Accused of apostasy (formal disaf- filiation from or abandonment of a re- ligion by a person) for renouncing the Islamic faith, a Sudanese mother was sentenced to death for refusing to re- nounce her Christianity. Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag gave birth to a baby girl in a Khartoum prison hospital wing, on Wednesday, 27 May 2014. Sudanese authorities are allowing Ibrahim two years to nurse her daughter before they will carry out the death sentence. Meanwhile, according to reports, advocates decry the actions of the Sudanese govern- ment in convicting Ibrahim of apostasy and adultery, punishable by hanging and 100 lashes. So far, more than 620,000 actions have been taken via Amnesty International to ap- peal Ibrahim’s death sentence. A Change. org petition has gathered more than 414,000 signatures, while the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) has gathered more than 236,000 signatures. Meriam Yehya Ibrahim was raised as a Christian by an Orthodox Ethiopian Chris- tian mother. Her father, a Sudanese Muslim, was not involved in Ibrahim’s upbringing, and her Christian husband, wheelchair- bound Daniel Wani, insists that his wife is Christian. After proclaiming in court, “I am a Christian and I will remain a Christian,” Ibrahim was sentenced to death by hanging. She was also sentenced to a hundred lash- es for what the court considers adultery, with her husband. As Ibrahim and her family await the lengthy process of appealing for her innocence, it is up to Christians all over the world to pray and advocate for those who are suffering for their faith.
