President’s Message – Ray Shute
I hope everyone had a very Happy and Joyous Holiday season and that you were able to enjoy
the holidays, and perhaps ”recharge your batteries”, so you are ready for the New Year and the New
Decade. It is hard to believe that we have already passed the 1st
decade of the 21st
century. Your Chicago
section technical programming committee has been working hard on the schedule and has finalized our
programming for the balance of the SPE year. We hope that we have several meetings and topics that
will appeal to you.
We start the New Year off with the annual Section Educational Foundation / Suppliers Night on
February 22. This event will be held at the Holiday Inn – Itasca (for additional information and
registration forms, check out the rest of this newsletter). Please be sure to attend to show your support
for the Educational Foundation and the funds that this event provides for our future members of SPE.
On March 9th
, we are planning on a technical meeting and dinner, Mold Filling & Structural Analysis Case
Studies, presented by Rick Fischer. For April 13th
, we have lined up some Bio-Plastic companies to
educate us on bio-plastics and their applications in today’s world. May 11th
, we will host our Awards
Night where we will be honoring our past presidents and those hard working individuals that keep your
Section running. We are hoping to have a political speaker for that evening’s event. Of course, in June
we will be back on the course for our Annual Golf Outing, which will again be held at White Pines Golf
Club during June. Check our out website for further details about these meetings.
Once again, I challenge you to get involved with your local Chicago Section as we attempt to
provide you with strong, technical programs and opportunities for social networking in a relaxed forum.
This is your section and we need your help to make it meaningful, useful and relevant for you to
participate in and realize the benefits of your SPE membership.
We can certainly use a little help with running the Section, so if you have a little time each
month that you could volunteer to a great cause, please contact me or any of the other board members.
Please read the monthly newsletters, check the website, and attend the meetings so we can grow the
Section and make it meaningful to you, our members.
Our next board of directors meetings will be held right before the Educational Foundation
meeting on Monday, February 22 and you are always welcome to join us and participate in the planning
for upcoming events. Future board of directors meetings will move to the 2nd
Tuesday of the month,
immediately preceding our Section Meeting. Give us a call or check out the website
http://www.4spe.org/technical-groups/sections/chicago.
Looking forward to seeing you on the 22nd
of February at the Holiday Inn – Itasca for our Educational
Foundation’s Annual Suppliers Night and Expo.

Social Chair News – Matt Johnson
Thinking Summer
We had a great turnout for last fall’s golf outing and the feedback was good as well. That
doesn’t mean it can’t get better! Please send any and all suggestions my way and we’ll make
this year’s (June) outing the best we’ve had in years.
