Bei der letzten EM in Kreuth ging die Gold-medaille bei den Senioren (Mannschaft und Einzel) und bei den Jungen Reitern an Gastgeber Deutschland. Italien errang Mannschaftsgold bei den Junioren sowie Einzelgold bei den Jungen Reitern. Uns erwarten in den nächsten Tagen span-nende Wettkämpfe und sicherlich herausra-gende Ritte. Das deutsche Team wird alles daran setzen, zum vierten Mal Gold mit der Mannschaft zu erringen. Sie muss sich jedoch hochkarätiger Konkurrenz stellen; der Druck wird ungeheuer groß sein.

Ich wünsche allen Teilnehmern viel Erfolg in dieser Woche.

Den Organisatoren, Offiziellen, Pferdebe-sitzern, Sponsoren und Zuschauern sowie den vielen Freiwilligen, ohne die dieses Event nicht möglich wäre, sende ich die besten Wünsche für eine gelungene Eu-ropameisterschaft, die ganz im Sinne von Kameradschaft, Fairness und Horseman-ship steht.

On behalf of the Fédération Equestre In-ternationale, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the FEI European Reining Championships for Seniors, Young Riders and Juniors 2011 at Wiener Neustadt, Aus-tria. Some time ago there were already 10 nations listed to start in this event which will showcase the top European athletes and horses in this popular and ever-gro-wing sport.

At Kreuth in Germany two years ago it was the host nation that dominated the team events when taking gold in both the Seni-or and Young Riders Championships while Italy claimed the Junior team honours. However the Italians were double-winners in the individual competitions, with gold in both the Junior and Young Rider divisions, leaving Germany’s Nina Lill to clinch the Senior title.

From July 26 until 28, 2011 beautiful Western Training Center H&D Schulz is the showcase of top quality rei-nings. The Who is Who of international reining is there presenting a very special horse event to visitors. We will see whether

the German team that earned team and in-dividual gold in 2009, will be able to repeat their success – or whether one of the other nations will be able to claim the prestigious title. Those who know the owner and host of this facility as well as the professional team of Gerda Langer, also know that this is going to be another perfectly organized show for exhibitors, horses and fans. A big thank you to all of the organizing team as well as all the helpers in the background. Without their dedication and great job they are doing, an event of this size could not be managed in Austria.Good luck to all the riders – may the best horse and rider win. And to you, dear visi-tors: great fun with this spectacular sport.

Senior athletes must achieve a minimum score in order to qualify for these Cham-pionships as either an individual or team member, and we can expect competition of the highest calibre over the next few days. The German team may prove difficult to beat as they strive for their fourth team gold but the opposition is expected to put them under plenty of pressure and they will need to perform their “patterns” to perfec-tion if they are to succeed.

I wish all the competitors the very best of luck ahead of this great week of sport.

And to the organisers, officials, supporters, horse-owners, spectators and the many volunteers without whose help this event could not take place, I send my best wishes for a thoroughly enjoyable Championship fixture, conducted in a spirit of comrade-ship and horsemanship.

Ralf Hesselschwerdt lebt in Zwingenberg an der hessischen Bergstrasse. Der Diplom Ingenieur für Architektur und Homöopath ist dem Westernreitsport seit über 20 Jahren verbunden. Er hat die Richter-karten der NRHA, AQHA und FEI. Zu den von ihm gerichteten Turnieren zählen die FEI WEG in Jerez 2002, Aachen 2006, Lexington 2010, die NRHA Futurity USA 2007, das Italian Reining Derby und Maturity, die NRHA European Affiliate Championships, das WRC Mooslargue, Tumbleweed Challenge und viele mehr.Ralf Hesselschwerdt comes from Zwingenberg. He is an engineer for architecture as well as a specialist of homoeopathy. Dr. Hilde Jarc (AUT)

Dr. Hilde Jarc ist seit etwa 40 Jahren in fast allen Sparten des Reitsports aktiv. Ihr größter sportlicher Erfolg war der Europameister Titel im Distanzreiten 1985. Die Chemikerin ist hauptberuflich im Ge-sundheitsministerium tätig und war mehr als 20 Jahre lang Referentin für Westernreiten in der öster-reichischen FN bis zur Aufnahme der Reining durch die FEI. Sie hat die NRHA und FEI Richterkarte und richtete u.a. die NRHA European Affiliate Championship 2007 sowie NRHA Shows und CRI in Österreich, Tschechien, Belgien und Dänemark. Dr. Hilde Jarc has been dedicated to almost all disciplines of riding for almost 40 years now. She was an European Champion long distance riding in 1985 herself. She is a chemist who works for the Austrian Ministry of Health. For more than 20 years, Dr. Hilde Jarc worked as an advisor for western riding in the Austrian National Federation. As an NRHA and FEI judge, her accomplishments includethe 2007 NRHA European Affiliate Championship as well as NRHA shows and CRI in Austria, Belgium, Denmark and the Czech Republic.

Rick Lemay (SWE)

Rick Lemay kommt aus Angelholm in Schweden. Der Profitrainer war unter anderem fünf Mal High Point Open Rider Scandinavian Reining Horse Assoc. und trainierte und showte viele Pferde zum Inter-national high point reining horse, zum Swedish Champion Reining und zum AQHA World Show Reining qualifier. Lemay ist seit vielen Jahren als AQHA, NRHA und FEI Richter und hat viele nationale und internationale Turniere gerichtet.Rick Lemay is from Angelholm in Sweden. He is an AQHA approved judge since 2003 as well as an experience NRHA and FEI judge. This accomplishments include five time high point open rider Scandi-navian Reining Horse Assoc.; International high point reining horse – ’96, ’98, ’99, ’00, ’01; Swedish Champion Reining – ’96 – ’02; AQHA World Show Reining qualifier – ’96-’00 & ’02. Rick Lemay has judged numerous top national and international events.

Francois Zurcher (SUI)

Francois Zurcher kommt aus Genf in der Schweiz. Der selbständige Steuerberater und Rechnungsprü-fer ist seit vielen Jahren als NRHA und FEI Richter tätig. U.a. hat er die NRHA Futurity USA (Oklaho-ma) gerichtet, die Belgium und French Futurity, das Italian Derby and Maturity, die NRHA European Futurity und die NRHA European Affiliate Championship, das CS Classic, die FEI European Reining Championship, die FEI World Reining Championship, das World Reining Masters, die Reining World Finals und viele CRI. Francois Zurcher is self employed as an accountant and tax adviser in Geneva, Switzerland. He is an experienced NRHA and FEI judge. His major shows include the NRHA Futurity USA (Oklahoma), the Belgium and French Futurity, Italian Derby and Maturity, NRHA European Futurity and NRHA Euro-pean Affiliate Championship, CS Classic, FEI European Reining Championship, FEI World Reining Championship, World Reining Masters, Reining World Finals and other miscellaneous CRI 1, 2, 3 and 4 *.

Der Mannschaftswettkampf der Junioren bildete den Auftakt der FEI Europamei-sterschaft Reining 2011 in Wiener Neu-stadt. 30 junge Reiterinnen und Reiter aus zehn Nationen traten gegeneinander an. Überlegener Sieger wurde schließlich die italienische Mannschaft bestehend aus Sara Ambrosini mit Maxplease, Lara Lo-rengo mit BH Shot O Lon, Nicolo Boretti mit Sun Olenas Red Chicka und Giovanni Masi mit Remins Remedy. Mit insgesamt 643 Punkten verwiesen sie Deutschland auf den zweiten Platz (628,5), gefolgt von den Holländern (616,5 Punkte). Mit 614 Punkten verpasste die lange führende ös-terreichische Mannschaft schließlich ganz knapp die Medaillenränge. Alisa Müller (GER) und Sparkling Cielo verschafften als sechste Starter mit einem 211er Score dem deutschen Team eine gute Ausgangsposition. Der Score sollte lange Zeit Spitze bleiben, bis Nicolo Boretti als 19. Starter einen Top Ritt hinlegte, wobei er insbesondere bei den Spins und Stops plussen konnte. 216 war das Ergebnis. Alissa Leloux (NED) und Little Smart Ja-meen folgten kurz darauf und sorgten mit einer 213 für den besten Ritt der Nieder-länder Junioren. Fabienne Krämer (GER) und ihre Stute Little Roosters Gal setzten als letzte deutsche Starter noch mal alles auf eine Karte, und die Bronzemedaillen-gewinnerin von 2009 enttäuschte nicht. 210,5 gab es für die beiden, was schließ-lich fünftbester Ritt sein sollte. Doch Itali-en hatte mit Giovanni Masi noch mit einem sehr starken letzten Reiter aufzuwarten, der sich auch nicht scheute, auf volles Risiko zu gehen. Er und sein American Quarter Horse-Hengst Remins Remedy konnten in praktisch jedem Manöver Pluspunkte sam-meln und beendeten ihren Ritt schließlich mit einer 220. Damit stand Gold für Italien

The 2011 European Reining Champion-ships in Wiener Neustadt started with the team competition in the Junior division – an outstanding presentation of 30 Junior riders from ten nations. In the end, team Italy claimed the gold medal: Sara Amb-rosini riding Maxplease, Lara Lorengo ri-ding BH Shot O Lon, Nicolo Boretti riding Sun Olenas Red Chicka and Giovanni Masi riding Remins Remedy scored a total of 643 points. Germany earned the silver me-dal (628.5) with The Netherlands earning bronze (616.5). Host nation Austria which had been leading for quite some time only missed the medal ranks by 2.5 points (total score 614).As sixth rider, Alisa Müller (GER) and Sparkling Cielo scored a 211 for Germa-ny which stayed highscore for quite some time. Then Nicolo Boretti from Italy rode Sun Olenas Red Chicka to a great 216, earning plus points especially for his fine spins and stops. Alissa Leloux (NED) and Little Smart Jameen followed some riders later scoring a 213 for the Dutch Juniors. The last German rider Fabienne Kramer (GER) and her mare Little Roosters Gal,

who had already won Bronze at the 2009 FEI EC, scored a 210.5 for Germany. But Italy still had one very strong rider left: Giovanni Masi and his American Quar-ter Horse stallion Remins Remedy risked everything. The two collected plus points in almost any maneuver scoring a 220 in the end – the junior competition’s high score! This was the team gold medal for Italy, which also has got four riders in the indi-vidual final. „I’m so glad about our success,“ Italy’s coach Filipo Masi said after the award presentation. „I knew I had four good ri-ders in the team, but with the exception of Giovanni, they had no experience in such an event. Also, Germany was a tough com-petitor again with a strong team. I saved our two horses until the end of the competi-tion, and that strategy worked.“The German team consisting of Alisa Mül-ler riding Sparklin Cielo, Sofie Eckebrecht riding Guns Red Obsession, Sabrina Baumgärtner riding Top On Cutie and Fa-bienne Kramer riding Little Roosters Gal claimed team silver. The German trainer Kay Wienrich was more than pleased with

what his Juniors had achieved: "They all did a great job. I’m especially glad as we had three young and inexperienced riders in the team. And all four made it to the in-dividual final. "Bronze went to The Netherlands: Framke Algera Famke riding BQ Fancy Starlet, Megan Schmidt riding Great Kid Whiz, Trudy Van der Plas riding Twist N Freck-les and Alissa Leloux riding Little Smart Jameen. „I’m simply happy,“ said their trainer Rieky Young. „We had a rather green team, and they were fantastic!“Alltogether the top 20 of the team compe-tition made it to the individual final (mini-mum score: 199.5). Austria will have four riders there: Marina Bottoli, who high-scored for the Austria team with Jac Little Lena (Score 210), Viktoria Seekircher, Ju-lia Gaupmann and Janine Petschnig. For the Netherlands, Alissa Leloux (third best score 213!) and Megan Schmidt will be in the final, the other finalists being Jorrit Heidbuchel (BEL), Lukasz Czechowicz and Anna Deredowska (both POL), Morgane Cheveux (FRA), Brenda Lesniczakova and Tamara Korseova (both CZE).

Zum zweiten Mal am gleichen Tag ertönte bei der FEI Europameisterschaft Reining in Wiener Neustadt die italienische National-hymne: nach Gold bei den Junioren wur-de Italien Mannschaftseuropameister. Mit insgesamt 662,5 Punkten setzten sie sich gegen Deutschland (Silber mit 656,5 Punk-ten) und Gastgeber Österreich (Bronze mit 652,5 Punkten) durch. Frankreich wurde mit einer 647 Vierte vor Belgien (640) und der Schweiz (632,5).Der Mannschaftswettkampf in der Senior Division war sicherlich einer der span-

nendsten in der Geschichte der EM. Ti-telverteidiger Deutschland, Italien, Öster-reich, Belgien, Frankreich und die Schweiz waren durchweg mit starken Reitern in Pferden vertreten. Für erste große Beifallsstürme sorgte Rieky Young (NED) mit Brady Chex. Die Holländerin, die als Einzelreiterin für ihr Land ritt, startete als Siebte und brachte es mit einem Klasseritt auf eine 219,5, was der sichere Einzug ins Einzelfinale sein sollte. Dann erzielten zwei Reiter unmit-telbar hintereinander Highscore 223: der

Mit die-sem Hengst war Kronsteiner bereits 2009 Vize-Europameister in der Einzelwertung. Beide Reiter glänzten mit einem herausra-genden Durchgang mit großartigen Spins, perfekter Arbeit auf den Zirkeln und gran-diosen Stops.Stefano Angelucci legte für Italien mit AB Captain Badger eine 221 nach, was am Ende der zweitbeste Score bleiben sollte. Zusammen mit Cristian Dallapozzas 218,5 auf Whiz Ruf Peppy ergab das 662,5 Punk-te für Italien und damit Gold. Massimiliano Canu und Hesa Mega Whiz erzielten eine 215,5, die das Streichergebnis für Italien bildete, aber für einen Platz in Einzelfinale bequem reichte. Damit hat Italien alle vier Reiter im Einzelfinale.„Ich wusste, dass wir ein gutes Team ha-ben“, so der italienische Chef d’Equipe Roberto Cuoghi. „aber ich wusste auch, dass zum Beispiel die Deutschen und Ös-terreicher mit sehr guten Pferden da sind. Markus Morawitz und Dun It With Jerry mussten sich mit einer 213,5 zufrieden geben und werden beim Consolation Run nochmal versuchen, ins Finale zu kommen. Dennis Schulz und Smart Rattle Snake (Bes. Dainmasa Hor-ses) hatten Pech beim schnellen Zirkel, wo der Hengst ausrutschte und in Kreuzgalopp fiel. Das bedeutete schließlich einen Score von 215. Und auch Martin Mühlstätter und Dun It On The QT (Bes. Katja Jungfer) konnten nicht ganz ihrem Potential gerecht werden. Es war den beiden anzumerken, dass Mühlstätter den Hengst erst seit ges-tern unter dem Sattel hat. Das Ergebnis: 214,5 und damit Einzelfinale ebenso wie für Dennis Schulz. Chef d’Equipe Helmut Schulz nahm es gelassen: „Wir hätten na-türlich gerne Silber gehabt, aber wir gön-nen Nico Hörmann und Sylvia Rzepka und den anderen des deutschen Teams die Me-daille. Immerhin haben wir drei schon mal sicher im Einzelfinale.“

Germany claimed the silver medal (656,5) with Aus-tria winning bronze (652.5). Everybody is so friendly here, and the facility is great. “Oliver Wehnes and Lil Ruf Bandit (owner Nico Hörmann) scored a 215,5 for Ger-many. Sylvia Rzepka riding Doctor Zip Nic (owner Zip Nic Partnership) and Nico Hörmann riding Smart Spookster (owner Spookster Syndicate) added a 220.5 each after two beautiful rides – the thirdbest score of the European Championship. This meant silver for Germany. Christina Tolks-dorf and Ruf Lil Martha, who replaced Steffen Breug and for whom it was her first senior EC competition, scored a 203,5.Germany’s team trainer Kay Wienrich said:

„What can I say – it was fantastic. Our ri-ders were even better than we had hoped. Oliver has got the horse for only 4 weeks, and it was his first EC. He was great! And Sylvia and Nico did a superb job. As did our youngest Christina.“Austria only missed the silver medal ‚by inches‘. Markus Morawitz and Dun It With Jerry had tob e content with a 213,5 and will try better in the Consolation Run. Dennis Schulz‘ Smart Rattle Snake (owner Dain-masa Horses) slipped during the fast circle and cross fired shortly. This resulted in a score of 215 and Martin Muhlstatter and Dun It On The QT (owner Katja Jungfer) could not live up to their usual form either. It was obvious that Martin has got the horse since yesterday, and both are not yet used to each other. But Martin and Dennis will be in the individual final for sure. Chef d’Equipe Helmut Schulz: „We would have loved to win silver, but the Germans were better and deserved it. We had one great ride, and some bad luck with the others, but I’m glad about the medal all the same. And we still got the individual final.“

Faszination Reining Die ManöverDas Regelbuch kennt elf verschiedene Aufgaben (Patterns) unterschiedlichen Schwierigkeitsgrades. Jede Pattern setzt sich aus sieben bis acht verschiedenen Ma-növern oder Lektionen zusammen. Hierzu zählen der Sliding Stop, bei dem das Pferd aus vollem Galopp zum Stehen kommt und dabei meterweite auf der Hinterhand gleitet, der Spin (rasante 360° Drehungen auf dem inneren Hinterfuß), schnelle und langsame Zirkel mit fliegenden Galopp-wechseln, schnelles Rückwärtsrichten und Rollbacks (180° Drehungen aus dem Sli-ding Stop). Jedes Manöver wird gesondert bewertet. Der Reiter beginnt seine Aufgabe mit einem Guthaben von 70 Punkten. Die Manöver werden in ½-Punkt Schritten von –1 ½ bis + 1 ½ benotet, wobei 0 korrekte Ausführung ohne Schwierigkeitsgrad be-deutet. Dazu gibt es Strafpunkte (Penalties) für Fehler. Die Summe aller Einzelbewer-tungen ergibt den Gesamt-Score.

Das ReiningpferdReining stellt hohe Anforderungen an Kör-per und Psyche des Pferdes. Grundsätz-lich eignet sich jede Pferderasse für diese Sportart, solange sie die körperlichen und psychischen Voraussetzungen mitbringt. Reining Pferde sind meist kleine, kom-pakte und wendige Pferde, die über viel Kraft und Ausdauer sowie ein starkes Ner-vensystem verfügen. Nicht jedes Pferd ist von den Nerven her dem hohen Tempo gewachsen. Im großen Sport sind in der Regel die sogenannten Westernpferderas-sen vorn zu finden, also American Quar-ter Horse, Paint und Appaloosa, was nicht verwundert, da entsprechende Zuchtausle-se betrieben wurde. Hier haben sich ganz spezielle Reining-Blutlinien herauskristal-lisiert. Herausragende Reining-Vererber sind z.B. Hollywood Dun It, Hollywood Jac, Sugar Bars, Colonel Freckles oder Mr Gun Smoke, um nur einige zu nennen.

Die AusrüstungÄhnlich wie im konventionellen Turnier-sport ist auch die Reining einer Kleider-ordnung unterworfen. Vorgeschrieben sind ein langärmliges Hemd mit Kragen, Jeans, Stiefel und ein Westernhut. Hinzu kommen eventuell Chaps und Sporen. Grundsätzlich sollten Reiter und Pferd ein gepflegtes Bild abgeben, bei dem Kleidung und Sattel-decke idealerweise farblich auf das Pferd abgestimmt sind. Das Pferd trägt einen Reiningsattel, der ähnlich wie der Dres-sursattel den Reiter beim richtigen Sitz un-terstützt. 3-und 4-jährige Pferde können in den entsprechenden Prüfungen beidhändig auf Trense (Snaffle Bit) oder gebisslos mit Hackamore (Bosal) vorgestellt werden, äl-tere Pferde müssen einhändig auf Kandare (Bit) geritten werden. Ein weiterer wichti-ger Bestandteil der Ausrüstung ist der Be-schlag, denn nur spezielle „Sliding Plates“, also ganz besondere Eisen an den Hinter-hufen, ermöglich überhaupt das meterlan-ge Gleiten auf der Hinterhand.

Reining –Fascination of Speed and Finesse

any stride, and then melts down in a long, smooth stop while the audience is whistling and shouting with fascination – this is rei-ning, FEI’s youngest discipline.The origins of reining go back to the days of the American cowboy. For his job with the cattle, which was often dangerous, a cowboy needed a horse he could complete-ly depend on. A horse, that fast, agile and could stop and turn on the slightest cue. The horse had to be ridden with one hand only, as the other had to be free for work.

Today reining is one of the fastest growing riding disciplines. The main organization of reining is the National Reining Horse Association in the United States with affi-liates all over the world.

The ManeuvresThere are eleven different patterns in the NRHA rule book, each pattern consisting of seven to eight maneuvres. These include the sliding stop, the spin (360 degree tur-naround), small, slow and big, fast circles, backup and rollbacks (180 degree turns after the stop) . The competitor enters the arena with a 70 score. The maneuvres are judged in ½ point steps from –1 ½ to + 1 ½. 0 means an average performance without much risk. Penalties are given for mistakes, whereas plus is given for speed, but only if combined with smoothness and finesse. All individual results of the maneuvres are added for the total score. A good reining horse should react to the lightest clue from his rider without showing any resistance. It should show total control all the time and generally pleasing to watch.

The reining horseReining demands a lot of a horse – both physically and mentally. Any horse can be used for this discipline as long as their conformation and mind correspond to the demands. Reining horses are fast, powerful and well muscled, especially the hindquar-ters. Also, they have to be both sensitive and cool as well as very cooperative. In high level reining competition, almost all of the reining horses are western horse breeds with a special focus on the American Quar-ter Horse. Today there are various blood-lines specialized on reining like Topsail Whiz, Hollywood Dun It, Hollywood Jac, Sugar Bars, Colonel Freckles or Mr Gun Smoke, only to name a few.

EquipmentThe reininghorse carries a western sadd-le especially designed for this discipline. 3-year-old horses are ridden with both hands on a snaffle or bosal, older horses must shown with one hand only in the bit. In order to perform those long stops, horses wear so called sliding-plates on their hind hooves. In competition, the rider wears jeans and maybe chaps, spurs, a long slee-ved shirt and western hat.
