Enhancing the quality of serving Fire professionals in both public and private sectors, to be more competent in discharging their duties and be academically prepared for the future study of Foundation Degree in Fire Safety Engineering.

Equipping the students with the necessary competencies in English language, fundamental mathematics and science knowledge for their further study or job advancement in other engineering or technological sectors.

Progression Pathway

Fire Science IThis module aims to impart students with general fire science knowledge.

Mathematics 1This module will enable the students to appropriately use modern technology to do mathematics. The module is designed to develop the students’ general abilities in numerical and spatial reasoning, to enable the students to practice solving applied mathematical problems and to prepare them for further progress to study Mathematics 2.

English Academic SkillsThe module aims to develop students’ communicative competence through an integrated approach. All the four English skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing will be introduced. Both accuracy and fluency in using English as a second or foreign language will be emphasized.

Fire Science IIThis module covers the introduction of the essential domains of fire engineering, such as fire protection systems, fire risk management, relevant legislation, laws and regulations and human psychology in fire and emergency situations.

Mathematics 2This module will establish fundamental mathematical skills and provide a framework of mathematical techniques. The module is designed to help the students lay a solid foundation in mathematics, to develop the students’ abilities in applying basic mathematical techniques in future work in business and industry and to prepare them for further progress to study higher level modules in universities.

Critical English Communication SkillsThe aims of the course are to develop students’ critical thinking ability through reading, writing and discussing current local and international issues. Through the interactive process, students will learn to express, show agreement, disagreement their opinions on a variety of topics. This critical examination of contemporary issues will help them to understand other people’s views, generate their own ideas, gain deeper insights as well as improve their English proficiency.

Programme OutlineIntroduction Fire engineering is a recently emerged discipline worldwide. SCOPE is currently running a series of Fire Engineering Programmes offered by the University of Central Lancashire (UK), namely MSc in Fire Safety Engineering, MSc in Fire Scene Investigation, BEng (Hons) Fire Engineering and Foundation Degree in Science in Fire Safety Engineering (FDSc). To prepare mature working adults for entry into the FDSc, SCOPE is also offering the Certificate in Fire Science Studies.

Duration and Study Mode1-year Part time

Programme Aims & ObjectivesThis programme intends to benefit the students who are either currently serving in Fire related industry, or who are planning to pursue further study or job advancement in other engineering or technological industries. Adhering to this belief, this programme aims at

After the completion of this programme, students would be able to:

Acquire the necessary academic background for attending the Foundation Degree in Fire Safety Engineering;

Apply basic knowledge in mathematics, fire chemistry, and physics and psychology for college level fire engineering study; and

Read and write competently in English.

Programme CurriculumThe programme consists of 6 modules with a total of 270 contact hours, each module consists of 45 contact hours, to be completed in 3 phases in one year part-time study.
