells through differentiation

• The capability of differentiating into one of the 220 different cells in the body

• Research on stem cells is very important for Tissue Engineering and Drug testing

• Stem Cells need to be first sorted due to cell population puritySharkis et al., Sci Transl Med 2012

FLOW CYTOMETRY

• Measures cells or particles in liquid suspension

• Collects quantitative and qualitative data

• BD Flow Cytometry Aria Cell Sorter (FACS)

• Allows for up to 4-5 streams of separation

• Runs for hours at a time, sorting millions of cells

Challenges

• Problem 1• BD Bioscience Test Tube Holders are

manufactured to only hold up to 3 collection sizes.

• Problem 2 • Cell Sorter is insufficient with mixing the

sheath fluid and the serum fluid together during the sorting process thus decreasing viability.

Solutions

Sheath Fluid

Serum/Cell Media

• Solution 1• Create a cost-effective test tube holder than

can hold more than 3 collection sizes.• Solution 2

• Implement a magnetic stirring plate onto the TestTube Holder to suspend both fluids.

CHALLENGE 1: DEVELOP A VARIABLE SIZE TEST TUBE HOLDER

• Test Tube Holders• 2x50mL • 1x50mL, 2x5mL• 2x15mL, 2x5mL

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

By creating a Cost-Effective Varied Test Tube Size Holder that also includes internal mixing capability we were able to improve cell sorting collection and potentially

increase cell viability. These designs are distributable and repeatable enough for any cell sorting facility to benefit from them.
