  • June 2011 Section Meeting at California Steel Ind. update On Thursday June 30th, 2011, Members from the AWS Los Angeles & Inland Empire Section gathered at California Steel Industries. Richard Conti and other staff members graciously hosted our June 2011 Section Meeting at their Plant in Fontana, CA., just next door to the Cali-fornia Speedway. We watched a short film presentation about the company, and then had the privilege of touring the hot strip mill where steel slab, red hot out of the oven passes through a series of rollers and ends up as a final product, steel plate or rolls of sheet steel. It was an amazing experience, and we are most grateful to California Steel Industries and their employees, as we were then treated with a fantastic Mexican buffet dinner, prepared by their Chefs, at their cafeteria. Our usual raffle produced many happy winners Salvador Luna won an AWS D1.5:2010 Bridge Welding Code Book, Jonathan Saltzman made out with some $125 in cash prize and other goodies, plus AWS Limited Edi-tion T-Shirts and many other prized were awarded. It was quite fun and most definitely an educational & rewarding experi-ence.

    A Reminder that:

  • Other Past Section Meetings On September 15, 2011 we received our AWS President John L. Mendoza and his lovely wife of thirty-seven-years Nora at a banquet in Corona, California. Mr. Mendoza is a CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) and an educator. It was Mr. Mendozas goal to inform the Los Angeles/Inland

Empire section of the historical foundation and achievements of the AWS/CWI Certification Program through its affiliation with volunteerism.

AWS was founded in 1919 and the CWI Certification program was founded in 1976, it since has become an industry standard for the past thirty-

five years. Prior to the CWI certification process, testing welding reliability was conducted with a ring test. If a hammer hit the weld and the

ring sounded good, it was passed through. In October of 1975 the AWS Board of Directors came together and implemented a revolutionary

concept, QA = the quality assurance approach. During the time frame of 1976 to 1986 AWS was low on funds and seeking acceptance to become

a CWI. In order to achieve more financial stability AWS had to raise it membership dues. By 1976 AWS had created nine copies of the D1.1 Struc-

tural Welding Code book. Our president believes that the D1.1 Structural Welding Code book put AWS on the map. There are 300 to 400 com-

mittees who volunteer by writing codes and working on documents. Mr. Mendoza conveyed that volunteerism is a big part of AWS and that our

main strength is comprised of volunteers. AWS consist of five national officers, three vice-presidents and a treasurer whom all volunteer. AWS is a

cutting edge organization that has grown exponentially to encompass 68,000 members worldwide. Today, AWS has the worlds premiere CWI pro-

gram and is recognized and respected in countless countries. AWS/CWI operates on a strict code of ethics integrity and responsibility. CWI certifi-

cation is not just a trade but a skill and Mr. Mendoza believes the people with professional qualifications and membership in a professional associ-

ation achieve higher earnings and higher employment rates over a lifetime, and that credentials open doors. One CWI was proud to announce that

he earns more than his relatives with MBAs and at one time they ridiculed him for choosing his welding profession. Today he smiles all the way to

the bank. Some of the perks of having sound credentials is working your way up the AWS ladder as President Mendoza has. Because of his hard

work ethic he now enjoys international travel, as our AWS President.

While we thoroughly enjoyed our visit with the President and his wife we also enjoyed the prime rib and tri-tip dinner prepared at Mill Creek Res-

taurant. Jimmy Caro a student from Los Angeles Trade Tech was our big winner for the evening. He received a D.1.1 Structural Welding Code

book and the $53.00 cash prize.
